Folk Blokes Go Viral (Pilot)
A skype call between Joe and Mike to give you the lowdown on our lockdowns, and a bit of pondering about how we might get the Folk Show itself working on TH-cam what with the copyright balrogs running riot on people's content.
We're calling on folk, roots and acoustic artists (both veterans of our show and newcomers) to issue forth anything they'd like us to include in the Folk Show, so we can help cajole people into supporting you through this rather inconvenient and deadly time.

Just been to Whitby Folk Week and then celebrated the Hull Folk and Maritime Festival. The Waterson legend is still burning brightly at both and long may it do so.

The beauty of this makes me cry every time I hear it, and of course it's amazing how great Norma Waterson's voice was even after age 70. Thank you, Folk Blokes, so very much. (Listening from the US, about 45 mi. from Washington, DC.) ETA: I was looking for anything from the Bright Phoebus tour bc of "Norma Waterson remembered by Richard Hawley" (The Observer/The Guardian, 10 Dec 22) -- I recommend it to anyone who listens to this.

Just been catching up with old episodes of BBC Radio 4's "Last Word" and the interview with Martin and Eliza paints a wonderful picture of her and the Watersons: the ethos of "sing in unison until you can't, and then sing a harnony", Lal's very unexpected (and inspired) harmonies and Eliza's description of Mike's voice as "like a sheep on heat". Who are the various band members? I recognise Martin Carthy on acoustic guitar, then Norma Waterston (his wife) and Mike Waterston, and Eliza Carthy (Martin and Norma's daughter) second from right, but who are the other people? Are they also part of the family - eg's Lal's children and their partners?
You can ID a few of them from a pic in "Norma Waterson remembered by Richard Hawley" (The Observer/The Guardian, 10 Dec 22) -- not the same performance, but some of the women are identifiable nonetheless. @@EllieWaterson Thanks for IDing everyone. Cracking solo from Oliver. I first heard of the Watersons when I saw the Play for Today "Land of Green Ginger" in which they sang the wonderfully haunting song "A North Country Maid" in the title sequence and then sang in a pub in Hull that the main characters (played by Gwen Taylor and John Flanagan) visited. Interesting that the play, made in 1973, refers to the contruction of the Humber Bridge which we now regard as an essential link - having to get a ferry or divert via Goole seems unthinkable.

Mate, it introduced us to so many as well... we did not go into it as genre experts, and were often delighted and surprised by what we found.
John Dickinson of the Valley Folk was a friend of The Watersons especially Norma and Lal ,John sadly died 2 years ago.They once sang together often in Hull and Bury folk clubs. Brilliant. Thanks Folk Blokes. Went to the show at Celtic Connections in January and was blown away by the band . Martin Carthy, Eliza Carthy and lots of other really accomplished musicians. The sound was amazing.
