Maple Leaf Rag Afterglow 2016
A couple years ago at the Friends of Scott Joplin's annual Ragtime Afterglow Party at the Scott Joplin House State Historic Site, , part of the festivities included a performance by five different pianists simultaneously playing Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag" on the two pianos in the New Rosebud Cafe. Well, this year we are up to seven. Marty Eggers, Virginia Tichenor and Carl Sonny Leland hold forth on the piano nearest the camera, while John Remmers, Nathan Beasley, John Reed-Torres and Christopher Parrish manage to squeeze together to play the piano on the opposite wall. High art? Well, maybe not, but certainly fun stuff!

Stars and Stripes Forever in Ragtime

Many early ragtime composers also composed marches, and, since they were one of the popular dance styles at the time, were often called on to play the popular marches of the day as well. Often they added their own embellishments to the score, as in Bert Franklin's player piano roll of this, perhaps the most popular of all American marches.

Nice! (I'd forgotten about the facial hair! haha)

How many people usually attend these events?
Thanks for being literally the only live version of this piece on youtube!
Most of it is too fast but it sure does show off this young mans talent.
Great, great rendition, Nathan! Great job!!
Nice sounding organ, quick reed response. Nice performance, John!!! :-)
John played this at one of his sets in Sutter Creek this past August. Elliott Adams and I had been standing there talking, and he paused and started listening in. He made the remark, "This sounds familiar...I think I have the original." I said, "No you don't." He asked how I knew what he did and didn't have, and I simply said, "Because he wrote it." That is the first time I ever heard a distinguished ragtime pianist drop an F-bomb.
+Ragtimer95 Ha, Elliot cusses all the time.
They all is simply PLUM LOCO! (AND, I love 'em all.)
So sorry we missed that show! Next time!
Hey B, I recognized that organ!! I just stumbled upon this. This is great!! You should have this guy do more with that organ. Thanks for posting this.
Great take on Ted Snyder's "Wild Cherries"!
thanks for uploading these!
I'm hearing "Buffalo Gals, won't you come out tonight?" -- right? Glad that Steve gets to play, as well as being the historian of the "Friends of Scott Joplin" organization, and the video archivist! Thanks for everything, Steve.
Glad to see these gentlemen having fun, in a location I've come to love. But I have to wonder: am I the only one who thinks an un-tuned piano isn't cute, even if that's what the early ragtime artists had to put up with? If you're taking up a collection to get a tuner in there, I'll send a check!
Lovely. He plays with verve.
