    Thank you so much for this video. Years ago I bought the Carawan’s 1968 book “Freedom is a Constant Struggle. Songs of the Freedom Movement“ which has the same cover photo as the one you showed and sang from. Another addition, I assume. I had not really read the book, stories and songs, until a week ago. I then went looking for a video to put life into the words because, even tho I have a 7 decade love affair with music, several shelves of music books and a son who plays horn in symphony orchestras, the lines and dots above the words are just…lines and dots. You folks singing let me hear these songs, let me better feel the stories with them, and enlarged a little more my understanding of the fear, the hardship and bravery people had, fears this old white guy on the Pacific Coast can’t really imagine. Once more, thank you. Bill

    Having played bluegrass music with some damn talented musicians, I learned a capo was used to allow open strings to ring, thus contributing to instrument sustain. It was not considered a "cheater" by bluegrass guitarists, who used a capo very often. Doc, Tony Rice and Norman Blake, three of the very best guitarists of their era, all used capos in their careers. The reason will become apparant by listening to the guitar and the sustain of the open strings during a lead break. I no longer play much guitar, but lean more on mandolin where a capo is not used. A mando has no need for one as a player has 4 fingers, a mando has 4 pairs of strings, and some shapes are repeats as one moves up the fret board for various keys.

    • @BlowingRockArtHistoryMuseum
      @BlowingRockArtHistoryMuseum ปีที่แล้ว

      Great point, I had not considered the value of the capo for letting the strings ring out. Thank you for watching and the thoughtful comment.

      The text was laid out with Adobe Illustrator. We sent the file to a local printing company, Creative Printing, and they were able to get us the print in a few days. We prefer to go local to keep the money in our community and because sometimes there can be issues with a letter or two, on their end or our end - it's easy to mess up.
