It’s relieving to know that 2-3 years of experience after undergrad is the norm
So it is inappropriate for applicants to write about their diagnosis and experience in terms of mental health but this guy is comfortable to say that he can recognise porn when he sees it but can’t describe it. Why should anyone listen to him. This is well out order! Silly old man.
Approved...
Focus on an APA approach program and internship. That is really the only difference maker for career opportunities...
I have been a Psychologist for over 30 years. I always recommend the MSW route if people are considering stopping with the masters. It offers plenty of options s with licensing, private practice and working in a variety of medical and mental health settings. MSW for sure... 🙂
Either way...be prepared for huge student loan debts and a career with a very high stress and burnout rate.
I have a question. You said that you should only mention 1 mentor who you really want to work with, however I have seen some grad programs say to “identify 2-3 faculties that aligns with your research interests”, and other say “identify a faculty you’re interested in working with”. I’m curious if this is more of how the application process work between different programs, or is there a universal answer for it.
Honestly please...is it really that difficult to be selected for a do ctoral program in Psychology. I see a number of doctoral programs in social media actively advertising for applicants. And tnese are APA approved programs.
Is it really that difficult to be accepted into a doctoral program in clinical psychology? I see a number of ads in social media for schools soliciting applications. And these are APA approved programs. It doesn't seem like the process is as selective as it was in the past.
Clinical is for me!

It's important to understand that if you take the route of a Master's program, this higher level degree does not alone allow you to practice privately. You will need to take state licensing exams on two levels (for Social Work). One test to practice as a clinician under supervision and the second to achieve independent clinical status. Before sitting for the second level of licensing, you will need 2 years of documented supervision (in my state) as well as years of work experience. So the actual amount of time before you can practice independently is approximately three years following your MSW degree.
Thank you, these videos are so helpful.
I have been listening to these podcasts like music! 😂 I keep them on replay because the information that’s been given here is so rich it gives me a clear description of what is expected in my application. I cherish these so much! Thank you.
Hi! I have a paper that I am planning to publish by next year but I am applying to PsyD programs this year. When you mention clinical research - does it have to be experimental? Specifically, my research focuses on distress tolerance as a risk factor for addiction :)
I've been binge watching these videos. You ask useful questions.
Helpful
This whole podcast was so helpful and informative, the host and the speakers are giving good advice without any unnecessary info. Thank you so much for that!!! How can an international student navigate through this if we have very limited opportunities to publish and very few or no labs for undergrad students to work at, in my case, I'm currently in my 3rd year of uni, and i have written a review of literature paper past sem, according to my advisor's guidance, and now I'm trying to write another paper this sem and hopefully one more in my 4th year, but my options are very limited and i may not be able to publish in well known journals or get LORs from well known faculty, can you pls give me some advice to make my application more competitive??
this was really helpful thank u :)
Glad it helped!
What courses/majors do applicants have in undergrad though, that they have at least a 3.6? Would STEM majors, who would have a more difficult course load and lower gpa (less than a 3.6), be admitted? A 3.3gpa was mentioned (without a specific major). What would be a cutoff for STEM?
Hi. I just found your channel and I cannot express how thankful I am for this piece of information. Thank you so much.
You are so welcome!
Just want to chime in and say how HELPFUL your channel and videos have been. Thanks a lot!!
Thank you! This was great!
This is one of the most insightful series/podcasts that I’ve seen! I hope you guys are doing well and hope for more content in the future!!
Incredibly useful interview! I'm feeling a lot more confident about finishing my applications thanks to this information.
I have schizophrenia. I completed my MBA with a 3.8 GPA from the Stevens Institute of Technology. I would like to pursue a Ph.D. in psychology. Should I pursue it? Want to do research only on schizophrenia-related work. I am not doing this for anyone else, but purely to make my life better. Please guide me
Thank you for this amazing series!
Thank you
this is something I'm going through right now. I have a 3.30 GPA right now as a result of some personal issues during the pandemic, and although I'm working to get to a 3.5/3.6 by end of this final year, I'm concerned I still wont be competitive enough
Great insight!
Not true I did lot of research over the years on this topic. And I even asked ph.d proffers. I found when it comes to medical school usually they look at your race if your white European more likely your accepted other race they give them the left over. European countries wants white ppl to be in charge.
This is an excellent video with great advice.
Thank you for this!
Thank you for this brilliant serie!
thank you so much for this!!!
Thank you so much for this episode! Please continue your podcast, you have a sincere follower here. Hope to see more from you.
This made me so happy to read! Thank you :) I would love to hear what kinds of things you'd want to see from us in the future!

Thank you so much for the video! Do you have any templates or examples of a well written letter of intent?
Hi Saul, thank you for the comment. I don't personally have any templates or examples, but I found this document online that may be helpful. It is not mine, and I am not able to comment on whether the examples here are all well-written personal statement - my expertise on the matter is limited. Perhaps it will strike some inspiration for people, but keep in mind that all statements are different, and the key is to write a statement that is unique to you. docs.google.com/document/d/11vTrJDNSXJR0w7SYhz_nYJ8oc6OA6DXAhStWrLxfaQ8/edit.
With a thumbs up from Susan Rogers, I had to Subscribe. Thank you all... I've gotten so much out this. Continued Success!
