In my mind stranger things was just about kids coping with tragedies inside their childhood by playing dungeons and dragons. Will got kidnapped but eventually got returned safely. A new kid had moved into town and joined their friend group, but she was a little different. Bob shows up and steps in as a father figure but dies in an accident at work. Billy let the trauma of how his father treated him led him to a drug addiction and an overdose. Barb was extremely depressed and probably mistreated by not only her parents but her friends and wound up missing later (probably from suicide). Eddie was bullied for being weird and one day decided to fight them but things went wrong and got stabbed by one of the bullies when he tried to face them. Hopper was a cop who also stepped up to be a father but got shot on the job and ended up in the hospital, the kids thought he was going to die but he managed to make a recovery. Will is a kid who was traumatized after his kidnapping and is also in the closet about his sexuality. No one really pays much attention to him or even notices that he’s not alright. The realistic parallels to the story are not even that far of a stretch.
