Yep, I use to write out a list just like that before I had a sat nav ... but mine was in much bigger writing and I use to sellotape it to the dash.
@@joline2730 Yeah, I'm still a bit old school and use a road map book most of the time
NO WAY you are 40 years old sir.
@MaureenFinn-r7e I agree, this was during my time in London as the title says 40 to 61, I'm now 61
@@Old-Man-Buzing-Along Yes sorry, I realised my mistake later.
Nice one brother, interesting. You talk about how materialism works, and you're bang on. What makes us all whole and happy is a solid family. Without that, we're incomplete, and become consumers. By design, for sure. No money in happy families that need nothing. God speed on your journey friend 👍🙏
@@tkilla1202 Thanks for watching and your comments. Its unfortunate but in todays world money is still king. The old world barter system was better
40 years old? Did i hear that right.
@@MV12379 Yeah. I was 40 years old to 50 living in London
no thanks to london
@puppets.and.muppets Thanks for checking me out. And yeah London is not for everyone
@@Old-Man-Buzing-Along it doesnt function.
I wouldn't live there now, but it was absolutely banging in the 80s and 90s
Ok
Hi, great video. Did you rekindle your relationship with your daughter?
@@samsdadalways888 Thanks for watching. Yes having the truck meant I could drive North to see her on a regular basis
Why do you have two taps ❓️ One car park is as good as another ... and at least it's dry ... Stay safe 👍
@@joline2730 The parkup was a last minute solution, unfortunately the Tesco was 24 hrs with a 24hr gym next to me. The small tap supplies cold filtered drinking water the other is hot/cold and used for washing up etc
The peaks and troughs of life Neil.. Nobody could accuse you of sitting on the side-lines and watching life pass you by .. Looking forward to your thoughts on the next phase of your journey.
@@pda49184 Thanks for watching again. Next up is my cycle adventure
A great life . . . with the normal work progression, and fiasco of changing employers and enviroments ... and Debt 😢 Did you pay off the car loan and/or sell it ❓️ and what about the credit card debt ❓️ Anyway, can't wait to see where you go when you 'got on yer bike' 🚲
@joline2730 Hi there again, thanks for coming back. Yes paid off the debts with money left over for my adventure and traded the truck for a Ford Probe and cashback
And thank you to you, Sir. Glad to know you're truly one of us with the old debt. What a pantomime that was. I'm sure loads of us look back and think, what the eff were we thinking.
@grahamstewart615 Buying the truck was my biggest mistake, the debt hung around my neck for ages
Did you ever use the city of Quebec pub ?
@robertjsmith No and I have not heard of it
I parked behind a church building but still rough, stay safe vanlife
@@philmorris949 I was going to park on a nearby industrial park but the spots were already taken
Please don't park near any BIG trees. Best to be in town next to a solid building. Take care. Stay Safe 🙏👌
@@joline2730 Yea I only parked there because the trees are narrow and not very tall but still able to restrict the wind to some degree
Getting closer to van life caught my attention, looking forward to hearing about your van life vision
I will get to van life eventually. Just a couple more chapters about my life leading up to it
I think it’s brave people leaving home, going to London.

Very interesting as per. I visited London recently. The gap between Greater London and the rest of this island is beyond explanation. London might as well be New York or LA. A massive jump for you or anyone else that doesn't have family there in the first instance. Imagine arriving today and trying to find accommodation with limited funds. Looking forward to the next episode. Respect to you, Sir.
Thanks I glad you found it interesting and I agree moving to London nowadays would be a lot harder. More of my life and some surprising things to come.
Thanks for watching again. Part 2 will contain some more changes and some surprising adventures
Really very interesting Neil.. You're recollections and the diversity of your employment history really hold my attention. Your ability to adapt and move on is a great example of flexibility and seizing the moment when you identified opportunities and grabbed them in order to improve your standard of living . Looking forward to part two of chapter three.
Two days work and five days off is pretty good odds . . . It pays the bills (or most of 'em😊). Don't work too hard ... enjoy your brekkie 👌
@@joline2730 Yes it's good but every week i still have to return on Fri night
@Old-Man-Buzing-Along I know the feeling, drags you in, and ties you down. Can't wait to find out what you get up to those other five days ‼️😁
Great video neil keep them coming 👍

How many years in a van? Yet you are a great storyteller - aren’t you going to write a book?
Thanks for the feedback. Not that long living in a van and will get to that point over the next few chapters. Always thought about writing a book
Ending up with a life in Blackpool is probably one of the worst hands you can be played in the UK. Not everybody fails of course but if your just a simple, unassuming hard working person like alot of people, the prognosis is often quite deflating, even if you've managed to somehow engineer a few life events and experiences along the way

Glad the whole work thing is behind me now. That depressed me seeing that. Too many 4.30 am starts on a winters day. 😂
Lovely part of the world.
@@grahamstewart615 I agree Yorkshire has some really stunning areas
Surprise how big an audience there is out for this in say, men aged over 55 in the Western World. I was brought here via watching a New Yorker man in a van story. Thinking back to the pandemic and me ending up in homeless unit in Scotland age 60. Talk about a shock to the system. Yet three plus years later I'm better off than ever. Look forward to more of your story. Respect to you, Sir.
@@grahamstewart615 Thanks for watching and your comments. Quite a bit more to come
You've achieved getting to 61. Plenty of so called high achievers i knew never made it to 61. Owning houses or cars isn't everything. I owned a business. In the end it meant absolutely zero. Respect.

I'm into politics, computer stuff and electronic music and the algorithm put you into my feed, how weird! Still, enjoyed it buddy - in a sort of melancholic way. I'm pretty sure all of us have big portions of regret and remorse when we reflect back. As we get older and the time in front is less than the time behind we understand we can't fix stuff we thought we had enough time to do and we're left with all we are. Take solace that you're not alone we all share similar feelings, some less some more. For the next instalment I'm going to settle back with a dark northern pint and put more logs on the fire. Thanks for your thoughts, it makes some of us realise the similarities between us and that helps. A new sub.
@@driftwood9421 Thanks for viewing. There will be a few more chapters before I get to why I'm living in a van
I was wondering why this came up on the algorithm for me too. I have a van, done a bit of travel in it, but I have been looking into creating my own electronic music too. Weird.
Looks nice and peaceful

If nothing else Neil, your story illustrates a determination to improve your situation and consequently, your earnings and ability to fulfil the things that were important to you in this period of your life. Nobody could ever accuse you of being a quitter or not taking responsibility for yourself.
Thanks for the positive comments
My dear mate. 77 here - and I'm just taking off, with nothing more than my old age pension, to the far east where it's cheaper to live and where I quite expect to die...If I stay here it won't prolong my life one minute more. As long as you're living, life is for living. Don't let it get to you. None of us can beat death. Think out of the box you seem to have fallen into. Good luck mate.

I found this very interesting. I lthink there are lots of ppl who look back at certain turning points and wonder what would have happened IF ... ... My parents moved out of inner London to Essex when I was 15, and of course, my life changed. Not necessarily for the better, but hey ho. I am VERY glad you got out of the drug route and found a job ... who knows where that may have led, but I believe your Army time probably saved you from that, cos you had learned a bit of discipline, and those boisterous Rockers actually saved you ‼️ I was a Rocker 💯 Good times. Looking forward to the next chapter . . .
