Is Paint Enough? – Lönnrotinkatu POV Bike Ride || Here in Helsinki
A one-way bike lane was implemented on Lönnrotinkatu in Helsinki in May 2023. The experiment, lasting until the end of 2024, is part of an effort to improve walking and cycling conditions in Helsinki’s city center and find solutions for future projects.
To accommodate these changes, the roadway on Lönnrotinkatu was narrowed to a single lane for cars between Mannerheimintie and Abrahaminkatu. The bike lane, primarily marked with paint, removed a few resident parking spaces as well as 65 parking spots available in the evenings and nights. It will be interesting to see which lessons from this experiment are adopted elsewhere in the city and what the future holds for this street. What do you think - has the experiment been well executed?

    I usually choose the path that Google maps or Komoot recommend. The problem is that these apps are not aware of which path is nicer and often give bad directions for cyclists. I have been searching for alternative apps that give more appropriate cycling directions, but have so far been unable to. Maybe the HSL app should have a dedicated cycling directions feature with the cycle paths reccomended by the city planners. Otherwise I might never find these nice cycle paths.

      8:25 is next to a large park, a large artery road, a smaller artery road that stems from it and then there's obviously walking and cycling paths through the park because dense centres are nearby. Don't forget that snow requires a lot more space for snow management, so things cannot be packed too close together.

  • @markuserikssen
    @markuserikssen 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Paint is a good start but not enough. There should at least be a clear separation between car lanes and bike lanes, for example by using poles (as shown at 1:20) or a clear border. Cars parked next to bike lanes also can cause dangerous situations. The situation at 2:30 looks ridiculous, to be honest. This zigzagging makes it confusing and unsafe. Cars shouldn't be allowed to block bike lanes either, which happened on several places in this video. I know we Dutchies are spoiled with our infrastructure, but it's far from perfect here either. Helsinki seems to be making progress, but it needs to do more to take it to a higher level. Helsinki has a lot of potential: there is space, it's relatively flat, it's rather compact, it's quiet, many roads are quiet.

    • @NeonNion
      @NeonNion 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Absolutely! Helsinki could be an awesome city to live and to be if it embraced human centric streets over car sewer streets. The city has that feeling you get from great cities, which in this case mainly stems from beautiful and varied architecture and land planning, but the streets are mostly god awful. On top of that, Helsinki city center gets hot as heck during summer time all thanks to no trees and asphalt. Check out Rue du 22 Novembre Street in Strasburg. It went through a fantastic transformation from a car sewer to a lively street, and I loved being there every second. Google street view may still show how it looked before the transformation, but I couldn't find any points anymore when I tried around a week ago.

    Doesn't overtaking cars defeat the whole purpose? Every street would work like this if bikers decided to occupy the space one day.

    • @intervrt
      @intervrt 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If bikers highly outnumber motor traffic and car through traffic is blocked/discouraged, then that's basically what a bicycle street is. For high bicycle numbers it also should be a connection between important places, not just any random street. But I think it's illegal for cars to overtake bikes on bicycle streets in Finland anyway so maybe that's an issue

  • @jattikuukunen
    @jattikuukunen 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

    0:54 that pedestrian crossing sign is in a quite hazardous place in the middle of the street. It was put there so that it won't block the traffic light. But why does it need to be on the bike path? Why not on the side of the car lane? There are three lanes for cars here versus one for bikes.

    This is very close to the ugliest park in the World (Töölönlahden puisto). Basically just a muddy, barren field in the middle of the city where you have pretty much the highest land value. Finland doesn't really have any cities. Everything is separated from absolutely everything else. Commie blocks separated by trees, trees and more ugly trees and different neighbourhoods have to be separated from each other as well, of course.

    • @jattikuukunen
      @jattikuukunen 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Crossing the street isn't that bad relatively speaking, as long as you don't need to cross it twice. It's just another red light, of which you will face many even if you're just going straight. These are one way bike paths. The people biking against the camera are breaking the rules. I'm not sure how intentionally. Probably either because they don't know the rule or it feels too cumbersome.

    • @banaana1234
      @banaana1234 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

    • @jattikuukunen
      @jattikuukunen 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@banaana1234it's a single pedestrian crossing over the street, not any more difficult than if you came by bus and walked over the street. And the red light matters relatively little there, because you can start preparing for parking your bike while you're waiting. There are a lot of pedestrians in that crossing, which makes it a bit cramped. I can give you that. I'm also not sure there's a need for that many car lanes since they're so empty. Maybe at peak hour there's use for more than one lane. At least there's room for bike and pedestrian path widening in the future.

  • @markuserikssen

    Looks quite neat, I must say. Based on the bike/electric scooter traffic volume, the bike lanes seem a bit narrow at some points, especially near the bridge. Also a missed opportunity to give bike paths a distinct color, like the red asphalt used in The Netherlands or the blue ones used in Denmark. The crossing in the beginning could use a bike/pedestrian tunnel or bridge, to make the traffic flow better for everyone. It's also better for safety reasons. Anyhow, keep up the good work Helsinki!

    • @hereinhelsinki
      @hereinhelsinki 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Markus! The wider side of the bridge is paved in red asphalt since it is part of the Baana network. Interestingly this "Itäbaana" was originally going to switch sides under the bridge, but due to safety concerns this plan was scrapped and it will instead cross at level with the light rail and car traffic. You can actually see the future Baana route just after the rails. We shall see how people choose the recommended route (with bike-friendly light cycle🤞) vs. the zigzag shortcut under the bridge. With all the curbs and blind spots it could become even more dangerous than the original plan. 🤷
