Taking my Tesla Battery to the Scrapyard and Getting Paid - EMidget Part 15
Quick video showing that there's a lot of misinformation out there on the recylability of lithium batteries.
Natural Ventures Recycling in Salt Lake City pays for lithium scrap. All other locations in the city currently charge you to drop off lithium scrap. 12 cents/lb currently, which is more than the 7 cents/lb for lead acid batteries.
Lithium batteries are 100% recyclable, and well on their way to being closed loop, full circle resources just like aluminum and steel.

    ... and a 12v winshield wiper fluid spray motor, feeds into a cleaned out redKoted gas tank, which now hold's my Dr Pepper... so at a push of the old starter button, I get a shot of Dr Pepper up this windshield wiper tube, that terminates near my mouth in my helmet , whenever I get thirsty. For range, I get 100 miles on the battery, but I can go 1,000 miles before I need to top up on Dr Pepper.

    So wait a minute, a space heater draws roughly 15 amps or roughly 1,500 watts... your charger only charges at a rate of 2,200 watts? That's not much more than a space heater... hmmm... I'd cut a hole in the hood and install a plexiglass window so you could see your 3 lights... without lifting the hood. I did something of the sort on my Datsun 280zxt, and also installed a battery cut off switch through a similar hood hole, to kill any vampire electronics drain on the battery. I finally eventually found out what I was trying to eliminate... a driver's side keylock illumination light that never would shut off, that the former owner had disconnected for the same reason, but that I had reconnected because I thought it had just fallen off. 5:18 - OMG I haven't seen a bare MG Keylock since.. 1986! 38 years! That's the puppy I had to saw off with a hacksaw beneath a street lamp by the EL tracks! A lot of the electronic switch on those bloody things will fail on some cars, and then the car won't start, or your turn signals won't work of all things, or your headlights... I've got a Lumina with a flaking out keylock that won't start, and my Zcar loses it's headlights and turn signals... and it's not the fuses or anything else... it's the multiswitch connected to the keylock.

    • @zuccamachine
      @zuccamachine 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I could install a 6.6kW charger, but that is expensive. This is a budget focused build. I'm planning to install a 12V cutoff switch soon, there is a 30W drain to keep the BMS, display, and router powered. Thanks for the tip on the keylock, I haven't put much effort into tracking down the issue with the headlights and turn signals, but I'll check there.

    The more weight you strip off the better. I would have stuck with just the motorcycle cruiser build myself, or a trike, but there's no denying the swezy look of an MG Midget and all that rain protected snout and rear area for batteries. That's crazy you actually spent money for scales... most people would have just used their bathroom scale, or not bothered... there's not much you can do but just slim down regardless. Keep us posted how much this project is costing you in parts and batteries. Those battery purchases half to sting.

    • @zuccamachine
      @zuccamachine 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The scales were borrowed. It was a fun test to quiet all the naysayers claiming EV swaps will add hundreds of pounds and render the car undriveable. This project is on pace to be under $6K when finished, with $2K of that being the car. The batteries were actually quite cheap. $1200 for the batteries and BMS.

    I hotwired and stole a rubber bumpered abandoned MG Midget back in college, and drove it half way across the US with my girl friend for Thanksgiving vacation. Stole the car battery out of a Mustang down the street as the one in the Midget was flat dead. In restrospect I should of just taken the Mustang, but it was still being actively driven, and I have ethics. The MG... not so much so... there were at least 5 parking tickets on the windshield and it was full of leaves from the back window being out. It was a regular Thelma and Louise adventure before Thelma and Louise existed, ending in Kentucky and a bus ride back home. Love those mountains, I'm guessing you're somewhere out in Colorado or thereabouts. I've always looked into buying another, to the point of looking at one for sale and sitting in it again, only to find I no longer fit... Once while driving on a dirt road through the swampy areas of Georgia, I told her to hold the steering wheel and while the car was in 2nd gear, I climbed out over the front windshield, held on to the 3 windshield wipers, while she yelled at me to get back in the car LOL. I was just that much in tune with the car by that point.

      Back then I had no idea where reverse was at first when I tore out out on that journey, so I think I ended up avoiding reverse, or just pushing the car... backwards? It was so light to do... I had forgotten all about that. I'm sure I figured it out eventually, but still... most of the work involved was cutting off the steering keylock which took all night long and several trips across town to fetch tools. The original owner got the car back, in a fixed and running condition. Next Christmas I took a flight home instead as my folks gave me airline tickets.

