Hey there!
I see you've stumbled upon my humble corner of the interwebs- WELCOME! My up and coming channel is under renovations and I'm STOKED for the direction in which TheDenverDiaries is headed!!! With a new focus on 'Service, Productivity, and Self-Care', this is just the right place for globetrotters with a purpose to hangout and make fun of my crappy videos.

Positive Friday Vibes
It's been AWHILE since I've posted, due to all of my rebranding efforts for The Diaries, but I wanted to drop a little kindness in to break up the reign of negativity in the media these days.
How do you spend your Fridays now?! Am I the only one making a huge effort to differentiate between weekdays and weekends?! Leave me a comment, I could use some good ideas.
Take Care!

Peace Corps China: Last Day!
มุมมอง 3246 ปีที่แล้ว
I walked into my last class of my last semester as a volunteer English teacher in China. I didn't have much of a plan, just to play some games and treat my students to a movie. Well, little did I know, they had something entirely different planned. I'm going to miss these lovely people!
Peace Corps China: Hardest Part of Service
มุมมอง 2.4K6 ปีที่แล้ว
I was recently asked about the most challenging part of my service while on a conference call with the incoming 24 cohort (Man, I'm getting old!). I felt like my answer was a little confusing given the limited time we had to get through everything, so I wanted to go into a little more detail here and address future PCVs in general, because this could definitely happen in any host country. Remem...

Peace Corps Eats: Grandma's Kitchen
มุมมอง 1267 ปีที่แล้ว
Finally! Peace Corps Eats takes us to glorious Chengdu, a foodie destination and lovely break from the constant beef noodles of Gansu province. If you find yourself in Sichuan, you can "have a try!" My overall "rating" for Grandma's kitchen was 4/5, due mostly in part because I had literally been on a train for the last 24 hours and this restaurant was the first meal I had besides instant noodl...
Peace Corps: Why I'm Here

This is the visual component to a journal entry I wrote last year during the transition from a low point in the early part of my service. During this time, I was struggling with unwanted attention and finding purpose at my site. What you hear in the video is me reading the journal entry from that day (which seems like so long ago!). I never posted it, because it seemed too personal at the time ...

It definitely wasn't the birthday I expected, but today my school surprised me with a pretty great gift. Even though I can't use it for what they intended, it will jump start my Secondary Project at site and hey.. it's the thought that counts! I know this video is a little long, but at the end of the day, this post is for me. (And, despite my ranting, it ends on a positive note! Promise!)

