Rita Strohl (1865-1941) studied piano and solfège at the Paris Conservatoire at the age of 13. Widely acclaimed as an important musical figure, she was a member of the Société des Auteurs, Compositeurs, et Éditeurs de Musique (SACEM). Her music is grandiose, highly expansive, and characterized by her fascination with the mythic past, woven into fin-de-siècle musical sentiment.
Her Sonate dramatique also drew inspiration from the mythic story of Titus and Bérénice, based on quotations from Racine’s tragedy Bérénice (1670). The first movement is full of passionate melodies, with cello singing in a wide range of registers. The second movement shows a reminiscence of the Mendelssohn Scherzo. With the cello declaiming a recitative in the beginning, the third movement is a soulful lament rendered by expressive chromaticism. In the finale, the dramatic energy is fully unleashed as the cello cries out the emotionally charged sweeping lines.