      @choppergirl 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@zuccamachine Nice. If you can get the range up to 30-50 miles, it would make a great grocery fetcher, but you don't even need that far since you live in town. I use a Honda Shadow Spirit cruiser motorcycle with pickup truck bed and duffle bag on the back just for that purpose. 95% percent of my vehicle trips are to a grocery store 15 miles away, and I imagine for most Americans who no longer work, it's the same. I hope you can find an affordable brushless motor for it. If it was custom built from the ground up you could have a hub motor on each rear wheel (or all wheels), and it'd eliminate a lot of the weight of the transaxle. Building ultralight aircraft, I started to pick up the mentality of... building light... for things you have to move around. Otherwise, I overbuild everything (buildings) so they will last 100% neglected until the end of time (wishful thinking). They use a lot of Aluminum, aluminum tubing, rivets, aircraft grade steel bolts, and plexiglass (instead of glass) in ultralight aircraft, so keep that on the brain when swapping out parts or adding new ones to your EV vehicles. More expensive but lighter weight than steel.

If you use different gears in the transmission the input/output will be different and you can isolate if it's on the motor side or axle/propshaft side. Just drive at the same speed - 3mph say, in 3rd and 4th. If it makes the exact same clicking sound it's on the output side of the transmission. If it's a faster click then it's on the motor side. I put all 332 LifePO4 cells in the trunk, added airbags. Very hard to adjust the air precisely (between 10 and 20 psi) to hold the weight and soften the bumps. One leaked so I pulled them, had the lever shocks (1961 Sunbeam Alpine) rebuilt by Apple Hydraulics, added tube shock absorbers, and raised the body height by lowering the leaf springs with brackets at the rear. The car rides higher and no longer bottoms with 200lbs of batteries, but still too stiff due to the leaf springs. Now I am suspending the battery boxes with shock absorbers made for washing machines. So far so good. Can't get rid of the leaf springs and use coil over tube shocks, which would provide a softer ride, because the leaf springs hold the rear axle perpendicular to the line of travel.

  • @rickm7209
    @rickm7209 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Yeah, Li or LIfePo4 cells want to be stored around 30 % SOC. They will degrade pretty quickly otherwise. I bought 32 @ 3.2v cells from Docan and they sat for 2 years as I swapped in a Netgain Hyper 9 into my Sunbeam Alpine, and the cells remained amazingly very close to the 30% as when they arrived. Congrats on the wedding plans.

    Hi, I relly admire the work!! Im wondering how did you do the regen braking, does the motor come with it presetup?

      The controller supports regen braking. It is on/off only and not variable. You can either use a momentary button to control the regen, or use an option in the controller app that full regen applies when the throttle is released. This is similar to single pedal EV driving.

    Nice build, neatly done. Thanks for sharing!

    I'm liking the conversion! Though a few thoughts if I may. Why a 3KW vs a 5KW? Was it cost or was range more the priority over speed? I like the addition of the charger, you see that on several factory built cycles but not so many conversions. Have you thought about moving it into the what was once the fuel tank? That way it would be protected from the elements and it opens the possibility of using the gas cap area as the location for the power cable. Anyway this is a fantastic project, and you've done a great job!

      @ebikeengineer The goal was to keep it under $2K. A 5kW motor was certainly possible, but the next size up motor, controller, and BMS would have bumped the build cost up by ~$500. Performance would have certainly been better. The nice part is all these next size up components can drop right in with no mounting modifications if that's ever desired. The cross section of the fuel tank is a horseshoe shape, so unfortunately the charger won't fit. Not much would fit in there honestly. Maybe the DCDC converter and some wiring. But there's already ample space for it underneath.

      I should have watched longer - as you later answered my question on the 3 vs 5 KW motor. ;-)

      @@zuccamachine You make great use of the existing space, I was just thinking weatherproofing. Yeah a U shaped tank would mean you'd have to disassemble the charger to get it to fit. But you got me thinking how I could install my charger on my Goat instead of carrying in my pack.

    Thank you for posting this information. I have been interested in electric vehicles since the mid 1990s and even considered getting a Sebring Citicar. My primary car now is a 2014 Chevy Volt, but I have a '76 Midget (ICE) in the garage. I have thought multiple times about converting the Midget to electric, so I will be following your story.
