I've played video games not particularly well for 30+ years but only recently decided to broadcast that to the world. For the time being, it's mostly Grand Tactician: The Civil War (1861-1865) that gets shared. Maybe some HLL or COH3 if my reaction times increase. War of Rights is pretty much the only FPS my slow-as-molasses reaction time can handle. All time favorite series is TWW and had a Wood Elf army (still do, in fact) back in pre-AOS WHFB.

Learnin' Kards | Japan-Germany | Episode 6
I think the previous episode went really well for the Japan-Germany Kards deck I had, and I don't think we changed too much in this one. The first, quick playthru went so well that I wanted to test it against a greater variety of decks to see how it performed.

The AI Stands Its Ground

Well, 1863 portends a bloody campaign year if it continues as it has started. This might be my longest Grand Tactician episode to date, and that's thanks to the AI's fighting spirit. The tests in this one are all related to the big campaign prizes: Nashville and Richmond. The AI throws us a number of tests and we have to respond.

I don't recall if I played this Kards deck on YT yet, but it's similar to the Germany-Japan one I did at the outset. It's a common archetype, at least at the lower levels, but it's one I still need to work on.

Our Grand Tactician regimental campaign picks up again, and the long-awaited swap back to the CSA to finish the war happens in this episode and the AI helps celebrate by launching offensives on all three fronts, giving us a bunch of battles and leaving us with another one to start the next episode.

For episode three, I checked to make sure I didn't play this deck in the first two episodes of this "noob plays kards" series. This is a new deck, and it seems like one that's right up my alley. For whatever reason, it reminds me of my current fun standard Rakdos enchantment deck I'm playing in Arena, but I digress. UEC is definitely giving the new War of Rights maps a go, so here's one and three-quarters of some of the new maps. Great episode with tons of action
Yeah, this one did not disappoint for battlin’.
Here is an interesting idea for a video. Describe the state of the battlefield to some LLM (chatgpt for example) and make your decisions based on what it tells you to do. See if it can beat an easy low level ai.
It’s an interesting idea. It would be neat if an LLM could help the AI in battle, if not also in campaign. I actually used ChatGPT for modding advice to improve the AI’s performance. It told me nothing I hadn’t already tried so went back to trial and error testing.
Polignac, the G is silent and you say the last part like Yak. Like how you pronounce Cognac, the liquor. French...I imagine he was from Louisiana.
Good to know, and that would make sense!
Always interesting
A long time ago, I started to think that the ability of the a.i. to make better choices largely depends on their initiative and cunning stats of the commander. Higher cunning gives the a.i. more flanking maneuvers. Especially when you auto resolve.
I agree, and I believe that cunning is probably the enemy leader trait I’m most concerned about when facing the AI.
@@greatscots Does that mean you can mod it so the AI is always performing at its best? Either by removing the restriction or giving all leaders max stats?
i need tips to fix fps performance
There have been quite a few of those recently. Their Discord or Reddit are more likely to have helpful answers than anything here.
Thanks for this fun episode. I did notice a few times especially in battles it was hard to hear your voice over the gun fire and other sounds.
Yup, I need to remember to adjust the volume capture in OBS every time I enter a battle and return to campaign.
When clicked on a unit in the campaign map hover your cursor over the circle in the supplies bar. It will tell you how many troops the local depot can supply, as well as the speed of resupply. If the depot is surrounded by many towns in a populated area it can support more than the normal, and vice versa for a barren area.
Good tip for anyone scrolling the comments here.
Need a Napoleon game like this.
Apparently, because a lot of other people have said the same thing. We'll see what they have in store for us.
@greatscots I still have and wanna play the game. But haven't learned the game fully. Big learning curve.
What's best graphic set up
It really depends on what you think looks good and what you’re willing to trade off in terms of fps for quality. The hardware and software you run will also change the answer. You may also want to use the in-game fps benchmarking tool the devs provide.
Seen ads for this a while back but never actually seen it played, interesting.
Yeah, I think I saw it years ago and decided it wasn’t for me without playing it. Now that I’ve started playing it, it’s alright, especially since it’s free to play.
My graphics lag and are janky. Not smooth . Just got new gaming computer. Any tips on settings. Tbx
Sorry, I'm really not that great on those tips. Is any part of your system bottle-necked while running this? If so, which one(s)? The War of Rights Discord and Reddit have better resources for that because I've seen this question answered there before, but from memory, I think running it in windowed and then tinkering with the settings and running the in-benchmark. If you go to those other sources, they may ask you your system specs.
