I’m from both the 80s and 90s. Growing up I was introduced to video gaming through my cousins NES. Mainly because of Super Mario Bros 3 in which the hype for that game made Cyberpunk 2077 look like a modest interest back then. Our first console we had was a SNES even though I salivated over the mighty 16bit Sega Genesis. Things were far simpler back then. Not like today where companies always find was to nickel and dime us with loot boxes, paid dlc, and other insidious practices.

Regarding Wireless controllers: They do have Wireless controllers for the Atari 2600. Regarding buttons: Have you seen how many buttons the Atari 5200, Intelvision, Colecovision controllers have? Not to mention Atari Jaguar. *Edit* Atari 5200 controller: About 19 buttons. PS5 controller: About 16 buttons.

Great blast from the past. I had the parachute MC Hammer pants in the late 80s, then in the late 90s as a Raver kid was wearing bell bottoms. I still favor Adidas as a tribute to those Great times.

Sega Master System and Genesis were my first consoles. I'd played Pong on my friend's Magnavox system in the early 70s, but my parents wouldn't let me have a video game system, so they were my first consoles, which i bought when I was an adult and had moved out.

I remember us having a PC-50X in the early 80s but I only vaguely remember it at around 3-4 years old and none of the adults really played, I think. My first real console was the Family Computer in 1988, then Gameboy (1990), Sega Mega Drive (1991), Game Gear (1992?), SNES (1993), Sanyo 3DO (1995), PS1 (1995/6), N64 (1996), Saturn (1997?), PS2 (2000), Xbox 360 (2009). I haven't bought a console since, but I've looked at the current gen consoles a few times in recent years.

My first gaming console was the Atari 7800. I loved the backwards compatibility with the 2600 games. I had a pretty good library of games. Eventually i got the NES in '89. We GenX-ers have been fortunate to have witnessed the growth of video games to what they have become nowadays.

I was born in 1985, and I remember the first console I ever had was the Atari 2600 somewhere around 1989-1990. I had it for about 6 months - 1 year before I swapped it for the Sega Master System. I then got the SNES for Christmas the year it launched in the UK in 1992 and a Sega Mega Drive the following year for my 8th birthday. I used to go to my grans every Sunday for dinner, and she had an NES in the bedroom, which I would always play when I was there. I remember she had Shadow Warriors (Ninja Gaiden), Megaman II, Super Mario Bros./Duckhunt, Super Spike V'Ball, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I have had close to every console released at some point in time, but sadly, I had to partways with them.

Always thought that was funny considering what we know how of it's importance to the future of this hobby.

If the C64GS did had a keyboard input, and if it came up with a keyboard included, it could,ve been saved from it’s grace, looks at the atari XEGS, (a consolized atari 800), it did had a keyboard input and came with an external keyboard included and it was a huge success, if the atari XEGS didn’t had a keyboard input, then it might,ve flopped hard as well.

The Sega Master System had a much smaller market share in North America compared to the Nintendo Entertainment System, to be sure, but I suspect it wasn't quite as lopsided a victory for the NES in Canada compared to the United States because, where I was (outskirts of Montreal), most video stores had a decent selection of Master System games to rent and I don't think it was just my family renting the games. The main reason most stores in my area stopped carrying Sega Master System games by late 1990 was probably because the Genesis had already been out around a year and many of us Master System families had already upgraded. The Sega Master System was my family's first dedicated console but the first device we had that connected to a television and played games mainly off cartridge (and also audiocassette) was actually a Commodore Vic-20.

    • @GenXFlashback

Thanks for the insight on the Sega Master System. I only played one at a friend’s house. The Vic 20 and the old audiocassette data storage is definitely a blast from the past! I had a 16k TRS-80 with that type of storage. Good times! Thanks for watching.

That's what I never understood about the 5200. Why didn"t Atari just release a low cost version of the Atari 400 as a game console, instead of making the 5200? Commodore should have done the same with the VIC-20 and release it as a game console and include 2 built-in joystick ports.

Nice video. Coleco didn't die because of the crash. Coleco died from their own self-inflicted wound of promising a super system add on to make the Coleco a Super Coleco, and delivered instead the Adam Computer, which is arguably the worst of the old early 80s computers. Also one fact you don't notice nowadays. When was the last time you saw a right-handed controller for a console? Other than Beeshu who made joysticks for other consoles, the 7800 and a lot of the old pre-crash systems were the last ones to have ambidextrous controllers. This Lefty situation was so bad, I unintentionally made a point when I bought a right-handed fight stick for the Sega Genesis and went undefeated against my friends, one of whom was the local Blockbuster champion and later became a national Xbox champion. He said there was no way a right-handed joystick could beat him yet are four common friends played a prison match where loser stays in prison and he never left prison against the others who borrowed my right hand fight stick. And it wasn't just a fight stick it wasn't everything stick. I know you can only talk about so much but have you heard of the Bally Astrocade? If the then price was adjusted for inflation of the 2600 turns out to be $1,050, then the astrocade would be $1,600 of today's money, even beating out the Neo Geo Home and the 3DO as the most expensive console relative to the economy at the time ever. However in the 90s, I found three Bally Astrocades at three different thrift stores at three different times with a bunch of games and extra controllers for 5 bucks a piece. When my friends heard I was both collecting games and flipping ones I have doubles of, a couple of my other friends that saw me do it become retro game collectors too in addition to the then modern stuff. I assume you are personally Gen X. Your voice doesn't sound significantly younger or older than mine. If you're not from Gen X, then you're hiding your youth / age well. It's okay that other people take interest in what Gen X did with video games.

I'm Gen X, and I started gaming with the Nes and Master System in 1986. I was a casual player until I got my Sega Genesis in 1989, and I still play today. I play everything across all platforms, genres, and generations of gaming. I will be a gamer until the day I die. Addendum - The video game crash of 1983 was not a worldwide event. Yes, it was felt throughout the world (despite what people from the UK or Europe tell you), but it did not directly effect them like it did us. They were all gaming on microcomputers when we in the US were all feeling the "Atari Shock." Their platforms continued to sell incredibly well all while most Americans walked away from gaming. They did not have to deal with the social stigma many of us here in the states had to fight. Like "only lones play video games" or "gaming isn't for females."
