Bugler's Holiday played on a John Smith Topsy 3 Street Organ
มุมมอง 8374 ปีที่แล้ว
This is Bugler's Holiday by Leroy Anderson played on my home made street organ. The organ is based on John Smith's plans for his Topsy 3. It is MIDI controlled, using a Raspberry Pi as the MIDI sequencer. It currently has 78 pipes although I hope eventually to add the melody octave rank which will bring it up to the round 100.

A Christmas duet played on my home made street organ and another built by Terry Pankhurst. This was recorded at the St Albans Organ Theatre Christmas Concert on 9 December 2012. Both organs are based on designs by John Smith who also made the video recording.

Another tune on my home made organ. I chose this piece as it makes good use of the glockenspiel. Listen for the glissando effect in the chorus.

Here is another update on my home built street organ. This tune makes good use of the wood blocks to simulate the castanets. Although I have now added the glockenspiel, this tune does make much use of it.
Can Can

My home made street organ playing the Can Can. I have just added the percussion instruments (wood block, triangle and drum) and this is an early test, playing and arrangement of the Can Can by Melvyn Wright.

My street organ now has 78 out of 100 pipes fitted and working. It is playing Bugler's Holiday arranged by John Smith who also designed the organ on which mine is based.
Part-built Topsy 3 Organ again

My home made Topsy 3 organ playing "The Bridges of Paris". At this stage, only the melody and accompaniment pipes are fitted, about half the final number.
My Topsy

Topsy 3 is a MIDI controlled busker organ designed by John Smith. I am building my own organ based on his plans. When finished, it should have 100 pipes, a glockenspiel and percussion. So far I just have 12 pipes working that form the accompaniment section. In this video I have transposed the music down one octave so that the melody is mostly within the range of the available pipes. The tune is...

Nice but I think your motor needs a bigger pulley as the "cranker" is jerky.
I think that the jerkiness is mainly caused by the motor switching between three different speed settings as the reservoir fills and empties. I have probably adjusted the speed setting since then so the changes are less abrupt. Also, the belt was a bit slack so it tended to slip as the bellows reached the ends of their travel. The original design uses a two stage pulley system and uses a larger motor pulley as you suggest. I decided to try using a single belt system with a smaller motor pulley to give a similar reduction ratio. I do not use the motor when performing in public as people seem to prefer to see me winding the handle. Now I only use the motor when I am tuning the pipes as I cannot easily wind the handle and make adjustments at the same time.
Would be great to get this music to my John Smith 20 note organ!! Love it and the movie!
Hi David! Mine is now playing :) John Smith busker variation
Thanks David and Terry, I enjoyed that video very much.
That played very well David, and a real fun piece.
Well done Guys
Hi David, firstly let me say well done. The organ sounds great. You have done a really good job, i just hope that mine is half as good ! Secondly, there are keyframe systems out there that can read book music and control the solenoids. This way making a hybrid MIDI organ that can use electric music and cardboard book music. (or paper roll if you prefer) I believe Alan Pell uses a system like this for some customers. But there will be others. At a guess, it would be an optical system.
This organ was built from John Smith's design for Topsy 3 and is only designed for MIDI control. The pallet valves are all operated by solenoids, controlled from a MIDI decoder. I chose to build this specifically because I felt that MIDI would make it easier to arrange my own music in future. I suppose it might be possible to build a keyframe system to control the solenoids but it would create a rather strange hybrid!
The motor was taken from an old lawn mower. It originally ran on 24v but works well on 12v. The reason that it may seem out of tempo is that it runs at three speeds, depending on how full the reservoir is. The speed of the motor is not related to the tempo of the music as the tempo is from the MIDI system.
Hello David, just subscribed having linked through from the Busker forum. topsy sounds great. I love Melvyn's arrangement! Congratulations and good luck for Lifeboat Rallye. regards - Peter
I am working to increase my repertoire with my own arrangements and adaptations of available MIDI files. I shall probably buy in a few tunes too as I am playing at an event in a couple of weeks.
I agree that it could do with some more visual interest although the drum helps in this respect. I have experimented with some tell-tales. However, I plan to add the glockenspiel soon and this may solve the problem since the strikers will move on every melody note, even when the glockenspiel is turned off.
Serious progress from the last video. You could do with some little tell-tales on the pipes. Can you get it to play the Donkey Kong theme or Manic Miner? (olibye)
Nicely made, I finished mine before xmas but had a real task to get the bass right. Eventually discovered that I wasnt using thick enough wood so they wouldnt resonate properly. I also adjusted the dimensions slightly which proved a right sod for fitting everything in. However it makes a good sound now and some of Alan Pell tunes are very good. If anyone knows anywhere else that can supply 65 note midi files I would be very grateful, I am having a bit of a task finding some other suppliers.
@LincolnshireRose The squeak is actually from the handle on the cranking wheel. I finally found time to dismantle it and lubricate it and it is silent now. Surprisingly, it also makes it much pleasanter to turn. I have made the bass pipes now and hope to fit them soon which should make a big difference to the sound. Where have you accommodated your extra countermelody pipes in the MIDI range?
Hello David, Its starting to come together. I can hear a squeak and i guess its the crank bearings but thats a minor problem. I cant wait to hear it play with all the pipes. I am building a Topsy 3 myself but being a little crazy i have added two extra Counter melody pipes!!! Should be fun.......... All the best.
