Unloading the new Deere.
This is the used (but new-to-me) 157-hour lawn tractor I bought from a local reseller who finds bargains, then resells them. It was a little more than I wanted to shell out, but was still a good value, IMO, so after a little haggling, we settled on a price, and bought it.
Having this snowmobile trailer is great for loading and unloading things. The well-balanced, simple tilt feature of the bed is a good design. Also, the tailgate, which mounts using two 45° angle posts that go into 45° holes in the trailer, can be removed and flipped around, to work as a tailgate, and also flat like you see here.
(The smoke coming from the Kawasaki engine was no biggie IMO, and was from the choke being on, which is a little lever on the carb that sticks. The seller told me about that, so I knew what to do to disengage it at the source. A little WD-40 should fix that.)
The blades were really dull. I doubt they had EVER been sharpened. The nuts that held the blades on had rusted threads, so were hard to remove. Had to hammer on the wrench a little. I keep mine oiled, and will do that to these. It's just what you DO, for goodness sakes! When it was all sharpened, gassed up and ready, it mowed like a BEAST. I learned that my lawn likes the 3 1/2" cut setting. Any lower, and it scalps.
I don't like to gather the clippings, and the plastic side chute blows them down into a long mess as it mows. I held it up with a bungee after figuring that out, blew the clippings together into a couple piles, raked them up, and carted them off to use for cover and compost off in the brush. I have a fun, useful 4-wheeled "Groundwork" brand wagon from Tractor Supply for that :

It even has a dump feature, kinda like the utility trailer!

Bobcat Stalking Deer, 2AM 10-6-23
มุมมอง 11ปีที่แล้ว
This bobcat came strolling up my driveway in the wee hours, probably looking for a rabbit or mouse. the previous day, a blacktail doe and her fawn were in the yard munching on apples. Maybe the fawn was on its menu. Life in the wild!

Elk cows, Snoqualmie, WA. That's what I *herd,* anyway...
มุมมอง 80ปีที่แล้ว
Went for an afternoon drive Friday, and saw the resident elk herd that lives in the valley fields between Snoqualmie and North Bend. There was a healthy herd of over one hundred in the field, but they soon ran off in the distance, across a side road and out of sight. A few stragglers then appeared from the brush and acted as if saying, "Hey! Where'd they all go?!" Knowing they ran off to the NE...

Barred Owl sitting on a branch, Pacific Northwest. 8 min. of just the bird.

This owl just sits here for the whole eight minutes, just moving its head around. But I like to watch, and marvel at how they do what they do. Never know when something exciting will happen! I found watching this owl relaxing. Living out here between complete wilderness and the developed areas of suburban Seattle, I get the luxury of seeing a variety of wildlife come around from time to time, w...
Indoor Hang Gliding Record, set by Dave Chadwick, Seattle, WA
มุมมอง 2442 ปีที่แล้ว
The World Indoor Hang Gliding Duration Record was set here, in Seattle's completely enclosed sports stadium, the Kingdome. (Years later, the Kingdome was demolished, the main event being a staged dynamite implosion. RIP, Kingdome!) A couple other pilots tried to win this competition, and one of them was Steve Alford. They all ran from a ramp made of plywood, that was set up in the "nosebleed" s...
Three deer visitors: Buck, Doe, Fawn.
มุมมอง 103 ปีที่แล้ว
Deer constantly visit my front yard, and find it a peaceful place to take a break from dodging all the predators, dogs and cars. These three started showing up this summer, and come around every day or two. They'll often lie down for a few hours, then saunter off to their next rest stop or grazing area. I wish they wouldn't eat my decorative shrubs, though. Ah, life in the suburbs. South Snohom...
Douglas eats a Pecan, 3 1 2020

This little squirrel cruises the Pacific NW back yard looking for food a couple times a day. Smaller than gray squirrels, Douglas squirrels are about half to 2/3 their size, at least in a local populations comparison. This little feller is pretty darned cute, for a fluffy tailed member of the rodent family. Great coloration. The little dark nuggets are dried Thundercloud plums, from a tree that...
Little Green Hummingbird grooms for a minute or two.

This little Hummer was taking a moment in the September 30th 2019 sunshine to clean and preen before returning to its never-ending quest for sugar. At one point, it sticks its tongue out a few times, showing how it can get to the nectar hidden deep down in some flowers. Cute little thing! It was in the plum tree, about 35 feet from where I was, in the house. Pacific NW birds are fun to watch.