@greatscots tnx
is it possible to mod a truce or peace treaty. would like to be able to mod tha in
I don't think I've ever tried, but I would think it would be relatively easy. Each nation is assigned an "alliance." If you simply modded the CSA and Union to the same alliance number, presumably, they wouldn't be at war, although I'm not sure if the game would accept that (it might just crash without belligerents, idk). I've actually wondered if a War of 1812 or Mexican War mod could be made doing this--simply put USA and CSA states in the same alliance, give Mexico, Britain or whoever in the CSA's alliance number, and run the war from there. I don't think it works, because I've tried loading in with England as the secondary belligerent. I got to the load screen before it crashed. Anyways, I'm blathering about stuff you didn't ask.
Hey man, I’m enjoying your videos but I was wondering if you could make a quick video on how you changed the amount of policies you can take, so you can pick more than 9 policies, I noticed you had yours at like 15. Thanks and I hope you have a good day!.
Hello, glad you're enjoying them. Have you seen either of these: th-cam.com/video/z-wQnTIgAiw/w-d-xo.html or th-cam.com/video/B25_8COstds/w-d-xo.html ? I don't know how to explain it, but it's not that hard to do, but I think it is a little tedious because you have to number and align everything just right, and it might be in two files rather than one.
Thank you for these. just picked up the game a week ago and I am pretty lost.
Welcome to GTCW! I was in your spot some time ago, and sometimes I feel I still am. In some respects, I wish the game was more new-player friendly, but I think it would have to sacrifice quite a bit of depth to do that. The game desperately needs better in-game tutorials and instruction, but the devs have indicated they're pretty much done except for occasional bug fixes. Their next project has begun, though they're not quite ready to say what that is.
123 in game at the moment.
You and I need to have some talks so I stop flooding your comment section with stuff...
The sizes of units were never really standardized. 1 regiment was typically 10 companies of 100 men. Any regiment at 600 men or less would instead be labeled a Battalion. 2-5 Regiments per brigade. A division would have no less than 2 brigades and sometimes up to 5. A corps would have no less than 2 divisions and sometimes up to 5. And several instances where a division would be broken off for temporary independent command, such as when Lee left a division in Fredericksburg while he went to Chancellorsville, or when Pope left a single division to guard South Mt. just before 2nd Manassas.
Take all brigades out of a division if you want the division deleted and X out of the menu and come back. Same goes for scaling.
Also, it is totally worth while to invest in 2-3 small light navies and place them at the crossings to protect both your armies and your towns. And you want to own Memphis, Nashville, Corinth, and Decatur. That rail line will allow you to protect that entire area, while allowing shipping from Chicago and St. Louis all the way down. While giving you a stable and rich cotton supply to stabilize your economy. Making clothing, uniforms, textiles, and cheaper and more profitable along with raw exports.
Use the rivers and railroads whenever you can in the west, build a market next to the ferry crossings. All of your logistical problems will dissipate. It is worth it. Another thing: Monies from subsidies, acts/policies like banking/print notes are deposited on a monthly basis. So say you take the bank act and it says it dumps 120 million a year into your pool, that's 10 million a month.
Yes
I wish they’d keep working on this.
You and me both, although their communication (late November, I think) indicates they might push some bug fixes, but they've moved on to their next project.
The fact that we got 13 new maps was awsome
I'm rather impressed by the numbers my eco is putting out. The c.s.a. is holding on by their short hairs, I might let them retake Charlotte, N.C. so they get some national morale back and I can keep playing this run a bit longer. It's April 13th 1864 in this last one. I'll get some screenshots soon enough but here's some numbers for you. G.D.P. cranked back up to over 1B, but is now leveling off at about 850M. Public Wealth - .62, anything over .6 is prospering Corporate profits for most of the game was between 90-120M, has now settled at about 68M Domestic Trade - 1.8B Foreign Trade - 284M Private Income - 3.7B Revenues: Tariffs - 682M Sales Tax - 449M Income Tax - 557M Corporate Tax - 17M Land Sales - 33M Totals = 1.7B My tariffs and Foreign Trade have never declined to a point where I've ever noticed. Trade has likely declined at some point earlier when the enemy had a navy to run around still. Now they only field 4th rates that keep getting sent against my Ships of the Line...lol Coffee production is over 200. I need to look a bit more closely into this, but I think that having the gold mines in Charlotte, N.C. and the one between Atlanta and Chattanooga increases availability of Coffee since it's a "hard currency". If the devs went as hard as they seem to have in the historical aspect, that would fit perfectly. The British wouldn't trade in fiat at this time. I have about 30 more banks to throw down and my private wealth already increased 0.05+, instantly raising my Income Taxes by 50M-60M.
