Data Transformation and Linear Regression in SPSS
This is a short video explaining how to take bi-variate data (an X and Y variable), place them in the statistics program SPSS (version 21), and assess normality of the dependent variable, transform that variable to improve normality, and then run a linear regression analysis to test whether the dependent variable (Y) changes in a linear pattern with variation in the independent variable (X) and whether the slope of that relationship differs significantly from zero.

Test of normality and data transformation in SPSS
มุมมอง 182K13 ปีที่แล้ว
A short video demonstrating how to test whether a collection of data can be statistically distinguished from a sample drawn from a normal distribution. This test is carried out in SPSS. The video also shows the user how to log transform their data and then test whether this increases the degree to which these data approximate a sample from a normal distribution. Why do this? Well, a lot of comm...

Sir Can I contact with You??
sure, but keep in mind, I don't recommend the use of this index. :)
@DrBSchamp please I need your help regarding quantifying the spatial structure of forest by nearest neighbourhood method. Please can you help me in this regard
Thanks a lot!
good
Suppose that, you transformed pretest data and the post test is already normally distributed, now to run the analysis, shall we transform the post test as well? Or we can use transformed pretest values and actual posttest value? I am confuse. Please help,
After the transformation, the sig for sapiro wilk is still 0.03 which is less than 0.05, how can we agree the data are now normally distributed?
Wouw!! Its wonderful
your mic sucks bro
Geez thank you!!!
Thank you so much, this was very helpful.
It was still useful! Thank you! :)
Hi can you elaborate why we measure both shannon dominance index and shannon diversity index at a time to measure diversity.. Why we calculate both? Plz explain what's the difference between them
Sir Brandon, what if the data are still not normal after having the transformation?
Thank you, Sir Brandon.
I can't say how much I helped from your work......🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 Lots of respect form India.
👍
Please how do I find overall Sharnon Weiner index
Excellent!
I've been trying to avoid QIIME/R to obtain this index for a microbiome dataset, and your explanation through this video was incredibly helpful! Thank you so much!
You're very welcome.
Thank You!
It would be better if you italicized the species names. Anyway, thank you so much for this 😊
Qno.1 I have 3 dependent variables. Two of them are in range of normal skewness value i.e. +1 to -1 and have kurtosis in range of +3 to -3, but the third remaining dependent variable is not in normal range of skewnes or kurtosis. I want to transform that variable with square root transform to run parametric tests. So the question is, Can I transform that one variable only and run parametric test on the variables or I should transform all three variables before doing test? should I transform all three variables together even the two of them are already normally distributed? will it create problems to transform only one non normal variable? q.no.2 Can I infer and interpret my data for normality on the basis of skewness and kurtosis only rather than gooing for shapiro wilk test?
Sir my data is not normally distributed now what to do to normal my data in SPSS?
Oh my Goodness, you're teaching people a wrong information.. 0.012 is still non normality... You're so bad person
it is very useful, thanks
I have this unique problem whatever test I apply my skewness decreases to an acceptable range of less than 2 and kurtosis less than 7 but Shapiro walk test and Kolmogorov-Smirnov(test of normality) still comes as significant. can i do this like transform score and mention this range of skewness as test of normality than test of normality?
Thank you for the video, Dr. Schamp. It's very well explained, short, clear, and very helpful.
I am running a MANCOVA and have 4 dependent variable.. Do i need to transform all variables before running my test? or can i just transform the 2 that are needed to ?
Hey Brandon you may already be a winner!
Hey, at the start of the calculation, how comes you're using numbers like =ln(0.26), as in, how do you get 0.26 species? Where did those numbers come from that you started with in other words? I am doing mine and all mine are like 1, 6, 9, 2, 1 abundance... etc? Hope you understand the question, Thanks
Thank you Brandon!
when became variable negative need to log10 ?not result
how would I go about doing this if I used percent cover for abundance?
After the transformation, p-values were still below 0.05, why did then assume they are normal
Yes, I added a comment to the video about that. It is true that the transformation did not alter the data so that it approximates a sample from a normal distribution. Sometimes it is not possible to normalize data by transformation, and sometimes a different transformation is needed.
very helpful thanks
My skewness and kurtosis values are between 1 and -1 but Shapiro-Wilk test and Kolmogorov-Smernov test are significant ... help?!
Hi, Could please cite the resulting CLRM (regression equation) after the transformation is done
could you please send me amended video in reply? 0.012 is still significant.
If you read the below comments, you will see my response to this. A different transformation may help, but this will depend on your particular data set. If your data are right/positively skewed, log (try several bases), root, or reciprocal tranformations may help. Good luck to you!
Thank you for your polite corporation
Extremely helpful for our IPM/applied ecology group, especially for our students. Thanks.
Great video, thank you!
Dude, you saved me on the all nighter I had to do to complete my assignment, and for that I thank you :)
Thanks alot, its a very useful calculation. Can we calculate diversity index if we have only biomass of that species?
Any measure of abundance is fine for this. The values in the video are in fact biomass values.
HELLO ,ONCE i have already transformed my data into a normally distributed data set, how will i able to use those obtained data in data analysis? for instance is in multiple regression analysis wherein an equation model will be created. What will happen to the independent variables? can dependent variable be predicted using the original data value of the independent variables??
Thank you!
Hi. What if i have a categorical variable. Do i need to transform the data then?
I love you! Saved my life. My Allah bless you and your family!
You're very welcome.
Can do this with Ordinal data ( Likert Scale)? Thanks in advance for your answer.
Hey there. Normalizing the data is typically done to use it in a linear model. I wouldn't. The ordinal data are essentially ranks, so you'd likely want to use something non-parametric to analyze them. That said, I don't have a lot of experience with that. This page might provide some help: davidmlane.com/hyperstat/viswanathan/Kolmogorov.html
Hi, I did all steps but Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk are still significant so Data sill not normal how can i solve this problem Plz? the sample = 193
Hi there. You'll need to do other transformations on the data to try to normalize them. Different transformations will work for different data sets. Also, not all data can be normalized.
I was hoping to ask a question but seeing that you haven't replied anyone of the questions in previous comments, well...
Hi there. I answer questions when I can. Please feel free to send one.
worthless - cant see what you are writing in the formula box - text too damn small
Hi there. I suspect the default video settings are too low on your browser. But at the bottom of the video, there's a cog that allows you to change the video quality. At HD, you can read everything. I hope this helps you out.
Also, if you can't read something because perhaps you are working with a small screen, just let me know and I can post the codes here. Best wishes.
