Cardinal Siri was not taken seriously in the Vatican for as long as he was around. He was a bombastic, nasty, vulgar man who believed that being a right wing zealot was sufficient for him to be elected pope. I came to know him well while he was Archbishop of Genoa. Why bring him up now? He received very few votes during the conclaves he participated. He adored lots of silk, extravagant amounts of lace, gold everywhere, thrones, firestorms of incense and candles. Who believed him with his obsessive right wing slant on everything and that revoltingly effeminate way of delivering every sermon? Thank God he became more of a joke as time wore on and finally died. He was never even far away from becoming pope.