Very nice!
Hi GreatScots! It has been a while since I have visited your channel. Last I was on there was a small bug in the navy that allowed large production out of a certain southern port, as I recall. I admire your strategies and was thinking about re-installing the game. I have a question, if you could help me. What advantages (the three pre war picks) and strategies (mid war- such as the awesome English 600 yard rifle) should I choose for the easiest Confederate victory? Thanks for any help you might be able to give me ! =) I know you like to play on hard mode, but I prefer a more moderate or easy mode. Thanks again =)
Hello, and welcome back. I've covered a fair amount of that in some videos. There's a CSA one on the first 9 months of a CSA campaign, and I've covered a number of those in various tutorials. In general, I don't build many buildings, focus on the military and financial tech trees (policies and acts) and some of the diplo and ag trees. I'm fine just taking legacy rifles and the ones for basic confederate rifles. Just defend your territory.
@@greatscots Tyvm ! =)
Just did a battle about 5 hours ago. I funneled the AI all the way back to the wall of their entry point. But was only able to pull it off once I got a brigade of infantry, 1 horse regiment and 4 regiments of cannons across the creek. Once I got the cannons up and going, I pushed my center and left flank in to start engaging. Followed up with the brigade I walked across the creek on the right. It was so 🤤when it all went according to plan, which just required patience.
Tutorial is telling you how to play not strategy and tactics. I can’t get my navy to disengage from the forts and never told them to attack the forts in the first place. Helping figure that out is a tutorial. Don’t care about. Walmart. Just a suggestion.
How did you get 11 iron clades in such a short time ?😅
Probably modding. I eliminated what I considered a bunch of silly arbitrary conditions before I can build stuff, but the recruit/ upkeep costs should all be vanilla.
Really do appreciate your videos on war of rights! Its not only a learning tool but its what gets people interested in the game so thank you!
Thanks! It’s the only multiplayer shooter I’ve been able to play long term. It’s a great looking game, incentivizes teamwork among strangers better than any other shooter I know, and it’s deceptively challenging.
I need to get back to this mod, Its the best mod ever made for any game. I love it, its a real load of fun.
It really is. Not enough time to play all the great games out there.
@@greatscots Tell me about it, not enough time and not enough money lol. Especially with modern game prices being so out of touch with consumer's needs.
I played as the CSA for a entire game, I won cause I put together a army with like 150,000 men and hit the north with the army wiped out their entire army right out of the gate and won because i marched and took the capital and etc with minimal chance of resistance. I also dumped a lot into my navy and ended up having enough ships to blockade all the union ports.
Sweet
@@greatscots You can do some wild stuff, also the fishhook formation the union used to defeat the CSA IRL works in the game stupid good, the AI craps itself and cant figure out how to defeat it. They suicide charged me i rolled it around them they were in the middle of a CSA circle and getting smacked with like 30 artillery guns and they started routing and then died, wiped out like 40,000 men to 800 casualties. Was the greatest skewed results ive gotten, and also Joseph Johnston is a hero in my game for being the biggest chad ever and winning everything. I straight up had stonewall jackson literally defending a entire flank on his own dude wiped 3 lines out. Literally made a meme screenshot out of it. He absolutely was standing their like a stonewall in that instance.
This game is so screwy. Nothing works right
A lot of people have that experience. It mostly works for me. Mostly.
The framerate for me looks awesome
Good to hear! It looks good to me, too, but I’m never sure how it captures and appears to others.
26:40 well I guess that's war profiteering 😀
The regimnet on the right is larger and has a longer line which makes the arc of fire bigger.
Transferring troop sis not working well. What is the secret?
Hmmm, I’m not sure what you mean by not working well. Do you mean it’s not working at all or something else? It’s mostly drag and drop in the army transfer tab.
@@greatscots Many times they wont transfer, I don't have enough men or Money to do anything, I 've watched videos for days and they are out doing me all over.. I about 29k troops in split in the west and east. Union is bringing 61k against the east, and 3 to 1 in the west. They shipping is block aiding and I can stop them. Easy level.
