Adventures building and living in a yurt, on the coast of Maine. Well, that is how this all started. Now we are clearing land and starting to build a home. We are also going on adventures, exploring the great state of Maine, which is still pretty new to us. If we can pursue the life we want for ourselves and our family, so can you!

Building an A-frame alone is tough enough, but when winter brings freezing temperatures, snow, and icy conditions, it becomes a whole new challenge. For everyone who tries to reinvent the process there is a reason why we do things the way we do. Efficiency is important. He who plans ahead succeeds. Tarps, 3 point connection and some come alongs ;)

Thanks! Hoping to get back out for some walks and hikes once we get a roof on. We are probably 1.5-2 hours from Buckfield.

Any advise on sound proofing a yurt for rain sound. I love my yurt but the rain is so loud It is deafening. I’m in BC and we get a lot of rain. I‘m thinking of MLV or rock wool.
We haven’t attempted anything to reduce the noise, but I imagine any sort of insulation added to the roof would help rain not sound so loud.
Hello from just across the border in New Brunswick. We are thinking of going off grid with a yurt. How do you make out in those hurricane force winds?force winds
Thanks for your question! We've experienced wind gusts up to 75 mph in our yurt. During those strong winds, the canvas walls and roof pulsate with the gusts, but everything holds up fine. Our yurt has the snow/wind package from Pacific Yurts, which includes two steel cables woven through the roof rafters and 2x4 supports at the ends of each rafter. Some people also add blocking between roof rafters for extra stability. I've never worried about the yurt holding up; my biggest concern is the big trees nearby. Overall, our yurt has proven to be quite resilient in high winds!

No, hand splitting requires a welding helmet
We have a tin roof to amplify the sound of the rain and it does get loud it rains a lot here
It would put me to sleep so fast!!

We just survived an Epic Ice storm in our Yurt. We are in Oregon and the trees were falling all around but luckily none hit the Yurt. It was scary!
Glad to hear you were all OK! If we ever move the yurt again we are definitely clearing away any trees that could potentially hit it.
Could you please do this without the obnoxious music! You lost my interest within seconds with the music. If you are gonna use music, use it when you are not narrating and don't make it so loud!

Definitely need a second location for showering due to moister. A little buddy heater for shower would work. I don't know how you control the heater if you are inside and its out side. I would love to hear what you are doing these days. I'm thinking about using the foam plywood and makeshift a shower room. That and or using a shower tent surrounded by the foam wall's.

I think any part of a home can be nice sometimes, and annoying at other times. Mostly, we love the sound of rain on the roof. But, it was definitely surprising the first time we had a big down pour and realized how loud it was. Hope you’re having a great day!
Where in Maine are you? Me and my wife we are in our mid and late 20s we recently bought 40 acres up in Maine and we are soon to transition to live off grid in a yurt! I wish you the best blessing and hopefully you get to see my set up as well!

No plumbing. We have a composting toilet and water jugs with a battery powered pump
What brand of yurt do you have and do you have issues with condensation in the winter/spring? I live in north Idaho where the winters are similar to yours. Our spring is very wet and sometimes mildew builds up if things are under tarps. I'm trying to decide between a yurt that is mostly "plastic" or a traditional yurt made of natural breathable materials.
We have a Pacific Yurt (which we got used and I think is close to 20 years old). We do get some condensation/mildew issues but nothing that we can’t clean/take care of. A new Pacific Yurt probably would experience the same issues.
Do you have condensation issues? And if you don't, how do you achieve this? I also live in a yurt but I'm having this issue. And I am trying to sort how to deal with it.
We have had some minor condensation issues, but in general, when we run our wood stove and kerosene heater it dries everything out.

@@AllPathsLeadToWater no offense intended. I like the videos because I am trying to decide if I want a yurt in Maine for a full time home, and there is not a lot of good information out there for living in a colder climate not necessarily off grid.