This big boy sure has a thick neck! He is one of the many deer that come through the yard to rest out front or eat the apples that I leave on the trees for the animals. Short clip of blue Angel in a dive 8-5-2018

A Blue Angels jet did a high snap-turn, then I caught it in the camera's field of view for a few short seconds as it dove and gained speed, but it was soon going too fast to track. I was miles away, zoomed way in, holding the camera in my hands. Following this jet was just too tough with that much zoom. But it sure was cool to see!

Landing a hang glider - they make it look so easy...
Nice strafe Larry Jorgensen, I have pic`s of Larry taking us up Dog when it was closed using a trailer and motorcycle, the good old days! being renegade!
Cool.
Who is the pilot? My dad and I invented the Dog call, now its world wide! When we were kids on vacation we saw seals and thats when dad did it for the first time.
1979 I flew the dome, my world record still stands today.
The Dogbark was founded by Chris Drake and my dad Chuck, every time some one arh arh!!....thank you!
Wow! So many!
Correction. I misspoke at the 2:45 mark when I said Mt. Si was 3,400 feet high. The rocky, fog-hidden peak of Mt. Si is about 3,600 feet higher than the field where the elk and I were, and is just over 4,000 feet above sea level. It is more than 2/3 of a mile higher than the town of North Bend, WA, which lies near the foot of this earthen monster.
He also is remembered for taking terminally ill Scott Berkey for a tandem flight, and it could have been with this same hang glider. Scott Berkey had Lou Gherig's disease, and was in the advanced stages when he was granted his wish of being able to fly like a bird, just once in his life. A crew of helpers assisted on launch, and helped to support the glider as Dave began his run, then he, Scott and the glider lifted off into the air. It happened at Dog Mountain, near Morton WA, at the very east end of Riffe Lake. The "crew" then hurried down the mountain while Dave and Scott swooped around, like a smooth roller coaster, and were in the field to help catch the glider so Scott would have a gentle landing. It was heart-warming to see. Dave also took my daughter on a tandem flight from rhe same mountain, and when they landed, she was crying, but with tears of joy, not fear, because she said it was so completely amazing to be able to fly like that. RIP, Scott Berkey. RIP, Dave Chadwick.
We had a great flight, I was strafing them and doing formation, then went and landed, me and Larry did the catch!!!! I was the one that named Dave The Floating Head.....and it stuck!
@@chrisdrake7849 Twisted? Sensor strafer? Wow. Dog days flashback... That is so cool that you and Larry were down in the North field to catch. Watching the launch from about 10 feet behind and to the right, I saw that it was a real challenge to help get Dave and Scott off the hill safely. It was amazing to watch, as everyone was perfect in lifting Scott's added weight to launch that glider and literally throwing him and Dave off... and Dave dun good. Didn't miss a step.
Great times!@@logmeindangit

