Using a Template to Create a Leather Wine Bottle Carrier
This video shows how to use a Saddle Hills Leathercraft template to make a simple but elegant carrier for your bottles. The whole process takes no more than 10 minutes.
Using 4/5 oz SB Foot Oiltan leather I tested the sturdiness of the carrier with a 24 lb (11kg) bag of lead shot and it stretched the leather a little bit, but held up just fine. That's the weight of about 13 regular size wine bottles.

    I have one exactly like that that I purchased recently. I've been practicing to try and get my skiving right. I did change out the blade to the black olfa blades that made a huge difference. However I'm still having problems actually slicing through the strap itself. Or pairing off way too much making the end of the strap unusable. I see your technique is holding down the strap as you're getting ready to pair it. Hoping that helps as I've gone through several straps intended to make dog collars out of for large dogs and have ruined numerous pieces of leather already. The one thing I wish these had was an adjustment that could be made keeping the blade level to the roller with one screw instead of two. Also the blades that came with mine were garbage thus why I replace them. Thanks for the video. Going to try your technique and see how it works for me. 😊

    When splitting long belts this machine will cut the strap in half. Any suggestions?

    • @saddlehillsleathercraft
      @saddlehillsleathercraft ปีที่แล้ว

      For firm leather like belt leather, and full length, I usually use my bigger hand crank splitter. I find that these smaller splitters work best with leathers that have a softer temper. The reason being, that they work best when you can hold the leather down on the back side as it feeds over the roller, so the leather comes up and goes over the roller, touching about 1/4 of the circumference of the roller. With stiffer leather it's difficult to "bend" the leather around the roller, so to speak. When I do split stiffer leather I take very little off at a time and make several passes to get it to the thickness I want, but only shorter distances, like buckle ends on belts. These splitters do have their limitations with heavier leather when doing long splits.

    whwats the difference between the gel dye and the other Eco Flo dye?

    • @saddlehillsleathercraft
      @saddlehillsleathercraft ปีที่แล้ว

      Antique gives you more contrast between the raised areas in your project (where you wipe it off) and the deeper tooling impressions. Regular dye doesn't give that much contrast between the two areas. Also, antique is thicker (larger molecules) than regular dye. Regular dye will stain everything, whereas antique will only stain areas that have not been "resisted".

    Cool. Don’t your edge circle lines’ distance depend on the size of the camouflage tool?

    • @saddlehillsleathercraft
      @saddlehillsleathercraft ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really, because you can squeeze or stretch the camo tool impressions to fit whatever size the circle is. I go around about 3/4 of the way, then I check to see where I'll end up by making really light impressions. That tells me if I need to squeeze the last few together a tiny bit or stretch them apart. You can't see these small adjustments in the final outcome.

    • @hughanderson7285
      @hughanderson7285 ปีที่แล้ว

      I meant because of how close the lines are to each other. If the flare of the tool is wider it might touch the other tool’s line- almost. Ending up with a skinny ribbon.

    Hi, I was wondering if i could bounce some things off you about this splitter. I bought this guy namely for 1.5": strips of 15oz hermann oak saddle skirt. its what i make my belts out off. Primarily i wanted to dress the flesh side while taking a minimal about of weight off. Just to clean it up. Generally I clean up the flesh side by hand just to make it presentable and knock off all the membranous bits off . I also would like to use it to skive the turn of the belts as well. well, I cant get it to skive consistently. Ive been able to successful skives some test pieces but its just not consistent and ive ruined 3 project and a lot of leather. im wondering if 1.5" 15oz hermann oak is just to much for the machine. im considering sending it back. Maybe you could help me trouble shoot it? Hope so! thanks.

    • @saddlehillsleathercraft
      @saddlehillsleathercraft 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there. I use mine primarily for soft (milled) leather up to 3" wide. I have used it for the turn on 10-12 oz HO belts, but never for the full length of a belt. I have a hand crank splitter for that. When splitting longer thin pieces, I find that I need to hold down the side that feeds into the blade, as well as pull down on the side coming out, so it has lots on contact with the roller with a considerable amount of tension. Then it works great, but I imagine that's hard, or impossible, to do with saddle skirting. You could also play around a bit with the position of the blade, maybe bring it out just a touch further, but I realize you don't want to waste too much leather for testing, and for sure no more real projects. I'm not sure what else to recommend.

      I’ve had the same issue recently making belts with herman oak. Ruined 2 belts when thinning down the turns. Blade might have been getting dull, can’t really say for sure. I will say that by leaving 2-3 extra inches on the end to pull down on when slicing helps.
