Do pet turtles need to do this if you're treating it well? There's plenty of food, there's no need for them to conserve food and energy. Animals that hibernate in the wild usually do not hibernate in zoos, cuz the weather and food supply is always constant so there's no need to hibernate. Unless the zoo purposely tries to cause them to hibernate to be "natural."

My red eared slider has been basking all day long for a week and not eating. I put him in the water yesterday, and he didn't want to swim or do anything. Then he jumped back on the rock. He looks okay since he was a bit overweight before this. Eyes look fine, the tail is hidden though (I think he's a male, but I could be wrong since it's the first time I have this type of animal) I hear about egg bound but how would I even look for such a thing? He's still feisty as usual, he tried to bite me when I looked at him yesterday. Today is the first time in a while that he got in the water but still didn't eat. His water is clear and not dirty. I take good care of him but I'm afraid to see him basking for that long. He always seems to place himself towards the UV bulb. He's cold, but the temperature barely changed in the house.

Having canoed and portage the backwoods of Ontario Canada for over 45 years , I can tell you that snapping turtles can get up over 100 pounds ( 45 kilograms ) .

The first turtles are common snapping turtles not alligator snapping turtles.

We don't get many turtles on the road here in Australia but we do get plenty of Koala's and Blue Tongue Lizard too. Kangaroos are different from other animals because they deliberately stand in the middle of the road during the day but at night they purposely jump through the windshield and if you both survive that, you'll most likely get kicked to death...

Unless you have a pond in your backyard, do not get a red eared slider. They get too big to be kept in a fish tank, and Sulcatas are not easy pets. They get MASSIVE and live well over 100 yrs old. This list is terrible.