I liked it! Thanks for posting.
Back in 2000, I was on a bike trip from Minnesota to the West Coast. I had met a fellow rider in Missoula and got into an unfortunate competitive duel with him for the next few days. After sticking it to him him in the morning in which he was struggling to keep up with me, we began the climb from Grangeville and I discovered that I was spent, burned out, totally fried. It was intensely hot and I could barely turn the pedals. The descent, as shown in the video was almost no relief, with the heat building as we came down. Additionally, I had been riding my brakes to the point that the heat and friction rendered them incapable of actually stopping the bike. I just let 'er rip and figured I would coast into something soft at the bottom. The switchbacks were gentle enough to manage and the bike seemed to settle into a reasonably controllable speed. The end of the Grade was a flat or even slight upgrade which safely brought me to a stop. It was 105º at White Bird. We went another 20 miles to an RV park near Lucile. A brutal day.
A nice reward might have been to go through town, hit the river just outside town, and cool down in it. Glad you didn't lose your brakes on the switchbacks.
Thanks for the memories. As a kid I road in a school bus for 2 1/2 years to and from school (White Bird to Grangeville).
What a beautiful place to have spent part of your childhood. It sure was tucked down in there, though. Made me wonder about how late the sun was able to shine down on the town, and how soon it was gone behind the hills to the west. Probably a great thing in mid-summer, but you miss out on sunrises and sunsets being in a "slot" like that. I cracked up when I found and watched a TH-cam video that portrayed the town as a very beer-loving place. OK, I'll say it. It made it look like a haven for laid-back low key drunks... But when I drove down the winding road and then through town, I was curious about what it would be like to live there. I live in the country already, a half-day's drive NW from there.
logmeindangit Well you have to realize it was 50 years ago when I lived there. There were three churches and just as many bars. There was still a sawmill and timber industry in the area. The locals thought nothing of digging up Indian graves for artifacts, poaching wildlife to keep fresh meat in the house, and most the town was related to each other. My mom was horrified that there were still homes with only outhouses and homes with only cold hand pumped water from the well. We did have those conveniences though in our home. To make phone calls we went to the downtown home with the switch board. I think the entire town was on the same party line. Mom wasn't too happy to find out the company house we lived in had a cesspool and not a septic tank when the boards over it collapsed one summer. As kids we loved it though, spending hours riding our horses and playing in the creek or swimming at the local swimming hole on the river. Our folks took us in a jeep into areas I later as an adult explored on foot and horseback now part of the Idaho primitive area. Culturally not a place I'd take up residence at this stage of my life, but still a hub to some beautiful natural resources. Mom always said the town was at least 50 years in the past. Guess that might still be true all these years later. At the top of the hill with the biggest, steepest drop several cars, trucks and vans went over the edge killing the occupants. I always wondered about the homestead at the base of that part of the road and how they dealt with so many rigs tumbling down into the pastures of that canyon.
Wow, I was wondering where the crows go at night after they fly over my home in Kenmore . I had no idea there were so many back in 2013. There should be a lot more now. Thank you for taking the time on that cold Christmas night to record such an amazing event for so long.
How long have you been without power?
+showdown2012 This was a couple weeks ago. Power was off in my neighborhood for a day and a half. The crews were fast to buck up the blown-down trees in the area, and I found out later that three poles were snapped off like twigs just down the street. The power crew was fast when they got to us the next day, and stuck 3 new poles in the ground then got all the wires hooked back up.
+logmeindangit Wow my power was also off for 1.5 day (32 hours). Where I live Couple of power wire were down and they had to fix it. Where do you live at?
Cool. How often do people do this? I want to watch!
water_skipper You are! Right here on TH-cam! There's going to be more flying this weekend, at the east end of Riffe Lake in southern WA. Check it out. Go tent-camping. The weather will be perfect! Unfortunately, the lake level rose too fast this year, and the alternate landing field will be used, a field just north of the hill. From late August through most of April though, the end of the lake reveals a huge flat area that's great for camping and landing.
logmeindangit I'm definitely considering it. What hours? Like just at dawn, around noon, all day, or what? I'd hate to drive all the way there and find out I was ten minutes too late.
water_skipper They'll be there all day long, from around 10-11AM until dinner-time, all weekend, if the breezes are anything from SW to west to north. Just GO! Saturday and Sunday this weekend! This is at the east end of Riffe Lake, on Kosmos Road. Go from Portland north to Highway 12, then east to Elbe, then south to Morton, (go slowly through Morton, they love to ticket! then east about 5 miles, then south onto Kosmos Road. If you need to rent camping, or a shower, look up Taidnapam campground. They rent camping areas and have coin-op showers. Taidnapam campground is just south of the mountain by less than a half-mile. As you drive around the base of the mountain, you'll see a dirt road Y on the left. That's where people with gliders on their trucks will be coming and going. That rod has a locked gate. Stop and ask someone to be a driver or a passenger. Bring a camera!

water_skipper You might even get to hook up with them for the potluck dinner Saturday evening. Bring a little cash, because they can always use it to defray the cost of the food. Last year, dinner was $5. This is a fund-raiser to keep the site operational.
He lacked a sufficient fear of cars, and was hit and killed in late May, 2013. RIP, Gary. You were so cool.
This is at Dog Mountain near Morton, WA.
I was barely awake when I shot this, as my weak voice will attest. It was early morning, and I had just rolled out of the sack and turned on the stereo. It was then that I saw these two deer in my yard, and got the camera to see what I could capture of these passers-through.
Fireman called the sign-post a telephone pole. And we pay them HOW MUCH?
HG pilots gather each year to raise funds for the lease on this Dog Mountain launch site. This place is the favorite of many, a source of hang gliding joy for decades, since the early 1970s. My apologies for the wind noise - the Casio Exilim camera had no filtering for that. The pilots were vocal, had good safety routines and had excellent launches. "Aaaauuuugghhhttt!" (< the unofficial "Dog-bark" - it might sound like someone stepped on a seal, but to a Dog pilot, it is a nice bonding hoot.)
Any windnoise is better than music. Good clip, as if I was there, and that 's the purpose.
you have a really nice place...
I just wet my pants!