RIP Peace Corps China ♥🇨🇳 Forever in our hearts
Hi, Denver! Your channel is so refreshing and welcoming. I hope you make more videos. New subbie here.
Welcome Nakia! Although my life is totally different from when I was in Peace Corps I hope I can eventually do something useful with this channel haha!
Hi! Thank you for your video! I am considering taking the last semester of my senior year off; would it be possible for Peace Corps to accept me?
Hi not sure if you got the answer! But one of the requirements is to have a bachelor’s degree when applying
thanks!!!!!
Hey hun! You were really helpful in researching my peace corps location. Happy to see your face again. Hope all is well
Thanks! Hoping I can be helpful in more ways pretty soon!
sounds like alot of work.. its cool tho 😎
thanks for the tips. im going to drop a truth bomb for your younger viewers just to give them some idea of the history that they are going to be dealing with. jfk wasn't able to keep our cia/MIC in check and to this day we are surrounded bye people that may not be telling the whole truth. also may explain why some of your students where less than interested. th-cam.com/video/cjpd0M08e_Y/w-d-xo.html ; th-cam.com/video/s-fJ9V3tZV8/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for sharing your experience and tips with us!!!
I stumbled onto your videos this morning laying in bed with insomnia. I have applied to Peace Corps and have an interview scheduled for next week and am being considered for TEFL in China at a college. Your videos have inspired me! THANKS for sharing.
Denver, Thank you so much for starting this digital diary about your experience in China. I just recieved my acceptance letter and will be in China 2020! I'd love to connect with you over email to hear more about your experience there as a WOC and some advice on how to navigate a different culture while being a fellow WOC.
Hi Denver! I've loved watching your videos sinceI am interested in the peace corps! How much mandarin did you know before departing for China? and how much do you think your language level has improved since? thanks!
Hey Dayna! Glad you like them, I have so much old footage to edit.. haha I knew about a semester's worth of crappy Mandarin and had honestly forgotten most of it, so I was Novice-Mid when I joined and I was Intermediate-Mid by the time I left. Some people go from complete novice to Advanced-low! But it really depends on how committed you are to studying when you get to site... I wasn't haha
Hey Denver! I just got my invitation to serve for the Peace Corps in China!! I am so excited!! I have already watched all of your videos, but I can't wait to watch them all again! Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with us and the world!
That's amazing!!! Congrats, I know you're gonna kill it!
@@denvergovernor2857 Thank you again for your up close and personal videos! They are great and really encouraging! And I also want to thank you for reaching out to me and telling me about the Spicey group chat for volunteers of color. That was another piece of encouragement for me!
I will definitely be coming here, if I get an invitation to serve. Fingers crossed.
Denver! you did an awesome job. It was great getting to know you from PC 21 :) Congratulations on your service and you have many great things ahead of you coming very soon -- Ben
In retrospect I really think the most difficult part of my service was trying to get out of my comfort zone as an introvert.
Hello Denver! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and feelings, they are incredibly valueable to me as a woman of color who is strongly thinking of applying to be apart of the Peace Corp in China. I actually wanted to ask you if there were places in your province or other provinces nearby for one to get simple braids like corn rows or large senegales twists or any kind of braiding style. I have 4a/b hair, and it would be difficult for me to maintain it everyday without it being in some kind of braided style. One of my friends from college who is a native chinese told me that I would definitely be able to find a place, especially in Guangdong, because "chocolate city" is there due to an iflux of African immigrants who settle there. Despite her telling me this, I am doubtful.
Hey! Yeah, I feel you, maintaining hair while abroad is a concern for most women of color in the Peace Corps! Most of us come into service with braids or twists and can quickly be connected to hair services that former PCVs of color used during their time in China. In the first three months, you aren't allowed to travel so I would try to get your hair done right before arriving to China, then you can easily make a weekend trip to higher end places in larger cities, or consult the "Spicy Black Folk" WeChat group for recommendations. I wound up getting my hair braided in Chengdu last weekend in someone's apartment, but probably could've found someone in my town if I looked hard enough!
Omg! Thank you so much for this reply! I am so grateful that you took the time to reply to me, a stranger- this information is so helpful and reassuring-not that I would let something like hair keep me from taking advantage of an amazing and possibly life changing experience, but it definitely was a concern of mine. But this is great to know, and makes me even more excited to apply to the Peace Corp in China. Could I also ask?? Did you ever at anytime feel even remotely that your safety was compromised at any given time?? Also, were you able to learn a great deal of mandarin? I have studied mandarin for a year, and would really like to become fluent, which is part of the reason why I want to apply for this opportunity.

