This song was originally called, “Hey, What’s Goin On?” but Marvin Gaye and 4 Non-Blonds kind of took those titles….
As the song changed over the years, it made more sense to call it, “Hopes Not Gone.”
I began writing this song when I (Jim) was just out of high school. Back in the early 80’s. It only took 40 years to complete it and finally record it with our band, Broken Daisies.
The inspiration is from working with teenagers in many capacities, a volunteer, a pastor, and a counselor. As time passed, new experiences in my life impacted the song.
20 years ago I vividly remember one day stopping at convenient food mart and there was a young girl making a call at a payphone outside who was visibly upset and didn’t look well. I considered offering help and decided I not to. When I came out of the store she was gone.
Over the years every time I drove by that foodmart I would think of and pray for her. The payphone is no longer there.
That young girl represents so many struggling young people throughout the world.
I wrote this song as a message to her and each of us to hold on and to know that hopes not gone.
