Rye Pier - 10 January 2025
Our first dive at Rye for a while... Friday, 10 January 2025. Visibility wasn't fantastic, but there was lots to see, including a very inquisitive large Smooth Ray and several Sea Horses.

Ricketts Point - Teahouse Reef dive. 4 January 2025 - dive 1
มุมมอง 5221 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Kirsty and I set up for an early dive on the Teahouse Reef to beat the high temperatures later in the day. The visibility was fantastic, and Kirsty spotted her first Eagle Ray! We also found 12 Port Jackson Sharks in the various overhangs in the reef. It's strange how each time we dive there we find somewhere that we haven't seen before!

After our first dive for the day, I went back in to see if I could find more of the Port Jacksons and perhaps get another look at the Eagle Ray. I did find more PJs, but there was no sign of the Eagle Ray. The sun was a bit higher, which made the visibility even better than the first dive, and I spent my time marvelling at the amazing range of species that inhabit the reserve.

Last night and this morning was fantastic at Ricketts Point! This is a timelapse of 1800 8 second exposures on my Canon 450D DSLR, at ISO 1600, using a Tokina SD 11-16 F2.8 lens. I started imaging at 10:22pm and ended at 3:29am, when the clouds returned. Well worth the windy conditions!

Thursday 19 December 2024. A great day out on the water, from Werribee South to Point Cook and return, in four Wooden Boat Association boats: "Anjevi" (Scamp), "Blue Violet" (Shimmy), "Phittirrit" (Lapwing 16), and "Snug" (Scamp). The forecast was for relatively light South Easterlies, but fortunately it piped up a bit as the day progressed, making for an easy run along the coast to the sea pla...

A great pre-Christmas dive at Ricketts Point. We were there early on Friday, 20 December 2024, to avoid the heat and to take advantage of the better visibility before the wind picked up in the afternoon. We caught up with Ivan, who came out with us and showed some of his favourite locations for Port Jackson Sharks. Thanks Ivan!

Sailing "Pitthirrit", my B & B Yacht Designs Lapwing 16 on Port Phillip, Saturday 14 December 2024. The Easterly winds made it an easy trip down towards Frankston, and once the wind turned I had a good run back up the bay, to Sandringham and Black Rock.

First dive of the season, in murky conditions at Ricketts Point. Surprisingly few Snapper around, and only a couple of Leatherjackets seen. There was a school of Zebrafish over one part of the reef, and we did see a couple of small Port Jackson Sharks on top of the reef, rather than in the caves where we would normally find them. Lots of vegetation, and very few Sea Urchins. We've seen a dive b...

A late check of the aurora apps on my phone convinced me to head to Ricketts Point even though there was a half moon in the sky. I arrived just before dark, and there were already a few people there. I spent some more time on Sunday watching the paragliders on the clifftops at Sandringham. That brought back memories. You're in my old stomping ground there. I was a member at B.R.Y.C. in the late 80's and early 90's. You sailed straight past the family home at Quiet Corner where we often beached our dingies while we went and raided my parent's kitchen for food. In hindsight, I'm not sure how happy mum and dad were feeding four or five teenagers while they dripped half of Port Phillip Bay throughout the house, but they never said anything too discouraging. It felt like we owned that whole end of the bay and every club on it from the Royal Vic at Williamstown to Beaumaris and beyond back in those days. Wonderful times. Thanks for the memories.
