Mark Knopfler - Old Pigweed, live in Norway, Nov. 2 2002
I've had this album for years but discovered this gem, the last track on "The Ragpicker's Dream", when I played the entire album last weekend. He hasn't played it live too many times. Lyrics below:
Everything was in there
That you'd want to see
Corned beef and onions
And true love
Turnips and tinned tomatoes
Parsnips and a few potatoes
A couple extra blessings
From above
Now this here mingle-mangle
Was my best one yet
A big old bad goulash
Worth waiting for
And i'm just about to dip my can
Taste some brotherhood of man
When I get a feeling
That there's a flaw
Who put old pigweed
In the mulligan
Was it you
Who put old pigweed
In the mulligan stew
I close my eyes
For just a minute
What do you do
Who put old pigweed
In the mulligan stew
You won't find self-improvement or philosophy
In a dumpster sitting by
The kitchen door
There's plenty leek and humble pie
Ain't too much ham on rye
Sometimes I wonder
What i'm looking for
But a spoonful of forgiveness
Goes a long, long way
And we all should do our best
To get along
Add a pinch of kindness crumbling
To your loving dumpling
Okra for thickening
When something's wrong
But who put old pigweed
In the mulligan
Was it you
Who put old pigweed
In the mulligan stew
I close my eyes
For just a minute
What do you do
Who put old pigweed
In the mulligan stew
Everything was in there
That you'd want to see
Corned beef and onions
And true love
Turnips and tinned tomatoes
Parsnips and a few potatoes
A couple extra blessings
From above
Now this here mingle-mangle
Was my best one yet
A big old bad goulash

And i'm just about to dip my can
Taste some brotherhood of man
When I get a feeling
That there's a flaw
Who put old pigweed
In the mulligan
Was it you
Who put old pigweed
In the mulligan stew

Live at the O2 Arena. A basic digital camera hence sound and video quality is so-so.
Who did the subs for this?......horrific
Rewelacja. Jak zawsze pięknie. Kocham wszystkie utwory Marka K.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😂❤
probably from Først og Sist ;D Norways biggest Late Night Talkshow at the time.
Thank Mark I love you ❤❤
This is NOT live
Այսքան գեղեցիկ երգ ու այսքան համեստ եվ հասարակ ԵՐԳԻՉ
This should be the beautiful soundtrack for peace in the world 2023
Knopfler for President/2024
You the man
👑
🐸
I am always envious of any musician good enough to play with him.
🌹🎶🎼🎸🎶🎶🥁🎼🎶👍👏👏👏👏👏💞
Simply brilliant! Such a harmonious sound…Mark is the greatest guitarist ever!!!!
La chanson me ressuscite de bons souvenirs...
Only Knopfler could create this. So unique.
Top
such a great song! and so underrated!
Great song
totul la superlativ ... si compozitia ... si vocea ... ooau inima mea ... ce revelatie
i love this song! thanks!
This amazingly beautiful ballard is like a parable..... I could listen and listen forever to this simple and eery tune! It sits deep in your heart....Thank you Mark! You are a very gifted song writer!
All Mark’s songs sit deep in the heart
I agree
All of Mark’s songs could inspire epic movies
Was that you?
thanks mark knopfler for songs of such ...
yes , this one is a gem.
Hey, Class, just class, big time! Its about life, not stew!!! Listen again!
Thanks Knopf, love this song and everything else you create, you're a true genius
Isn't it just typical. There you are in the kitchen working your fingers to the bone, you turn your back for one minute and someone tries the Old Pigweed trick yet again! It's just so immature and - well - JUST GROW UP!!
Who put old pigweed in the dislike column?
Say what ???!!!??? Houston, we have a problem
Was it you?
I love this song!
lol That happens to me all the time.
It is a playbak indeed. Only Mark's guitar and vocals are live. The outro gives it out. Still great though.
How ignorant do you have to be? These men are artists, they don't fuck around with playback. The outro is perfectly fine they just didn't show Knopflers guitar as he played it...
You clearly know nothing about Mark. He isn’t one to fudge a live performance. The man is dedicated to his music, the song and it’s rendition is paramount to him. Playback…seriously?
Fantastic song
Absolutely positively. This mulligan stew is what made Mark the master
of course it ain't f***** playback..!!! i still wonder how how do you guys keep up that sound with him..!! Absolutely Amazing...
I said "word" for a joke but even so , still look like a tosser for using it... never again w...!
It's not playback.. word!
Love this song... love the album. every song.
m k mellows out with class
Yeah me too ! Think it's because of the guitars, it's quite the same "sound". And the rythmic looks like I'm no Superman too..
I don't know why, but everytime i hear this song, (which is a LOT) I think of "I'm no superman" by Lazlo Bane, also known as the theme from "Scrubs" Great piece of music
Incredible... didn't I tell ya Lou?
Damn. Just heard this on Pandora and almost cried. Such a beautiful song. Makes me think of a mothers forgiveness....
it is a gem indeed
"A spoonfull of forgiveness goes a long, long way" Indeed.
@wallstreetmaestro It's just your opinion that this is awful. For me and many it's a very nice song. And of course Mark must play the new songs, not just the classics. He doesn't depend on them, not like many other artists
"Add a pinch of kindness crumbling To your loving DUBLIN!!" it always sounds like that XD
@irelandcallforever they do have something "more" , but you can always find that in knopfler songs..... still, it's knopfler's signature, great stuff
The best song from his best album. Thanks!
But a spoonful of forgiveness Goes a long, long way And we all should do our best To get along Add a pinch of kindness crumbling To your loving dumpling words to live by! Love it!! Thank you for posting this...
This is such a cool song. I don't have all Mark's cd's and none of the dvd's, but I am finding so many very, very great songs that I never knew existed. What a mind this guy has to write all these!!
Awe, Old Pigweed. Nice!
