Good explanation, but why did they separate it into two clocks? They could have made a single clock that is modulo 10 and the the counter would still be programmable via the R inputs. I don't understand the motivation for why they split it into two.
In order to realize all possibilities like Mod-2, Mod-3, Mod-4,...Mod-10 by proper decoding logic connecting to R1 and R2 reset pins.
