Lush December calf grazing: Life on the farm with Grassy Organic Farmer
Time flies! This shorter video of tending the calves in December was in line for a while and just couldn't seem to make it priority to post...
This was early December moving of our calf herd that was weaned from the nannies about a month before taking this video. They really did look prosperous and when weighing them on the truck in early January they broke all previous weight records by 20 lbs! Enjoy!
Semi-regular updates from GrassyOrganicFarmer on his life and work on our 220+ cow 100% grass-fed and organic dairy farm. We focus on honoring the Creator of this beautiful earth by building soil carbon utilizing good grass management with dairy cattle and perennials. Having fun and providing a safe and healthy environment for our 9 children while doing the above is also paramount. Thanks for watching and we hope this channel is an avenue of hope, education, and inspiration for you!

      Basically tumblewheels don't work where there is trees. In situations where I have a tree I want to work around I have to dismantle part of the fence when the cows are out of the paddock (we are a dairy so out for milking or a different overnight paddock) and reassemble on the other side of the tree. If moving around a single tree with cattle in paddock yes, you'd need to have a 2nd line setup to move the wheels over to.

      As we have nanny cows come available. We just finished training the first round of 4 cows with calf sets and put a 2nd group into the training pens yesterday. So about 20 calves already bonded or bonding and another 20 still running with the herd and a 3rd 20 (approx) expected to be born the next few weeks.

      @DwightStoltzfoos 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no barn these cattle can utilize on the current farm. Our dry cows and heifers have often out wintered during a harsh winter without any shelter other than tree lines for wind breaks. We don't very often get colder than 10F and even if we do if they are cold weather does not hurt them if they are dry. They just eat more feed to stay warm. Even if they are on the home farm we do not provide barn protection except during the rare hard hitting winter storm.

    • @grassyorganicfarmer8755
      @grassyorganicfarmer8755 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The owners clear cut logged this property and asked us to finish clearing it and seed it down/graze it in exchange for a 13 year no-rent lease. It's a very rocky ridge and is only good for rough pasture/grazing with cattle. If we get rain it has done very well. Tends to slow down quickly if we get dry.
