    I watched Le Mans '66 with my partner at the cinema, it was just us two in a 300 seat cinema, nobody else there. The cinema was The Odeon in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham. Ken Miles' home town. I found that very poignant.

    8:05 I agree. No movie or game will be historically accurate to the events of the story they tell. Ford v Ferrari is no exception. But we can all agree that the movie was great and was a great entry point to learning the Ford vs Ferrari rivalry of the 60s. It's just sad however that many will not bother learning the reality and the true history behind the film's events, which causes them to believe the movie is 100% accurate.

    "American muscle" and "Italian sophistication" were both passed and lapped by German engineering. The car that truly changed long distance racing was the 917, take your red white and blue glasses off.

    The car was basically a Lola (English) with a Ford engine (US). Lola doesn’t get the credit it deserves. Without Lola there would have been no Le Mans wins. It also has to be said vis versa. Together attained one of racings greatest achievements.

    The best version of this epic battle between Ford & Ferrari IMO is the book “Go Like Hell.” But, that’s my opinion and I AM a car guy….an old car guy who owned a 427 Ford in the 60’s while living in Florida. I had a 63 1/2 Ford Galaxie Fastback with a 427 and four-speed. Even at 78, I’m still a car guy with a 650hp ZL1 Camaro in my driveway alongside an ‘06 GTO. The book was better….covered a lot of missing details in the movie….but, I guess books are always, or seem to be always, better than the flick. It covers all the BS in the Ferrari stable, especially what they put Sir John Surtees through. Any car guys reading this old man’s rant should read the book and also Bob Lutz’s “Car Guys vs Beancounters.”

    Being a kiwi and one that is a huge history buff. I like to think Ken was told to slow so he did. He expected Bruce to cruise in beside him. But Bruce being a racer who wants to win just put the boot in at the last second..... We will never know for sure but that is how I choose to tell the story if anyone asks.

    The claim that Ford won Lemans 3 additional times is not entirely accurate. Ford won the 1967 race with the Ford MKIV with Dan Gurney and A J Foyt driving. But in 1968 & 1969 John Wyer Racing won Lemans in heavily modified GT40's called Gulf-Wyers (hence the famous blue & orange colors) after Ford officially dropped out of running Lemans after 1967.

    Shorly regardless of ford fiddling the results the fact that it was decided someone starting further down the grid has covered more ground is wrong. Your race only starts when you cross the start line . The same as when you finish .

    7:33 _“And that was the McLaren/Amon car, which started _*_well behind_*_ the Miles/Hulme machine.”_ but then you show a photo of the cars lined up at the start, with the #2 car (McLaren/Amon) just 2 spots behind the #1 car (Miles/Hulme)- to “well behind”, since it's just two positions back (so “barely behind” would be accurate). It's true that the #1 car got moving a bit later than many other cars, but that's not relevant here, since the position is judged by distance, not start time. Put another way- if Miles had crossed the finish line just 2 car lengths ahead of the #2 GT40, he would've gotten first by all accounts. Ford could've still gotten their photo finish and he would be #1 if he punched it in the last 10 seconds up to the line.

    • @Docv400
      @Docv400 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Did you miss the part where Miles had to pit to get his door sorted out? He lost laps doing that. Seems a lot of people don't understand that the number of laps done is what determines the Winner. It's a 24hr Endurance race, not a 20-lap sprint, it involves many many pitstops for driver changes, fuel, mechanical repairs etc. When the 24hrs is up, the winner is the one that's done the most laps. It doesn't matter who crosses the line first, unless the other cars on the same lap have done the same number of laps.

  • @Triboro100
    @Triboro100 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    What I never understood about the finish was that Track officials and historians always mention Miles was up 2 laps over McLaren, so really Miles covered more ground than McLaren regardless of him starting behind Miles. Miles was cheated out of the triple crown

    Duct taping the rear bodywork in place . . . The yellow MkIV (Mark Donahue) lost it's rear bodywork. He managed to prop it onto the car and limp back to the pits where it was duct taped in place. As a precaution the bodywork on the Gurney/Foyt car also received the duct tape treatment.
