International Standards (ISO 3452-2, ASTM E-1417, ASME V Art. 6) allow the use of water based liquid penetrants and developers. This possibility has proved to have significant economic and safety implications that could be further exploited by Companies.
When working with Bio liquid penetrants, a company has the benefits of the best safety for the operators and the environment, because the safety data sheet and label are free of any risk phrases according to GHS (not harmful, not irritant, not flammable). Bio liquid penetrants contain 0% Organic Volatile Compounds so do not need expensive cabins with active carbon air filtration, and the risks associated with Environmental Agencies (Arpa) periodic tests are also strongly reduced.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the performance of Bio liquid penetrants through:
- An examination of applicable International Standards;
- Real Companies case studies in the valves industry;
- A comparison of cracks and porosities on valves for the Oil&gas industry and on artificial defects as described in the International Standards.
