À cette histoire, David entre dans une grande colère contre ce riche qui mérite selon lui d'être tué à son tour ; Nathan lui précise alors que lui-même s'est comporté comme l'infâme, en envoyant Urie à la mort, mis en première ligne d'une bataille, pour prendre sa femme. Le prophète Nathan fit des reproches à David pour son péché et dit : « Pourquoi as-tu méprisé YHWH (Yahvé), et fait ce qui lui déplaît ? Tu as frappé par l'épée Urie le Hittite, sa femme, tu l'as prise pour ta femme, lui tu l'as fait périr par l'épée des Ammonites. Maintenant l'épée ne se détournera plus jamais de ta maison, parce que tu M'as méprisé et que tu as pris la femme d'Urie le Hittite pour qu'elle devienne ta femme ». David reconnut son péché et dit à Nathan : « j'ai péché contre YHWH ! » Alors Nathan dit à David : « De son côté, YHWH pardonne ta faute, tu ne mourras pas ». En punition, Dieu tua le fils : « Seulement, parce que tu as outragé YHWH en cette affaire, l'enfant qui t'est né mourra »26.
