Music of the Ainur for flute choir by Erika Skye Andres
Music of the Ainur from "The Silmarillion" for flute choir by Erika Skye Andres, recorded by the Savannah Area Flute Association flute choir in the fall of 2024.
“The Silmarillion” is a book by J.R.R. Tolkien, the author of “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings”. It provides the backstory for these other books, describing much of the history and mythology of Middle Earth.
The beginning section of “The Silmarillion” is “The Ainulindalë” which describes the creation of Tolkien’s universe. It starts with the chapter called “The Music of the Ainur”. In the beginning is Ilúvatar (here represented by the bass flute) who is the One, the creator. The first beings he thought up were the Ainur (the rest of the flutes) who helped him with the creation of the world. They spoke to each other and created through music. At first they sang alone, but then Ilúvatar declared the first theme and the Ainur began to sing together in harmony.
However, soon Melkor (piccolo), the greatest in power and knowledge of the Ainur, wanted to create things of his own. His thoughts caused discord among the Ainur and their music faltered. But Ilúvatar just amended the theme to fit Melkor’s music. Then Melkor intervened again and Ilúvatar created a brand new theme, this one beautiful and much more sorrowful. And again Melkor tries to add his own music, but he begins to struggle to get it to contrast with the second theme as his thoughts almost seem to just enhance the music.
Finally, Ilúvatar stops the music with a tremendous chord. He then reveals that all of Melkor’s efforts have actually only contributed to make the music and its creations even more beautiful, for example creating clouds and snow from where just plain water existed before. All of the themes work together to make glorious music.
I wrote this piece because of the power of the story to show through music that all of the “bad” things in our lives can actually bring about good and from contrasts can come unity.

Quick Flute Care Tip That Will Greatly Improve Your Sound!
Hehe I love the flute hat! nice job!
😁 Thank you!! Marion Garver hand makes all kinds of hats for low flutes (including bass 😊) as well as regular concert flutes. They are really fun!
Great fun 🙂
Thank you for this comparison. Do you have a penny whistle recommendation? Trying to decide between a piccolo and penny whistle. I play the concert flute
Sure thing! I played an Abell whistle in this recording, my main nice whistle. I love the sound since it is made out of wood. If you can get a whistle, I think it is fabulous! But I do also want to mention that if you are a concert flute player and you play in a band or orchestra or play any kind of classical music, then flute players have to double on piccolo a lot so it might be worth getting first (and you could always still get a cheap metal whistle to play around with until you can get a nice one in the meantime). If you are just playing Irish music though, then getting the whistle first would be great. Best of luck and enjoy!
@@erikaskyeandres thank you for your feedback~ It is just for home use to play hymns. Last 2 questions, is the fingering on the pennywhistle the same as the flute? And what brand piccolo are you playing here? I will look into your other videos also Thank you!
@@wilshawlynnstevens2980 No problem! I play a Hammig 650/2 piccolo. It is a professional model, but I fortunately got a good deal for it several years ago as it was lightly used. I LOVE the sound of this piccolo, it is just so much darker than most piccolos, such a beautiful tone. Although if I were to get one today, I think I would get the 650/3 if possible (it has a special way to play high G#) but overall I am very happy with it. As far as the pennywhistle goes, the fingering is similar but not exactly the same. It is based in the key of D so with all 6 holes covered it makes D, then if you lift your last finger it is E, then with 4 holes covered it is F SHARP not natural, then 3 is G, 2 is A, and 1 is B like you would expect, and no fingers is C sharp. for anything outside D major, you have to either half hole or use what are known as cross fingerings which are all different than the flute. Not too hard to get used to though I think and worth it because while it depends on the instrument, many other world and simple system flutes have similar fingering systems to the Irish whistle. So it makes learning many other flutes easier if you already know the fingerings for the Irish whistle.
Thank you so much! I knew how to fix the springs, but never realized about the rods. Much better now.
No problem, glad to help! My little screwdriver has allowed me to save myself many trips to the repair shop and hope it now does for you too! ☺
Is it concert/normal flute fingerings or is it an entire new system(like how piccolo has the same fingerings)
You can mostly use the same concert flute fingerings, but I use a few alternate ones for tuning and to get the high notes out. But a lot fortunately transfers over!
Wow! Your fingers were flying! Great job!
Thank you! ☺
I love this tune! It sounds mystical on the contrabass flute!
@theflutarian Me too! I always thought it was a good tune. So glad someone suggested I play this one because I didn't think about it, and it was a joy playing it on the contra. Thanks so much for listening!
That sounds great! Keep up the good work.
Thanks so much!!
Nice 🙂
Thank you! ☺

It's very resonant sound! Do you record in your home? The background is nice!👍👏❤
Thank you!! Yep, that is in my music studio at home. This view is the only spot that isn't terribly cluttered 🤣
@@erikaskyeandres I like your music studio!😁
@@jihyeflutelab Thank you 😊
Oh, is it key-click? That's interesting❤
Right! It's basically represents the heartbeat. Key clicks sound great on low flutes, especially contra because of all the tubing! Fun doing extended techniques :)
You're so talented, Erika!🎉😊
Aw so kind, thank you!! ☺
Wow, it looks like hard to play! Good work!❤
Yeah pretty tough, especially the contrabass part. But lots of fun! Thank you!
love it!
Thank you!!

Nice contrabass flute! Which company did you bought?😊
Thank you!! It's a Pearl that I got from Flute Specialists. I had been saving for a while then they had a black Friday deal last fall and so I nabbed it. There should be a link to it in the blog post linked in the video description if you are ever interested in getting one yourself. It is a beast but so much fun to play!!
Good sound! I'm learning Ocarina now. Are you gonna teach ocarina or pan flute?
Thank you! That's great, so cool you are playing ocarina too! So far I have just been playing them for myself, they are really fun! No plans to teach them now, but maybe one day! :)
@@erikaskyeandres Good luck, Erika!!🫡

Aw thanks so much!!
As a Brazilian Flutist I can say: THAT'S SO BEAUTIFUL!! Flute is the best of all
Thanks so much!! Absolutely, flute is the best!! Nice to meet another flutist :)
Oh, is it Tin-whistle? I'm not sure it's same or not
Right! Irish whistle, penny whistle, and tin whistle are actually all the same instrument.

Congratulation, Erika! Is it for children's flute book?
Thank you! Yes, it is a recording that goes with my children's music book, "Flutie's Family Reunion", introducing the different members of the flute family. There is a recording that goes with each flute.
Good luck on your book! ❤
Thank you!

Thanks!
Very nice! Wish you would do one in a slower meter - give it that mournful air that would fit if someone wanted to use it for "Danny Boy", for example.
Love it, nicely played
