WWG Lesson 1 My First Pair of Cultural Glasses
My life changed in the back of a taxi in Taipei, Taiwan. That is the opening line. This is the first lesson from my Wearing Western Glasses course for international students and migrants to the West. There are 36 lessons averaging 5-6 minutes long.
There is no other course like WWG. Most cross-culture training I've seen rely on bullets lists, sometime with a few sentences of description. These lists tell you what to do. I believe you don't learn from bullet lists, you memorize them. You learn from interesting (sometimes funny) stories with a point and examples that viewers can relate to. That is my teaching method. I'm a story teller.
Being told to change won't make you change, especially in attitudes, habits and beliefs that have been part of your cultures for hundreds of years, or millennia. Much of what you're told to do are things you were taught were wrong, bad, impolite or incorrect. Doing wrong things on purpose is hard. You need a reason why you should change. That reason comes from understanding Western thinking, understanding why these "wrong" things are "right" to Westerners.
The course is called Wearing Western Glasses because after you've finished it you will be able to "see" as Westerners do, things like communication, achievment, face, respect, building relationships, and so much more. And you'll know why Westerners think and act as they do. This is the key to adapting to a new culture, knowing what they thinkm and why.
In this lesson you learn how I became interested in cross culture so much that it became my career. I've been in the cross culture business since 1987. Taught on 4 continents, advised government and wrote, Wearing Chinese Glasses.

มุมมอง 628 วันที่ผ่านมา
This is a lesson from my Wearing Western Glasses course for international students and migrants to the West. In this lesson you learn what Westerners tend to think of achievement and failure. Cross-culture misunderstandings cause more problems for international students than any other issue, including poor language skills. Teacher's Questions Embarrass Me
มุมมอง 522 ปีที่แล้ว
Many international students are not prepared to answer the kinds of questions Western teachers and professors ask. The students are used to questions that involve memorizing the answer, teachers ask questions that have no clear answer. These are called "why" questions. Students have to think and build a logical argument to answer. Teachers don't try to embarrass students; they ask "why" questio...

      Years ago in the old HK airport horseshoe bar a US oilman told me, We aren't born with logic, we have to learn it. And it's hard. I think both are true. Making choices teaches you to use logical thinking. That's good, but not nearly enough. I call these people self-taught thinkers. I call what people need to respect the quality of information and understand the nature of proof. I've taught argument logic since 1987. Still my favourite class to teach. You see people change right in front of you.

      Thanks for the question, and your interest. I haven't really looked at a logic book for many years, 30? Once you learn to think logically you never forget it; it just gets better. A good place to start is Logical Self Defense. I recommend this because it is written for people, not logic students. I recommend "The Little Blue Reasoning Book." Both on Amazon. I think my Why Thinking Matters master course, or my Thinking Logically course (part of the 4-course Success in Western Schools program) would work for you. It's not all ready yet, but I'm working hard and it won't be long. If interested go to eastmeetswestacademy.ca. SEnd me an email. Happy New Year, 2:05 away.

      Thank you for your kind words Jenalyn. My upcoming online course, Why Thinking Matters, will help people learn to think logically and teach many useful techniques from my consulting days. The bad news is it is never easy and there is no guaranteed success. Improving thinking skills improves your chances of making the best decision possible, solving the problem and creating a workable plan, but you never always win and we all make mistakes. And struggle. Sigh. You are never too late to learn and to improve.

    This is formal logic, with a hint of informal logic. The conundrum is that this leads to propaganda. What if the analysis is based on info completely wrong because of non-personal bias? For example Christopher is the best Christian that ever lived. Most Seventh Day Adventist believe and teach this... I can also defend my opinion, but how do I analyze better?

    • @crossculturesolutions
      @crossculturesolutions 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thinking logically is a tool, a skill that can be used for good or for evil. It can lead to, as you say, propaganda. Untruths. Lies. The better your skill the better lies you can tell. My belief has always been the better your skill the better you are at identifying and defeating propaganda. Then add all the other benefits of thinking logically, better decisions, solving problems, career advancement; it is a long list. In your 7th Day example there is more than analysis used to make and defend that opinion about Christopher. There is faith, beliefs used as facts. The irony is that logic can expose propaganda but believers don't use logic so they can't defeat it.

    • @PaulHolness
      @PaulHolness 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@crossculturesolutions Thanks! Then it becomes a matter of trust...? Don't trust anyone. The belief that Christopher Columbus is the greatest Christian lends credence... Without proper 'non' bias analysis any conclusion can be defeated. How do we go through life not trusting? I can't seem to get over the fact that you can't trust the facts without proper analysis: Flat Earth vs Helio. I agree, Logic will work in any case,... but I'm a sucker for the love of the truth. I am just trying trod this road of identification
