Norbert Smith: A Life - Con O'Neill
Extract from Harry Enfield's 1989 spoof of the history of British cinema featuring Con O'Neill.
Told through a fictionalised version of ITV's long-running arts programme The South Bank Show profiling fictitious British actor Norbert Smith, this one-off show looks at the highs and lows (mostly the lows) of the British film industry. This clip satirises the films made for the emerging teenage market in the late 1950s onwards as rock and roll became popular.

Victoria was a bit dishonest at the start, saying she had no qualifications and was lucky to get into university. It transpired that amongst other things, she had a grade A for English A Level.
I'm pleased to have seen this show, despite the unfortunately awful sound, so thank you to Niki for uploading it. Vic is someone I always felt I would have loved to meet, with the fanciful idea that we could have been good friends. I imagine many people felt like that about her. She is an inspiration due to the high quality and sheer volume of what she managed to create in her life. As an appallingly procrastinating writer myself, I am in awe of the discipline and drive she showed, and not a little envious, too. RIP Vic - my word, you earned it.
Dreadful sound..... crackling. Not watching
Persevere - it's worth it.
I loved housewife 49 v wood was so good in it
Miss her
Why mention her gender?
Fairly obvious? Because she was a pioneer. She was the first female comedian who really had widespread success in the UK in what had previously been a massively male profession.
Ah Victoria we will meet up in the heavens and have a cup of tea and a natter xxxxx
Well, let us know if you do! She was famously antisocial off stage.
What a lovely person. Victoria, not Mervvyn!!!!😂😂😂😂😂
She certainly had a darker side. I really recommend her authorised biography, "Let's Do It"
We will never see her like again, she was unforgettable and magnificent. Her lines live on.
Possible the most talented female comedy writer ever!
Why mention her gender?

Victoria's authorised biography "Let's do it" reveals a somewhat antagonistic relationship she had with both Melvyn Bragg and the Southbank Show. In an earlier meeting she had with Bragg years before when they were both judging a talent contest, she found him "unnecessarily rude.' Her first appearance on the Southbank Show in 1996 was problematic. The original producer showed up late at her house and she asked for him to be removed. The replacement producer found her "frosty". There was a part that had to be edited out when they filmed Victoria with two fans approaching her for an autograph and she was quite rude about them before they got to her. She was also somewhat startled when Bragg asked her if Pat & Margaret represented the two sides of her personality. He asked her the same question in this episode and she was very unhappy about it. She felt he wasn't taking it seriously and just recycling old stuff. Victoria also later met a number of people who had known Nella Last and found out that the way she had portrayed her was quite wrong. Nella was remembered as actually having made her husband's life quite unpleasant and certain things that she had written about in the diary never actually happened.
Thank you so much for this. It's a joy to watch Robbie Coltrane filled with the spirit of Dario Fo. They are beautiful in their storytelling
Niki Thank you so much for posting this. I have wanted to watch it for so long. He was such a great loss to the arts. Gosh he is political here
Thank you Richard, hope you enjoy the other three episodes too (apologies for running out of videotape right at the end of Ep2). I think this series shows just how multitalented he was, each episode has elements of standup, drama, comedy acting, & satire. Hoping they'll get a proper rebroadcast when the TV channels get their tribute shows lined up.
