The Cat that Accidentally Made Aviation History
In this video I tell the story of Kiddo the Cat and the airship America. I also ruined my youtube search recommendations by flooding it with cat videos.

How the Area Rule Made Planes Faster
มุมมอง 10K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
Today I cover the Area Rule, also known as the Whitcomb Rule or the "Coke-Bottle" Rule. This genius breakthrough in aerodynamics helped planes to fly near the transonic region by reducing the wave drag from shockwaves. This episode of This Week in Aero covers June 23-29. This week saw many crazy space stories, like NASA selected SpaceX to deorbit the ISS, space trash causing all sorts of issues, a Russian satellite making suspicious moves, and SpaceX becoming the most valuable Aerospace company in the world. Boeing also had quite the week as they attempt to buy Spirit, had another whistleblower come forward, ...

In this video I run through the history of the Bell X-1 and its impact on aviation and aerospace. Top 3 Sources Used: Video Clips: I will update this once I get verification to post links on youtube
I was fascinated by his design for the first human glider flight when I was in third grade elementary school library and it inspired my life and interest in aviation history 💯🆒🦅
"Pedro Coll Font achieved a successful flight in 1883, yet his groundbreaking work was overshadowed by Otto Lilienthal's later attempts. Despite Lilienthal's initial failures, his European connections and resources garnered him recognition. It's time to acknowledge Coll Font's pioneering contributions to aviation, which were unjustly overlooked due to geographical and cultural biases. Let's celebrate all innovators who paved the way for modern flight!"
"Pedro Coll Font, a Venezuelan aviation pioneer, achieved a significant milestone during the 1883 centennial celebrations of Simón Bolívar in Caracas. He showcased a model of his flying machine at El Calvario Park, impressing government officials enough to be granted the world's first patent for a flying device on October 17, 1883. Despite this achievement, Coll Font's contributions were overshadowed by European inventors like Otto Lilienthal. His work remained largely unrecognized internationally due to geographic and cultural biases, highlighting the need to honor his rightful place in aviation history."
the fur will fly.
"Kiddo was the first Cat to attempt to cross the Atlantic by air". What a fantastic quote, both factually accurate and quite witty. Kiddo clearly boosted the morale of these courageous Aviators!
Meowwwww!!!!
❤
Wonder if the cat knew it was in the air
You know this video is going to have more views that your others, right? Do more like this. Thanks.
Silly kitty ❤️🐈
Cats have always been associated with ships….
A BADLY DESIGNED AND ENGINEERED AIRSHIP, FULL OF HYDROGEN, DRAGGING TANKS OF GASOLINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FORMULA FOR DISASTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND A POOR SWEETIE ON BOARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANKFULLY, EVERYONE SURVIVED, INCLUDING THE SWEETIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Take a break. Then keep it going. This is good content.
I love cats! The cat lived but "A second airship, the Akron, was built the next year. It exploded minutes after departing Atlantic City on its attempt at a trans-Atlantic flight. Killed were the crew of five, including its captain, the same Melvin Vaniman who was a survivor of the America."
I love all animals but got stuck with cats in a way. My girlfriend had dog in 2008 that hated men. I love animals, but he did not like me. And i couldn't touch him, So she gave me a 4 year old cat that her coworker hated for my birthday in 2008. This cat yelled to go outside but had never been let loose outside and i let her loose. She became the best thing in my life and I had her ten years. She was still around when that girl wasn't. Tinkerbell was her name. And if you want to be a man in Texas, yell Tinkerbell..
Her dog helped me capture a copperhead snake in 2008, though. Missy was the dogs name.
Hey, I'm subscribing because it was a cool story, you're a youngster and my wife and I rescue cats. All good. See ya next story. My my mother use to call me Kiddo...
Where did their crap go? Did it just fall out the bottom?
Yes. All of their bottoms. Although most of them probably had to push it, however.
"accidentally". kiddo was obviously a scout for our feline overlords gathering information for their eventual rise to dominance. i for one, welcome our feline overlords.
It was a mission to sabotage human technological advancements. Kiddo was successful in his mission in bringing down the airship
cats in early aviation....we need more of this history
I like your way of storytelling, with just the right amount of modern humor.
Ya did good, Kiddo
ohhh my youtube algorithm be eating..... this was fantastic!
We love kiddo the cat!
I am here for the orbital mechanics / propulsion vids!
4:50 that was just cruel of you
But rather funny...
Very interesting video. Looking forward for part 2!
Thanks man I really like this channel! I’m excited to see more engineering, aerospace and history all together! Keep it up!
So glad I found your channel. Exactly my kind of content, perfect mix of professional presentation and memes, and you cite your sources! I found your analysis of this whole situation to be spot on. Please keep up the great work and keep the videos coming!
A Soyuz ride home? Doesn't sound likely, but I'm sure that Boeing would prefer Soyuz over Dragon! 😄
I agree, surely that won't happen. It would probably cause an uproar if they were to come home on a Russian craft
Are you optimistic about Nasa's future?
NASA's future, absolutely. Boeing's though... they really need to get it together soon!
Very glad the third example slide you use is the first American plane to pioneer it.
I like this channel keep it up! 😁
Good video!
Also do a video on Ludwig Prandtl, another giant who actually set up a scientific basis for all the flying we do today.
If you're into aero, explore "bell shaped lift distribution". I was shocked to see that B-21 is still using drag rudders for yaw control, which is essentially the same as xb-35. And we understand BSLD for over 10 years now... I don't get it why they didn't implement it for B-21. At least us eternal kids in RC world can play with it and enjoy our tailless flying wings :)
Commenting for engagement 👍
The "increase in drag of the configuration in all directions and for a GREATER DISTANCE" was a brilliant insight. It was generally believed that the effect of air accelerations was relatively local. Once you understand that the effect is for a much larger distance, the problems with the P-38 become obvious. The combination of the engine nacelles, cockpit gondola and wing combine to create a massive increase in area over a short distance. Each of the components accelerates air, but until you begin to get near transonic speeds, it is really not an issue.
I'm just here for the 8 views
The first airplane model I built as a kid with this feature was the F11F Tiger. I asked my dad about it, as he was a flight engineer. He knew what it was, by name, but could not explain it to me as a pre-teen. This breaks it down very nicely! Where was this video 40+ years ago?!? What? No videos back then? Yeah, but you are here now! I will be checking out that Video that nobody watched. Thanks!
There now over 9 people watched it.
This week in aero sounds like a cool concept for a series, I hope it gets traction.
Thank you! I was looking for something similar on TH-cam but couldn't find anything in the format I wanted (these videos were based off of FNG's "Football This Week", just a lot less funny). I plan on making more of these once I get the time!
I love the graphics at about 4:20 or so. Very illustrative!
I like the harmony in your title.
I got you bro, 8 viewers no more
Great video! Thank you!
hope you keep making videos on aircraft
Oh, so this is why modern planes are ugly. Well, I guess you can't argue with 25% higher top speed.
Commenting for the algorithm god. Hope the channel takes off.
This was very good and the impeccable grammar is a rare and special treat. It's such a joy not to have to decipher garbage while trying to follow a story. 😊
View 255 and like 70!
I'M GONNA WATCH THE X-1 VIDEO!
