Maybe you’ve heard what’s going on right now in Neo Evangelical circles where there has been a dramatic increase in the number of supposed “bible experts” claiming the Russian invasion of Ukraine is a fulfillment of biblical prophecy. All over the Internet, hundreds, if not thousands, of the Neo Evangelical teachers and preachers talking about an obscure biblical term-“Gog and Magog.” And they’re alleging this term refers directly to modern Russia. OK, so why is this a big deal? Well, there’s a guy in the Bible, an ancient Jewish prophet named Ezekiel, who has a bible book named after him, in which, he is said to have predicted a future war between a prince named Gog, who presided over a couple tribes that were part of a larger nation of people called Magog, and that just as this Gog gathers an army to attack Israel, God is going to supernaturally intervene and destroy his army. Well, there’s just one little problem with this prophesy; it never happened! Now, a lot of scholars are convinced Ezekiel never actually wrote the book named after him, where this prediction about a war between Gog of Magog (Oh, sometime over the centuries, the term got mistranslated into Gog AND Magog) and Israel. One reason is because Ezekiel lived during the time the last independent tribe of the Israelites, Judah, was invaded, destroyed, and most of the inhabitants, including Ezekiel, were carried off as slaves to Babylon! So, for Ezekiel to have predicted a war against Israel, he would have had to be talking about a time in the future, once the nation was restored…which was actually something he believed would, eventually, happen if the Judahites would finally repent of their sin of idolatry. Well, the Judahites (Jews) most certainly did become solid monotheists after their captivity in Babylon, and once the Persians invaded and took over Babylon some half a century later, a lot of Jews returned to Judah in several waves and, while it took many centuries, they finally did establish an independent nation for a little while, in the middle of the Second Century BCE. OK, so who cares? Well, somewhere between the time Ezekiel lived and died in Babylon, when a collection of his thoughts were finally written down, but most likely amended over the centuries, here comes this prediction, in Ezekiel, Chapters 38 and 39. We don’t really know much else about this Prince Gog except that, whoever he was, he never got to lead his attack, so God never had to stop his army. So, assuming there ever really was a Prince Gog, he had to have lived and died over 2 to 2 and ½ thousands of years ago. Now, the book of Ezekiel (38:15) mentions Gog, his two tribes of Magog and numerous allied nations would attack “out of the NORTH,” so, this is where so many of today’s Neo Evangelicals get the idea that Gog and Magog is Russia! Though this would mean Gog and Magog was not just attacking from the North, but originated from the North…and we’re talking about WAY, WAY, WAY to the North of Israel! Jerusalem is about 1700 miles from Moscow, meaning, it’s highly unlikely anyone in Judea even knew who it was that lived that far away or that the world was even big enough for there to be a land and a nation that far away! This is why most real scholars believe the tribes referred to in Ezekiel 38-39 were actually located in modern Turkey…so, definitely not Russia! But these facts have not stopped today’s Neo-Evangelicals from re-interpreting the failed prediction of Ezekiel into a prophecy “coming true before our eyes!” Actually, this isn’t the first time Christian conservatives have done this! During the Cold War, the Christian Fundamentalists (this was before they dropped their overt attempt to hang on to Segregation and merged with the Neo Pentecostals and the former, apolitical Evangelicals, in the mid-1970s to become the Neo-Evangelicals of today) argued loud and long that the Soviet Union was Gog and Magog…only to stop saying that anymore after the USSR fell apart in 1991! For 30 years, there was blessed little discussion in Neo Evangelical churches about Gog and Magog, and even the belief in the Rapture took a back seat behind the much larger focus on making political gains for the Republican Party which had, by the Mid-1980s, co-opted the beliefs of the conservative bible churches in order to secure support for the Mega-Millionaire Class’ agenda to bring an end to all the measures of the New Deal that brought about the largest Middle Class ever known, peaking in the 1960s. Now, though, the Invasion of Ukraine has revived the belief that Gog and Magog, somehow represents a country that was centuries from coming into existence at the time the Bible was written. Why, then, are the Neo Evangelicals doing this? Well, for the same reason the Fundamentalists did in the middle of the last century, and why John of Patmos (the writer of the apocryphal Book of Revelation) did at the beginning of the Second Century-to make it seem like the Bible is directly relevant to today by co-opting current headlines, all in the hope of deceiving people into thinking everything else they CLAIM the Bible says should be obeyed without question! In other words-They want to CONTROL the minds of people! So, instead of calling on their flocks to do all they can to help the people of Ukraine as they are suffering from so much devastation, while fleeing for their lives by the millions with nothing but the little they can carry, much of the Neo-Evangelical leadership is spending their time and energy on seeing how they can make more political hay out of this conflict and to fill up their pews with more compliant sheep! I remember my first sermon preached from that pulpit over 34 years ago. It was 1985 on a Sunday evening youth service and Adrian Turpin and I shared about 20 minutes each. I preached on Job and got emotional during it. Having said all of that...Justin looks like he is holding it together pretty well. Great job Justin, keep up the good work.
Wonderful testimony from a wonderful man of God. Ray and Wanda has “walked the dark hills” , but never gave up on God. I met them when I was a student at EC in 1973. Wally was in the backseat of their car. When they left, Bill told me about them and their work for God. For the first time , I questioned why God would let Wally be so sick. The answer came so quickly. Wally was a part of their ministry. If you don’t believe that, go anywhere in this conference and mention their name . One of the first things you will hear is all about Wally, youth camp, and the many years of faith this family has had and their ministry. They are are wonderful people and family. To God be the Glory for the tears they have served, even under the most difficult of circumstances. We love you Ray and Wanda, and your rewards in Heaven will be many. Love, Bill and Phyllis Jarrett
