    I abosuletly agree with you that The Phantom sucks and should have been written better. However, he actually works really well if you look really broughtly at the game. In DD you constantly encounter characters who are putting up a front and won't show you who they really are ontill much later. And I don't just mean metaforicly and figuretively, but also litteraly. With Juniper in case 3, she puts up a facade of an authoritave stern figure, however she later drops this facade and shows her true self, that being a shy kindly person as shown in case 1. With Damien he hides the fact that he is a masked wrestler and at 1 point pretents to be a demon to not get in trouble, but at the end his secret is spilled about him being a wrestler and ends up better for it. And then you have Robin who pretents to be man ends up being exposed for being a woman. I can go on, but let's now talk about the villains. With Ted, he wears a vizer, which covers part of his face, which means that you can't get a good look at his full face. He also wears googles over his eyes and uses a text-to-speech wristcomputer to communicate and rarely uses his real voice to speak with everyone. With L'Belle, he wears a bunch of make-up to hide what he really looks like and during his murderplan he wears a mask to hide his face and to distort his voice in order to trick Jinxi. With Means, he puts up the facade that he is a nice teacher ready at a moments notice if they get in troubble for stuff they didn't do, but is actually highly corrupt and is willing to take bribes to give out perfect scores and will do any thing to keep that a secret. And than you have The Phantom. He is an emontionless man who puts up the facade that he is primming with emotion, but also wears an insane amount of masks and constanly uses voice mimicry to make sure that you don't know what he looks and sounds like. With the nomal characters, they put up fronts because they feel insecure about themselves, but with the villains, they put up fronts, because they have to otherwise they'll be ousted from sociaty. You when you look at the game from this lens, it actually makes why The Phantom is the final boss. He's the perfect foil to Athena - who is upfront, honest and direct, while with him you need to tear down a lot of fronts that he has put up in order get to his core. But yeah, he still should have been written better.

    Wouldn't it fit the theme better if he really was Bobby Fullbright? There’s no reason for the master of disguise to ask for the ladder to go down as Fullbright. There’s also no reason people shouldn't suspect something if the real Fullbright is a corpse.

    • @biglightning88
      @biglightning88 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I genuinely have no idea if that would’ve worked any better or worse. They really were trying to push the theme of “trust other people and you can then face yourself” in the end but it absolutely did not relate to The Phantom at all. It’s not like he had a hardcoded belief that trusting people is bad, they just told him that trusting people is good and then he had a mental breakdown. If he really was Fulbright, maybe that theme of trust could be explored if they changed a lot of things about his story. Maybe he had a partner or something who he didn’t trust because of his emotional insecurities and killed him or something, then he can relate to the theme of trusting others to face yourself. Idk I’m not a writer but it would have to be more than just Fulbright being The Phantom for it to work.

    • @SuperBatSpider
      @SuperBatSpider 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@biglightning88 The theme seemed to me abuse of power, considering who the bad guys of the cases are. A guy meant to dispose of bombs activated one A man meant to support the leadership of his community betrayed them for personal gain A professor used his authority to encourage dirty tactics and killed one who taught people to stick to their principles A man meant to help care for and protect an animal actually tried to end it’s life And then the phantom… pretended to be a guy with authority…

    • @biglightning88
      @biglightning88 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I was more referring to the main theme of the overall conflict. Blackquill and Athena struggle with their past trauma, but need to learn to trust in not only the truth, but in Phoenix to reveal that truth. Only then can they face their past trauma so what really happened can be revealed and they can overcome their trauma. Apollo relates to this too, where he wants to trust Athena, but first needs to question her innocence. He trusts Phoenix to reveal the truth of her innocence despite his defiant stand. They seem to try and relate this theme of trust back to the phantom for some reason. He hasn’t had a history of outright resisting trust, so when the three defense attorneys shout at him that the only way to overcome your fears is to trust others, it has little to no impact. You are right about the abuse of authority though. I wish they attributed this abuse to the dark age of the law better because the two should go hand and hand, but they’re almost never brought up in conjunction. Lord of wasted potential.

