I was thankful that I had a chance to sing in a quartet at that convention. It was the last time I sang with the All Stars quartet as I was being transferred from Buffalo to San Antonio by the US Air Force. The night before we departed we sang our final song to our wives - to the tune of “For all we know, we may never meet again.” It was a sad farewell.

2005 was my first international, and also the first time I heard these guys live. They got me interested in 1970's barbershop, which is still my favourite era; BSU and the Oriole 4 are two of my all-time favourite quartets. As an EVG guy, I was able to hear them a few times after this. They really were a treasure, great guys. Footage like this is golden. Thanks for sharing!

They were simply the greatest singing quartet there ever was. Extending the legacy of the 1956 champion quartet the Confederates, who introduced jazzy rhythms and arrangements into barbershop harmony, the Dealer's Choice went on to codify the science of barbershop singing and usher the era of technique singing. I was most fortunate to be an active member of our singing society in those days and to have known the DC intimately.

This tribute was something Grady Kerr and I put together to celebrate the DC's 10th anniversary. Grady would come to my studio at WFAA-TV (ABC) in Dallas after hours and we would work on it. He would provide the copy and I narrated and assembled the audio. As a new Barbershopper back then, this was wonderful experience to learn about the quartet. Over the years I have become friends with all 4 of them and Bill Thornton and I have a celebratory birthday lunch each year. We were both born on April 20th..

I love the Gentlemen’s Agreement (clearly among the all-time great quartets), but how in the HELL did the Sundowners not win in ‘71? The tag at 26:52 is RIDICULOUS, especially for that era of barbershop. Were they just way ahead of their time? You can just hear the audience lose their minds at that stellar final chord (27:10) - I think I heard at least two overtones too! 🤯

It's great that we are recovering these. I remember our chapter would rent out these videos each year for part of our programming. Loved them! There used to be designed for radio shows that Hugh Ingraham narrated - I think they were just 15 minutes long. They would have some sort of theme (Dads, Moms, Heart, Love, Parades, etc.) with 4 songs or so.
