Genetic Literacy Initiative by TIGS
.A Genetic Literacy Initiative
We surveyed people from different walks of life to understand their thoughts on genetics and what they think about the technology of tweaking genes.
This project is part of the genetic literacy initiative developed by our team at the Tata Institute of Genetics and Society.
Genetic literacy is the knowledge and understanding of genetics. Adequate knowledge will help people to make informed choices.
Here we asked our participants questions such as, “From whom do they think they got more DNA from, who do they look like in their family, what do they think about people marrying within their family and what superpower would they want if they could edit a gene”. Thus we collected our answers and with the help of experts we presented the scientific information related to each question. We have also curated the ethical dimension of genetics.
We would like to acknowledge Dr. Rakesh Mishra for his support throughout the project.
The video was conceptualized and supervised by Dr. Saveetha Meganathan at the Tata Institute for Genetics and Society, and Dr. Shweta Ramdas at the Centre for Brain Research, Indian Institute of Science.
Production crew: Ananthapathmanabhan, Esha Srivastava, Priya Raghu, Suguna Ganesh.
Special thanks to Debasrija Mondal, Hiba Ali and Sagar S at the Centre for Brain Research at the Indian Institute of Science.

Vector-borne diseases have plagued human lives for centuries now. Recent advances in molecular biology, and genetics have enabled understanding of infection dynamics of various pathogens causing morbidity and mortality worldwide. Disease control and prevention involves both vector management and clinical alleviation and thus, surveillance and ecological studies play a crucial role in knowing th...
Talk by Prof Anil Gupta on Making grassroots mind matter: Leveraging community knowledge
มุมมอง 3810 หลายเดือนก่อน
Blending formal and informal science is necessary to leverage people's knowledge for developing viable solutions to many societal problems. Often, a question is asked, as to why knowledge-rich communities remained economically poor if their knowledge system was so effective in several cases. The answer is the institutional culture which made the knowledge holders share their knowledge generally...
