Today we're learning about colors in a simple way.
Many artists start by reading the color wheel and learning theories to create strong color combinations. But today, we're sticking to just one color!
I'll show you how a painting with the right shades can look great, even without complex color theory.
This is perfect for beginners who want to gain confidence and start using color effectively in their concept art or illustration.
Once you're ready, you can explore more complex ideas.

Thank you, this is an encouraging idea! I'm trying to find ways to reduce the mental friction I deal with in just trying to START. This helps. 😊
@@CalmCopy471 I'm so glad! One huge tip I've learned from going at this on my own and helping others is that mastery begins with one thing at a time. Avoid the shotgun approach.
just discovered this channel, its been a gold mine. keep up the great work man :)
Ayyyye! Thanks Marcus! I'm so happy you're getting value!
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for stopping by ;)
Thank you so much for these words, give me hope. I think I can push a little longer now
You're more than welcome! Remember: Every single artist is unique, there are no two alike! :)
Where did he go to school? (i don't have time to watch the whole thing)
How the fk this channel only has 1K and about 300 views on the videos, it's pure dope man !
Thank you so much for the kind words! Small channel exposure and well... I'm improving the content all the time. Always lots to learn!
great interview. I think it's sad how people are expected to uproute their lives for a job - so much work can be completed remotely, it seems senseless. Plus, it kind of forces you to be a part of the work culture 24/7 and then just obsorbs everything you are 0_0 - very intense!
I guess that's largely true. I find the best time to do it - if ever - is when you're young and less settled. It definitely takes the kind of person who isn't afraid of massive change and who is willing to make that specific sacrifice. Thanks for stopping by Karlee! :)
@@1on1artschool Yeah :/ My home and my family mean a lot, and I'm sure they do to lot of poeple - those sorts of personal supports and structures should be in place particularly for younger people I feel, when beginning a career that intense. I'm so sure burn out would be a little less rampant if it wasnt so all encompassing. Thanks for commenting on my video too, that's very kind ^_^
@@KarleeHankin An interesting thought. It generally does take a remarkable support network to offer support. In the years I've been helping other artists I'd say I've seen a general improvement in this. The first few generations got it hardest but now we're in around 5th generation and people know more. Still far from ideal thouugh.
Amazing direct video on how to design from organic forms-do you have any tips on studying mechanical forms? Like did you also bring vehicles into pureref for reference or understand the general forms from experience of drawing them a billion times? Thank you so much!
Hey Kiara! Thanks for stopping by and leaving me such a lovely comment. Mechanical forms can only be faked for so long. Truly the best way to understand them is by studying industrial design drawing techniques and then later combining them with design. I have an entire 3 month module dedicated to this for my mentees for this very reason: it's just complex... until you get it! :) Hope that helps!
I was thinking about asking where I could get an intership at Atey's studio, and at the end of the video I went to see his work and was totally amazed, and then I found out his studio is Envar. Envar is just 2/3 years old?! wow they really did well
But of course, when you're doing a good thing and got the right people the rest is kinda to be expected! Thanks for stopping by!
I absolutely agree with what you said about communication. It's not something I'm great at, but I'm aiming to improve. It was really nice to hear, though. Great video, by the way-I’m learning a ton from your content! 👍
@@ItzMeCrispy Thank you so much! I feel like every day this belief only gets reinforced. We can all improve it, that's the beauty!

I don’t do digital art but thought this was quite informative. Subbed!
@@ShintogaDeathAngel You're a champ🏆 Thank you and I'll do my best to keep you informed!
Great Video! Maybe you could go into a little more detail in the design principles you're thinking of while designing. But I love the content, would be excited to see more like this! (Maybe Weapon designs etc.)
Thanks Sam, I'll keep that in mind for next time! :D
Great stuff
Thanks so much!
There's a lot of art advice on the internet, but it's weirdly rare to hear someone give it in a way where it's both not sugarcoated and isn't putting anyone down. Great video! Will have to check out more of your stuff :)
Hey, thank you so much, I really should do more of these type of videos I reckon! Thanks for stopping by! :)
I don't think censoring negativity is the way to go. I don't know about the game industry which I assume you work in but a lot of art related industries aren't that great and I think people should know that and then pursue art if the trade off is fine for them
@@osku388 100% agree about no censorship. People SHOULD speak freely, but at the same time I do think it's worth strong caveats and a balanced view.
Wish I knew this before, thank you for this, also seeing your design process makes me feel like designing my own characters now, great work!
@@nimbumamu1347 Thank you so much! Glad you got value out of it. Just get stuck in, character design is a skill on it's own :)
Hello please I’m interested on your mentorship art foundation 12 months long and premium 12 months mentorship, please please answer my email. It start with athdemar. Please and amazing video
hello! i love the subject and your advice. can you do a video about brainstorming and finding references for a task? since client give me very short brief and i have to do almost by myself, i find it very important. ty :)
Hey! Thank you so much and I'll do my best to make that happen but unlikely to happen very soon. Hang tight!
