    Is Murder Before Christmas the one with the pregnant woman? Ouch! The tides... ugh. That will be a problem for me, too. I also liked that the letters in Yours Truly, Thomas created a sort of mystery. Yeah, romance is romance and I rolled my eyes at some of that. But I usually do. TLBW... did you question whether the other world even existed at any point? The author did a fabulous job of showing the depressed person's inability to see anything but her own pain. Because I wanted to shake Evelyn and point out how incredibly SELFISH she was about wanting her way etc. BUT... It's real. She did a GREAT job showing it. But though I didn't say anything in my review because I did really love seeing the reality of it, I HATED what it did to people. Her depression destroyed so many people. Tom was messed up (possibly for life) because of it. Phillipa was put through FAR too much in this book. She was a mom as a young teen! SHEESH. And poor Jamie! UGH. Oh, and she did a fabulous job showing why people hurting like this are attracted to self-harm. UGH. I am loving Thorofare. Didn't get to read tonight. Sigh. From Sally's book, it made me think of Edward Rowland Sill's The Fool's Prayer and this verse: The ill-timed truth we might have kept- Who knows how sharp it pierced and stung? The word we had not sense to say- Who knows how grandly it had rung? Still praying for your foot! Hmmm... I think that you should definitely count rereads if you haven't physically read that copy. I think that's only reasonable.

    • @AshleasBookshelf
      @AshleasBookshelf วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, The Murder Before Christmas had the pregnant lady in it. She was accused of murdering her husband. TLBW--I never thought it was a different world. Phillipa's reaction seemed too strong for a made up world. Yeah...depression is a destructive monster. I didn't think the way the author took things was appropriate for a young adult book. If a teen reads this and is struggling with depression, I don't think it's healthy to give the message of clinging to fantasy worlds instead of coping with the real one. I'll wait for you to catch up on Thorofare before picking it up again. I just finished chapter 50 yesterday. Thank you for your prayers!

    I don't think I realized The End of the Spear was a book. I knew it was a movie. I haven't settled entirely on what I want to read next. I am hoping to listen to Anne of Avonlea and Sense and Sensibility, I think. I have one to finish - Evelina - from this month. I also have a couple from the library to read. I'm just about finished the non-fiction I'm reading - For Mind and Heart, St Nektarios as Teacher, but I'm not sure where I'm going after that. Happy reading!

    I'm with you on continuing the journal. I started a new one this year even though the old one wasn't finished but mostly because I wanted to swap out and try new stuff and style and knew it would bother me to have it all mixed up. But that's me being weird. I remember a friend who used to draw black and white things in her planner for everything. Very black and white but the way she did it really made it look sharp and special, so black pen, white page, and practicing a bit of doodling, and you could have a stunning journal without any need for anything else if you really wanted to. So I'm with yo on the "don't need a bunch of stuff." Do I have a bunch of stuff? Yep. But... not needed.

    I stopped reading Charles Dickens Christmas short stories when I felt at risk my memory would blur them together. That's fine, more for next year. I loved the Father Christmas book! I read Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson and thought it was pretty good. I've read all 4 of the "One and Only" books. They all have underlying "causes/agendas", but discussing with my 12 yr old, we agreed Bob's story was the best, though predictable. I listened to a nonfiction then fly in the mood to get back to some classics and picked up a Thomas Hardy. I haven't felt all that Christmassy this year. "Snow" is a Snow White retelling with some steampunk and scientific experiment elements. I'm not sure how much more I can say without giving spoilers. It's also only 260 pages, so not a big time waster if you end up not liking it.

    That is a good mix! I have 10 of Charles Dickens books to read his novels to 0. I'm hoping to read 1 a month. I will be buddy reading The Idiot by Dostoevsky and Les Miserables by Victor Hugo in January and February. The last 8 years I read history and nonfiction. Now I'm going through a classics phase. My 12 yo is a very advanced reader but there are few challenging books appropriate for a 12 yo. Some classics are good options, but my husband or I need to read them first.

      @Fernie4243 that's an impressive list of classics! My 8 year old is a voracious reader. It has been difficult to keep ahead of him and find good books on audiobook for my 10 year old.

    • @Fernie4243
      @Fernie4243 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @AshleasBookshelf voracious, yes. We understand. Over dinner yesterday she said she had a reading goal of 650 books for 2025. Her father and I almost choked on our food, though why we were so surprised I don't know. She checks out at least 15 books from the library a week and she reads them all at least once. We certainly don't read that fast and struggle to research authors and reviews to keep up. We told her for every 10 fiction she would have to include 2 non-fiction or approved classics. I don't think that will slow her down much; she reads really fast and knows what she's read. Plus she has this freaky, possibly photographic, memory. We have a lot of retired teacher friends and homeschool friends but she's read all their book suggestions. It's a struggle.

    Poison looks GOOD! The Morley book sounds a bit like Eight Cousins. I HATE that they gave you that total spoiler. For Whom the Sun Sings is GREAT but that tagline is awful. STill infuriates me. I finally "got" why the dementors go after Harry. I mean... Horcrux. Duh! Can you imagine me in Denny's while people are eating around me, and this guy droning on and on about animal bladders? *shudders Not a huge fan of Mrs. Jeffries. I felt like it was so manipulative. And the "poor idiot" man attitude. Sigh. Can I just say I STILL wanna slap Ava. I think The Lion Killer is one of my least favorite of the series, but I do like it. I really need to read the Secrets of Oramdale series. The Lines Between Us isn't my favorite of hers. It's not BAD... just not as great as Things We Didn't Say.