    I hate AJ, all cases and the story I find corner the best cause it felt the most consistent and not offensive(4-1 - phoenix is assasinated and spollo is sidelined 4-3 well it makes you lose braincells and everything else and 4-4 the effing disbarrment and phoenix setting up the jurist system which is a plot hole) but they should have continued the story But anyway what I think about the phantom There were no hints that fulbright is a phantom Build up yes hints no And if there is only a build up with no hints≠good twist Yes people will say that Jinxie said that Fulbright was a ghost but that "hint" is very very weak Also there is a scar on his right hand which is also weak but more believable Also he does not feel like a final villain. The real final villain should be his organization but ofc we will probably never know anything about them which is great btw The twist that real fulbright is dead is fine but again OUT OF NOWHERE Makes you think Why we did not get some investigations with real fulbright and then in case 4 he is replaced with phantom. That actually would be impactful if you caught the phantom and there is a opportunity to create more "real" hints about phantom's identity(e.g different behaviour) I felt no satisfaction whatsoever figuring out who phantom was, just pure confusion Fulbright being phantom raise contradictions as well. First of all Athena should be able to tell that fulbright has no emotions Second of all the entire segment with phantom is broken If he can disguise himself seamlessly,why would he not have done so for other characters in game Why does not he fake his emotions when we first use the mood matrix when his report shows that he has no emotions has long since been added to the court record Also his breakdown is running of pure emotions and fear when he is not supposed to any? Like the more you think about the phantom the less sense he makes as a character I could tell that DD team was planning this twist from the start and not planning anything cohesive afterwards And the whole "no one cares for him"(I actually never thought of that) great,another reason for disliking the phantom I dont get why this villain is even considered good by fans