Haha no worries, anyone with a spirit of service is no stranger to me! I can tell you that I feel much safer in China than I do in America. This is in part due to the cameras that are literally everywhere, and in part due to the societal emphasis on 'harmony'. This isn't to say you should throw caution to the wind lol as long as you employ the same standard of awareness and common sense that you do in the states, your chances of becoming a target are very slim. Pickpocketing is currently the most common threat. Seriously haha. And yes, as someone with minimal Mandarin experience before moving to China, I learned quite a bit during Pre-Service Training and throughout service, because only two people on my campus spoke enough English to feel comfortable communicating with me in that way. You will be provided with a monthly language stipend if you want a tutor at site, and there are language books here for self-study as well. And of course you could always just leave your apartment and practice with everyone you encounter. That's how I learned most of my Chinese - because I genuinely had to get things done for my survival lol
Thank you so much Denver for this information! It is really helpful and reassuring. I will definitely apply to the Peace Corp in China. If I were to get an invitation letter, I would leave around June 13th.
Hi Denver! I really enjoy your insights into life as a PCV. I was wondering if I could perhaps pick your brain a bit as I'm seriously considering applying and, if selected, would like to teach English in China. Would it be possible to email you a few questions about your experiences as a PCV and the application process? Best Wishes, Dev dp11366@gmail.com
Can I ask you for some questions. I will be applying this fall to PC China. <3
Hey! I'm definitely willing to help answer some of your questions, but recruiters tend to respond faster and have a lot more insight into the overall process. Either way, best of luck with your application!
Great video, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! I'm actually part of the incoming China 24 cohort and am leaving to Chengdu for PST this upcoming Thursday. I've been pretty nervous but also ecstatic for the new chapter. Loved your humor, by the way, definitely eased my nerves a lot!
That's so exciting!!!!! I'll be around this summer, maybe I'll catch you in Chengdu. Safe travels, and enjoy a nice cocktail before you leave staging, because the alcohol here is bad news haha
You can tell how much they love and respect you! Im glad you connected so well with this younger class
Your students love you so much 👍
This is really heartwarming. Thank you for sharing bits of your Peace Corps journey with us!
My pleasure
I’m currently serving in Armenia. Learning a new language, at age 60, was challenging. I’m almost halfway through service and happy to saying that I’m still learning. We’re tested three times in Armenia, end of PST, mid-service, and close of service. In the 1980s, I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Kenya. The hard part was being African American in a village that believed all Peace Corps volunteers were white. I’m now in the process of applying for PC China. If accepted, I will leaving Armenia, the first week of June 2019, and head to PC staging three weeks later. I gave myself the same amount of time with Armenia. I retired from Duke University on Feb. 28 and arrived in WDC for staging on March 18th.
Wow! You're a Peace Corps guru at this point!!!! In China, we're also tested three times and I'm still amazed at how much we've all learned throughout service. Did you get the same assumptions in Armenia that all volunteers are white? I'm CONSTANTLY called an African in China and, although there is nothing wrong with being African, it 's frustrating at times to always have to remind HCNs that America has black citizens, too. Best of luck in the application process! I'm sure you've already been chosen. Sending positive vibes your way :)
It’s the same here. When I say I’m American, people think “recently” moved to America, from Africa, and they still want to know about my family, my ancestors. First generation African Americans, serving in PC Armenia, can answer that question. I cannot. That’s when being a retired Librarian for African Studies and African American Studies comes in handy! :-) From your lips to God’s ears, on my being accepted. Thanks!
I’m applying for 2019
For China, I should have said.
Yessss!!!!!! Best of luck! You'll have to keep me posted.
The growth and resilience you've shown is nothing short of inspiring. You're almost at the end!
I can't believe it haha
I'd say the most challenging part of my service has been encountering students who've never had the opportunity to chase their dreams while simultaneously trying to be respectful of the culture and system I'm in. The educational system often prevents students from choosing college majors which ignite their passions. However, it's been a privilege to meet the students who leverage their specialties (unwanted or not) into something that works for them. Btw what's that stock footage at the beginning? Lol.
Hey! I’m really interested in serving in China for Peace Corps. Would you mind answering some questions I had about applying to The Tefl program
Absolutely!
Nice, thank you! I don't think there is a direct message feature on here. Do you have an email I can reach you through? It would be nice to get some personal insight from a black volunteer!
Hey! You can actually send me one through my website! denvercaprice.wixsite.com/mysite/contact-me-1 I don't mind telling you my email, just don't want randos spamming me haha
Awesome video! Also, I love Odesza 😍
Me tooo! Listening to their newest album now!
wow it seemed really fun to be in NYC hah❕ I just can't stop watching it over and over again lol. The music in the background is dope and so entertaining as well. you've got such a taste. (you've earned a fan)