Confiscation Act doesn't reduce supply costs by 15%, it increases supply efficiency to armies in enemy territory. The rate at which armies are resupplied. But it is still incredibly valuable.
Are you going off the description in campaignprefs.txt? I'd agree with you, based on its description that "supply flow improvement if unit is on enemy soil..." I guess "improvement" means "improved speed." The language in those files and in game is too often ambiguous.
@@greatscots No, merely observation. Costs only reduced when depots are burned down, shut down with the red button on the side, or logistical reforms are taken. On more than one occasion as the Union, I've stationed the Army of the West at Rolla with the pre built depot in AR. Skipped over the first town after that and moved down to the next in the SW and build another depot. During winter they can starve even sitting on top of a depot. Stops happening after confiscation and I sprinkle a few markets around the local towns to help stuff move. On my current run, I took Nashville as a foothold and secured Decatur, Corinth, Memphis, Grenada, Little Rock, Knoxville, and Chattanooga. In the east I took all of Virginia. So my rail lines extend across the map. I can move armies with ease from the east to the west in mere days. And not need depots in between at all.
Do you flip sides during a campaign? I've only watched your videos sporadically, but I'm going to have to dive into this regimental level gameplay series, though. And try it myself.
Yes, at least in the previous one and this one. I’m debating going back to the CSA, but they’re actually doing well, except with the recent loss of Richmond.
DAWG!! NEW MAP!!!
Yeah, new to me at least. I guess that shows how all my other campaigns have played out.
@@greatscots I know you hate Arkansas. But there's a great map near Batesville in the SE of the state. And control of that town gives you a free factory that helps the local supply lines. This battle map has a bit of everything in it. Very defensible map.
I was playing the Confederate campaign without the regiment part, is it normal for the Confederates to not have the pre-war King Cotton policy?
It depends on the set of 3 pre-war policies selected. If random, then it wouldn’t be surprising. I think it is one of the historical 3 policies.
Is it just me or are the friendly AI dumb af in WL? I've done ran through about 15 campaigns and have finally landed on a setting were both sides are worth af on the field. EASY is the difficulty I found that makes both sides look good imo. I tried very hard and all the friendlies do every time when assaulting is just toss our boys in column formation at the enemy. Where tf did the logic go? AHHHHH! This game makes me so mad.
I frequently found the friendly AI to be worse than the enemy AI in W&L. It’s probably a case of me seeing the friendly AI’s errors but not the AI’s. Anyways, yes, I had a similar sense in W&L.
Game runs so bad. Nice battle though...
It truly does. When I first got the game, it ran decent. But now, it's unplayable for me.
Thanks! Playing it with the Lossless Scaling app significantly improves it. No problem getting 60-100+fps on 1440.
It looks good
I just got this game during the Winter sale. I have been watching these videos for a bit and it has made me want to get it, and boy was it worth the money. Do you think you can make a video explaining the new news about the Grand Tactician series?
That they’re currently working on another project they haven’t announced? If that’s the news you’re talking about, then I’d prefer to hear more from them first because my video would be pure speculation. If there’s other news I missed, but lease let me know.
One way they could have made the eco matter in a much more direct way: If inflation runs away too hard or fast for things like food and general commodities the regions mostly affected should have some type of rioting in play until you either take steps to fix it, or you move in troops to maintain public order like with the NY riots days after Gettysburg or the Bread riots in Richmond when all the women went nuts. Historically a pound of butter (in the south) was $3.50 before the war. During 1864-65 if my memory serves it rose to over $350-$400. The North use to joke that the South had a new General in command...General Starvation.
Reminds me of the rebel uprisings in Rome TW. I can’t remember if the game tracks inflation or not, but tying wealth to national morale makes sense to me. My opinion of the vanilla game was that the relationship between the two was too weak: significant drops in wealth ought to have greater effects on national morale.
Is the mod public?
Yeah, I’ll update the description soon and include the link. It’s basically text files in a Google Drive.
Waaaaait a moment, why is your campaign map movement so smooth???
I have a gamer Pc and it is still stuttery, not laggy but just like stuttery
I’m using the Lossless Scaling app, which was like $7 on Steam. It really works well in GTCW, not so much in fps like WoR.
@@greatscots interesting thanks