@@1on1artschool nice! cant wait!
@@1on1artschool ty for replying. do you recommend any community online for artists ?
@@RandomTourist-pf5zq Discord groups are the best atm because you can get feedback on your work and network with other upcoming artists and people in the industry. That being said, do take as many opportunities to go to conventions and meet real artists and even other aspiring artists, if anything, to check out their work and get inspired and know that you're on an epic journey with us all. 😃
Great video, A lot of good tips!
Damn, thanks foe going through the archive!
Was just having problems with this. amazing videos, thank you for your work!
Amazing! I'm so glad you got value from it!
this is so cool! I've been drawing for about 5 years now and still struggle with character development and process. this rly helped!
I'm so glad!! It really helps to take the pressure off the process early so we can be more confident as we go!
Cool stuff man!!! it's great to watch how the design evolve step by step.
Eeeeey, thank you man!
really good video. one question, where do you get your images from?
I would say 75% pinterest, and 25% a mix between pexels and google. It's a real skill to find the right images with the right appeal and lighting. Keep in mind this technique only works well for grounded projects. The moment you step into scifi you're in trouble and need other approaches. ;)
Glad to see you uploading so much more often recently.
Oh yeah and having a blast, thanks! Another tomorrow btw!
Nice tutorial dude, I was learn this work flow years ago and it really speed up my concept art process, I hope you'll get more view ASAP because this is high quality content ngl
Ah dude you're such a champ. Thanks!!
using a picture behind just to start a painted landscape is a really cool idea, really quickly establishes the atmospheric perspective
Wish I could claim it as my own idea but its a super fast way to establish your values. Just gotta be careful that the blur doesn't break the vibrancy of colors, it always needs a boost and most photos are mad dull compared to the paintings we need. Thanks for the comment!
😂😂s
Just found your series and I'm hooked man. Super well made and great art!
Thank you so much! I'll be back soon, busy planning the next videos.
@@1on1artschool can't wait!
This is so cool! Id love to see a video of it being coloured
hello sir this video is not on the playlist.
It is now, thanks for voicing your desire!
so grateful for the interview, loved Kung fu is dead’s teaser
Thanks for popping by! Keep an eye out for news about the project, I doubt it's the last we'll hear of it!
Thanks for sharing man, nice to see the whole process and how you search inside the shapes and then refine.
I love the way you describe that, I've never thought about it that way. Shapes are so important for all art!
Good to know that Rob is doing well. I came across Rob at an art exhibition once in Chiba. I was brown away by his style and loved it so much for years. and... believe it or not, I started on illustration as well! At that time, I had no idea that I will do that. Can't believe that he's in NZ now. One of my fav places to be. Great to hear about his journey to where he is now. Haha... plz don't say his old works are bad... Drawing skills are something you can improved on, and I would say that he has it cause his imagination is something else.
100% agree. Robs work is super creative that's what I love about him and anyone else brave enough to be different in a world where aspiring artists look to be like someone else instead of themselves.
Great character. Great story behind it. How long was the overall drawing process roughly? Very inspiring work!
Thank you so much! The entire process was around 5 hours. (Lemme know if you want my personal formula I worked out for how to calculate true work speed on something :) )
Very nice. I like how you mention the importance of values.
Of course... And how they can be used as a tool to reveal information in many ways!
@@1on1artschool It is often overlooked when one is used to draw only with outlines.
Underrated channel, needed this so much. TY!
Thank you so much! I wholly appreciate you taking the time!
One of my favorite and most inspiring artists. Thank you for interviewing Ilse! Immediately subbing and I can't wait to see this channel grow. :)
Thank you so much! I naturally agree, her art is so amazing!!
Love your videos, keep em coming!
I absolutely will 💯! Thank you!
Hi, I still fondly remembering you reaching out to me through ArtStation 3 years ago when I was in the midst of going to art school. I graduated and I founded a small art studio with another grad and now work mostly in the tabletop gaming industry. I still get a lot of value out of your videos ❤.
You total champ!! Keep working hard and you'll nail it!! 🤠💥
that's actually a nice perspective rather than blindly doing it just cause. which is what I ended up doing so much
Leaning into ideas and removing pressure is the exact aim of these practices. Thanks for popping by!
Omg, this looks amazing and super helpful. Looking forward to your drawing along videos or any related to art drawing tutorial content . Keep up the good work, mate.🤩
Thank you very much!! Keep an eye we are packing more each week.
This is exactly what I am looking for. I wish you could do several of these fantasy landscape videos and tutorials how things work. I need to learn this style of artistry to create my bookcovers.
I would really like to see more of these, and fantasy illustrations. I am learning quite alot from these. I am a writer and have been thinking about learning digital art to make my own illustrations for covers.
More on the way for sure. You're the third person I've chatted to who had this vision for their writing. There are so many creative people who want to express themselves this way. The world needs you.
Cool stuff man!!! great tips all around, Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks Diego! More to come!
Hey, i just wanna say that your work is amazing... subbed you ;)
Cheers! Thanks for helping the channel grow!
