    I’m wondering the same thing I really don’t want to pay $20 a paycheck for a Union that doesn’t do Jack and is technically broke they say. They’re paying off a lawyer they used to fight for an employee and apparently they owe him thousands and only pay 100 a month towards it. I doubt they’re gonna go to bat for me so why am I paying!? It is a small local organizations for a youth residential treatment facility. They barely negotiated a small pay raise of like basically $.50 an hour this year that doesn’t even cover the union dues that come out of my check every week it is freaking garbage. I think they are pushing that money to Democratic politicians and that’s all there is to it. They only negotiated for a 50 Cent an hour raise this year and that does not even cover the union dues. I think that the dues honestly just go toward Democratic politicians in the long run. Additionally, it’s a very small organization how in the world is the executive Director making $200,000 and the two people under him are easily making about $120,000 I really can’t believe it. Meanwhile, they only pay their people about $15 an hour for a highly stressful work environment. That is actually dangerous with very violent youth that actually attack staff.

    Unions are neither inherently good nor inherently bad. But I have a part-time job in a largely ununionised workplace. And the stuff that management get away with is amazing. They don't try it on with me too much for at least two reasons. One is I know my rights and will politely draw the line if unreasonable demands are made and they know I would probably escalate complaints if they insisted. The second is that I am one of their best and hardest workers and they need me as much I need them. But if ever they decided to try to get rid of me unfairly, I am a union member and would have help in disciplinary meetings. But, alone, I cannot protect everyone else and not everyone has my level of confidence and education, though I would happily,a nd more usefully, be able to support others within an organisation such as a union. Obviously any organisation, including a union, can become corrupt and that is why it is essential that unions have a strong base that makes demands on the union structure so that the union organisation serves to support local branches as they negotiate with employers, which is what it is there for. If everyone just joins a union and expects it to solve all their problems, then of course it won't achieve much, or serve much purpose.

      I have sat through a colleague's disciplinary in which he got sacked. Had he had a union rep to actually ask questions and not just act as a witness, he would have left that meeting with the managers under investigation. Unfortunately, he wasn't a union member.

    • @johnbull5394
      @johnbull5394 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Dr. Kenneth Noisewater No, that's true. No one NEEDS a union. But I wouldn't begrudge people the right to have one. Unions can do a lot of good, particularly for those who lack the confidence or knowledge to stop themselves getting ripped off.

      Exploitation of labour is theft. The source of all profits comes from the exploitation of labour, which is to say, the differential between what a worker produces in his/her day of labour, and what he/she is paid in wages.

    Liberal and Labour don't care about the environment, jobs, or just giving all Australians a fair go. Young people worried about the future most definitely won't be voting for them when the keep hacking at our Universities and ruining our environment, eg expanding CSG extraction -- which is making life unlivable for people unfortunate enough to be living near the sites. But I suppose, they'd prefer to have dumb animals rather than an educated populous making informed decisions...