    Hey. I watched the entirety of this video before commenting. I respectfully disagreed with the vast majority of what you had to say, but therr were *two* things I _did_ agree with. I would like to get out *why* that's the case. Be warned that this comment will be a long one, but I ultimately still hold no grudges against you over our differing views on The Phantom. It's just Ace Attorney. We don't need to go off the walls over it. The root of your dislike toward the Phantom from what I gather seems to be his lack of Likes, Dislikes, Backstory, Beliefs, and Motive. To me, his lack of those things IS *the very reason* WHY I love The Phantom, and also is WHY there are many others who love him too. Not every villain needs thoss things. I would know considering that *my* favorite villain in the entirety of Ace Attorney is Excelsius Winner. A villain who is pure evil. He has no tragic backstory, and nearly everything he does is purely because he can. He simply likes tormenting people, and on top of that there isn't a single "redeemable" thing about him whatsoever... and I like that. Of course there's more than this. I could go on and on about my genuine love for Excelsius Winner as a villain, but that should be save for another time. I just needed an example of a character who's missing some of those things that I *still* adore anyway aside from just The Phantom. With regard to The Phantom lacking a motive, you ended up saying exactly what his motive is multiple times in the video. Orders. It's a job for him. That in of itself *is* a motive. Is it the most grand-standing motive of all time or anything of the like? No, and that's a huge part of what Phantom fans like about him. The fact that someone could go as far as he does, and all for no other reason than it being what pays the bills? That's absolutely horrifying, and I must be honest. I like that a lot. And as part of that, which is where we get to another point I disagree with from your video, could've even up to included _mimicking the real Bobby Fulbright_ so perfectly to the point no one on the force even noticed a difference. The Phantom to me, didn't ruin Bobby Fulbright's character at all. The Phantom only made Bobby become more tragic to me. The Phantom makes thinking of Bobby Fulbright *genuinely* tugs at my heartstrings sometimes. *I* cared deeply about his death, both after Edgeworth revealed it, and even at the end of the case. Even if the other characters in universe don't think much about this, why does it have to stop *me* from thinking about it? This next part is a portion I partially *agree* on that you brought up. I'm not disappointed in anyone from the Defense team being happy that the man responsible for totally shredding Athena & to some degree, Apollo, to their cores had finally been taken down. That said, it *would? be nicer if they did, which is why while I don't quite consider The Phantom my "goat." Next up is THE poiny from your video that I agree with the MOST. The lack of getting to explore the people who hired The Phantom to do what he does in the first place. The organization he works for. I'd LOVE to be able to look more deeply into that, however admittedly I think this is something better suited to the plot of an entire game (specifically an Athena Cykes: Ace Attorney game) rather than one singular case alone. It doesn't change the fact that the lack of exploring this is a downside either way. I ultimately still find more things I like about The Phantom as a villain tho than things that I dislike. In fact they're enough to the point that I unironically like The Phantom as a villain more than even villains such as Manfred von Karma (note, this is not a slight against Manfred as I still love him as a villain dearly too). Something else I don't agree with from the video is a tad LESS specific to The Phantom alone. You seemed to imply here that Means was the only villain to really continue the Dark Age of the Law. To me (emphasis on "to me" as I'm expressing how I interpret it all), every single villain in Dual Destinies shows us The Dark Age of the Law in some way, shape, or form. The Phantom included. In fact, I somewhat feel this way about every single villain in all of Ace Attorney. Even outside of Dual Destinies, and as far back as Ace Attorney 1. Why? My reasoning for this will probably feel out of left field. This is because how *I* personally interpreted the Dark Age of the Law when playing these games. How I see it is this. *The entire Ace Attorney franchise was in the Dark Age of the Law.* It didn't _begin_ in Dual Destinies nor Apollo Justice. AJ was simply when characters in universe were _realizing_ it was there, right under their noses *the entire time.* "What's the point of a law system that protects criminals?" I don't think I got the EXACT quote, but a quote very much like this is said by Apollo during Turnabout Serenade when he realizes no matter how much evidence he has against Daryan Crescend, as long as there isn't anything absolutely definitive he still can't bring him down without other means (which is also one of many reasons why I happen to *also* disagree with you on Turnabout Serenade being one of the worst cases in the series, but that's a topic I'll save for another time cause this comment is probably getting long asf lol). I can go into even *more* detail surrounding that, but then I'd be veering off topic and when I think about it more? Perhaps this is something that'd be more suited to a video than a TH-cam comment (unless someone else coincidentally has already made a video about these exact or similar thoughts). TL;DR The Phantom is not my absolute goat, but I do still genuinely love him as a villain. In fact, he's my favorite villain in the entirety of Dual Destinies, and one of my favorites in tbe franchise as a whole. I explained parts of *why* this is the case above. That said, it's completely okay for you or anyone else to disagree with me on this take. I'm not here to butt heads. I'm only here to get out _my_ perspective on the topic.

      metis, the psychologist who write the assessment, was only given some information about him so the fact the report was accurate enough to catch the phantom's interest meant it was dangerous. it was conjecture sure but it isn't like the phantom is gonna swing by the space center he bombed to give her a personal interview to complete the psychological profile. it also helps that the profile was noted to also be *unique* because of the fact the guy was pretty in control of his own emotions that he could suppress them or even make it look like he's feeling some other contradictory emotion.

    • @xxProjectJxx

      @@bazbazbaz. sure, but it's not as if only Metis could have ever developed a profile on him. And stealing it doesn't prevent another profile from being developed in the future. In fact, it just makes it look more accurate. And just because he could control his emotions doesn't mean he's the only person who could, so it isn't even evidence that uniquely points to him. It wasn't the assessment that brought him down as much as it was the stupidity of committing the crime in the interest of retrieving it. Just because it ended up being the final nail in his coffin in Dual Destinies doesn't make it a well written plot point. It's just another example of Dual Destinies being stupid, lol.

