Hi folks, I’m sharing tips, tricks, lessons learned regarding permaculture, gardening, mini-homesteading, and raising small animals (chickens, rabbits, goats and bees) at 40 N latitude from northern Colorado.

Bunnies and BULLSNAKES!!
I’ve been wondering where all the bunny nests were this summer, I finally found one but with only 4 babies (which should have been a sign of trouble). Finally discovered the culprit- a huge bullsnake cleaning out the rabbit nest!!!

Using heavy mulch for weed control!!

I’m am all about the mulch for weed control. If you lay the mulch on thick, it will deprive the weeds of sunlight. Adding a layer of cardboard on top of the soil is also helpful to suppress weeds. All of this material ends up just composting in place over time, improving soil health.

In this video I inoculate my garden bed with Wine Cap mushroom sawdust spawn. I’m hoping for a mushroom harvest in the fall. I will follow up if these establish and I get a harvest.

In this video I check the splits for fresh eggs and add a frame of fresh eggs to any split without freshly laid eggs (indicating a queenless split). The queenless splits will turn the freshly laid eggs into queen cells and rear a new queen. Typically I would do this after 3 or 4 days. My does were digging an escape tunnel- so I had to modify it he hutch to better contain them. I decided to start modifying the hutch to make it more durable, functional and easier to manage.