I did understand your frustration while getting along with people you had no actual connection with and solving troubles on your own unexpectedly. I‘m glad that it finally went well. the bday party was amazing. ;))
You look gorgeous! - Kayla S
You'll be featured soon ;)
...oh god...
Your vids are my favorite!!!
You should make a "day in the life" video!!
OMG I just discovered your videos and its making me STOKED for my service. high highs and low lows!! Good luck with the rest of yours!!
aw thanks a lot!!!
Such a good video! I think it's your best one yet!! Can I ask, what was happening during the gift exchange? I've never seen something like that with everyone in a big circle. Thanks!
hey! Thanks! We just played a couple of Christmas songs and passed the gifts while the songs played. Everyone kept the gift they had when the song ended
I'm in the process of going through medical clearance for PC China and your video has caused some mixed emotions. I hope I meet people who I can hangout during the holiday but I know I'll still be emotional about not being home. Fingers crossed that I pass clearance. Thank you for your videos. Happy Holidays!!
yeah, it will be tough, but it's so worth it! Thanks!
THIS IS AMAZING!!!
Thanks!
You inspire me everyday lovely! You have such a positive impact on people and a glorious, giving heart! I can't wait to see you again. I'm so proud and am rooting for you everyday! -Kayla
Awwwww I love you!!!!! I'm coming home in January for a visit!!! Let's hang!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing. I have been considering PC and going to china for a while. I've been learning the Chinese for 2 years now. I want to teach English there. I'm worried about my level of experience teaching English though. Did you have experience before joining PC and what section did you serve under? (education, youth & development...etc?)
I had no experience teaching before joining the PC. They will train you 2 months before service, and you will have multiple trainings throughout your service. There's also professional peer support (PPS) that provides lesson plans and activities. Peace Corps China only has the option of teaching English at the moment.
Hi Denver. My name is Jeanita I am interested in joining Peace Corps. China is at the top of my list because I visited for a short study abroad trip. I would be open for teaching english but I have a degree in Business. What was your experience applying/ actually getting into the program. Did you ever get to go home and visit your family? Sorry, i know these are a lot of questions. Thank you xoxo Jeanita
Honestly, having a background in volunteering in general is helpful and proven cultural sensitivity and adaptability. During your interview, they will ask you to give examples and if you have no international experience, you can try to demonstrate your abundance of people skills (soft skills in general). You do not need any teaching or Chinese experience whatsoever :) Hope this helps!
Happy birthday! Sorry it didn't go how you had hoped. Not to defend what your counterpart did, but Peace Corps does say that volunteers are technically on the clock 24/7. So any last minute notices are still your responsibility, according to them.
Thank you for the birthday wish!!!! And yeah I know.. they told us that almost every day of training lol. I never said it wasn't my responsibility, I only said it was frustrating (in so many ranting words ...). In fact, being the first and only foreigner at my site, I hadn't missed anything or declined any request since I began service (I had to build A LOT of guanxi haha). Even the Staff said it was her fault for being so last minute. You are definitely correct in saying we are on the clock 24/7! It's amazing how the 9-5 mentality disappears here and how even small outings like going to a restaurant or the bank can become so stressful just because you're in China and "on". Are you currently serving somewhere?
Assuming I pass medical clearance, I'll be serving in PC China 24 next year! Accepted my invite earlier this month. Your videos have been super helpful (as well as entertaining) to me in getting an idea of what I'm going into, thank you soo much for uploading them!
Nice! I don't know who's in charge of the PC China 24 FB page, but I HIGHLY suggest allowing the 23s to join. They can offer everyone so much insight into preparing for service... also, they have been complaining to us 22s about it, so you guys need to start off on the right foot xD and congratulations!!!!!! Medical really is a pain, best of luck!
I'm in complete agreement, and I thought it was odd that no past or current volunteers were in the group - it's been really quiet in there as a result. No one's been asking questions, because there's no one there who will know the answer. I just made a post to ask if it could be opened up to 23's. Hopefully the group owner agrees!
So, Scott agreed, and now 23's will be allowed to join. He made more of us admins so there will be more people available to approve the join requests. If you talk to any 23's let them know they can join now. Thanks for the headsup about this btw.
Dang I even got misty eyed watching this haha Do your students text you a lot? If so, what do they text you about? Thanks!
Hey! My students are actually pretty low level, so I get a lot of "Hello teacher!" "You are so beautiful!" "Class in interesting" sort of messages. Recently, a few of my students have been wanting to hangout (only took a year haha) so they have been texting more about my free time and if I want to do KTV (karaoke in a fancy room). Thanks for commenting!
I am a female of color and after i graduate from college this year I am serving in the peace corps in China. I would love to talk to you more about it. Just so I know more what to expect being a person of color in China.
Absolutely! You're a 24?!?!? We just might cross paths when you arrive!
I have some questions as well. How can I contact you?
Hey! You can find me on facebook! facebook.com/denver.governor
I am also going after graduation I would love to tall to you as well
That can absolutely be arranged. I'll be in Chengdu during the 24 PST so we can also talk in person when you arrive :)