      "Sugar Sugar...." Okay ,joke done, but Serenade has without a doubt the most insane premise of all the cases, and that's including Case 2-1 where a guy who broke his neck and died INSTANTLY still somehow wrote his GF's name with his offhand in cursive. So you're telling me that this tiny 4'8 14 year old weighing probably 70 lbs (sorr,y I can't imperial for crap) and is allegedly BLIND not only wrestled a gun from a 300 pound, 6'8 giant bodyguard, said gun was a 45 caliber handcannon of which this tiny 14 year old shot not once but twice (or was it even more?) at the victim. And seeing as it is a 45 caliber gun with a kickback so hard it not only would've broken both his arms upon firing, but the crime scene would've included a Machi-shaped imprint on the goddamn wall. But not a single injury is on the supposed culprit. none whatsoever. And despite that he somehow manages to drag a man 3 times his size after shooting a gun that should'e injured him. And given how the victim was still alive when Apollo found him, you'd think he'd say "Dude with dick hairdo shot me, man". Or how about Lamiroir withholding information because "I can't tell you th emagic trick" bullcrap. And this is just the tip of the iceberg! Don't forget about listening to the same song fifteen-hundred times! I weep for those with bad musical hearing.

      @@DoktorVicTim I can kinda get what they were going for with Serenade. It helps emphasize the dark of the law where evidence is trusted above all else. The evidence pointed to this blind kid somehow killing a massive bodyguard and then dragging his body through a vent, so that is what everyone believes. Does it make ANY sense that this could happen? Not at all, but that's the point. The evidence points to it, so it must be what happened. It fits with the distrust of the law and overreliance on evidence nicely. With that being said, does the case being purposely frustrating and making no sense at all suddenly turn it into a good case? No, it's still easily my least favorite case in the series. The case fitting in well with the overall themes of the game does not make it any less frustrating considering the circumstances you're put in. But I will at least give it credit that the idea is there to make it a notable part of the story.

    I like the phantom, I admit mostly because the moment you're supposed to put together its fulbright really hit me hard because i was practically begging the answer to be literally anyone else, so it was quite a shock. looking back on it, I wish it was foreshadowed, even a little, because Athena shouldve picked up on his lack of emotion the day they met, but she doesnt say anything. the phantom is first brought up DURING the fifth case, i believe (unless its the 4th?) so it just makes the reveal seem unplanned, though I dont really think thats the case. risking spoiling the final villain probably isnt acceptable but ignoring things that should come about *because* of the twist doesnt make sense either.

      There are two interactions that you can only see as foreshadowing in hindsight. Jinxie slaps a charm onto Fulbright and claims he's a ghost, and Blackquill calls him a "Jester in detective's guise." That last one could help explain why Blackquill isn't that shocked by Fulbright being suspected; he already knew, or at least was suspicious... but it's more likely he was just calling him an incompetent clown, and there wasn't anything else to it.

    I never noticed how everyone ignores fulbright's death. I think it wouldve been better if fulbright was real for at least some of it like you were saying, so the characters, or the player, could feel a loss at the hand of this monster. (Metis and Clay are also killed by the phantom but only Athena and Apollo respectively care about them, the player isnt invested in those deaths) I think its pretty rare to have a victim that the player feels strongly about, even someone like misty isnt someone we know on a personal level all that well, so having fulbright gut punch the player with his death wouldve been interesting to see, but no one offers him any mourning at all, weird.

Not only do they just, not resemble any kind of relatable or thought-provoking character at all, they mostly erase the existence of an already known character and pretty much make you feel stupid for ever caring about them. Fulbright is just such a tragic character because he was already written to be very convoluted and intertwined with other pre-existing characters, but then the writers just pulled the godawful “oh, he’s actually been dead for a year” which erases EVERYTHING he’s done for the whole game essentially. If Fulbright died halfway through the game instead of before it, istg Dual Destinies would NOT be as controversial as it is.

    Here we have a street fighter that should never die and have a large number of players. And it's a shame that nowadays I have some difficulty finding someone online to play against. If street fighter 4 had the same audience level as 3rd Striker or higher today it would be very good.

    OK, but who is “that man?” Don’t think the game made it clear 🤔.

      It’s pretty ambiguous but I believe “that man” could refer to the same titular character that Edgeworth references in Ace Attorney Investigations

    During the Tengu section you can call snake and he talks about Pliskin and him being an aliase. Maybe hes a physical version of what the colonel and Rose are. Manifestions to get him through the mission.
