Doing that every year, round-trip air-travel and all the associated expenses of travel and having multiple residences - that is such a bad example for anyone who wants to be taken seriously about climate change. Ms. Vermilye is an example of the problems that are deeply dug in to our modern society.

Don't let perfect be the enemy of good. The net effect of this woman is good for the environment. Take any one person and I'll show you what they could do more. Also telling everyone they can't fly anymore will just lead to people saying 'forget it' and thinking that if radical changes in personal behaviour is the only answer then they may as well not make any changes at all.

For more than forty years I have taught history and political economy. It is clear to me that humans have failed to solve the most serious cause of the main problems, by which I mean our treatment of the planet as an infinite source of natural resources that does not require systems maintenance. Groups of us claim sovereign control over some portion of the planet, that claim enforced by militarism. Within the sovereign territory the socio-political arrangement and institutions evolved to secure and protect privilege for a hierarchical elite. And, the mechanism to achieve a redistribution of wealth from producers to themselves as nonproducers is to reclassify the commons as private property, to reclassify the economic rent of land and nature generally as private and not societal income.

All the issues with EV's relate to the deliberate 'friction' the oil industry funds (like people like this guy right?). Charging infrastructure is still the number 1 issue for widescale EV adoption. Sort that out, so for example people in flats can charge at their homes on their household electricity bill, and an EV becomes a serious choice for most people.

The dogs dinner that we must negotiate is compressed into a shorter time scale, than is desirable, but must be digested. The betting the farm on technology advances, which are problematic, nuclear is old technology that might have to be considered for base load. The huge increase in CO2 and projected temperature rise of +2 oC upward. Will there be enough agricultural land to grow the fuel for diesel, and feed the population, as sea levels rise, hmm. Well EU food standards appear far higher than the US, the new ICE vehicle cut off of 2035 l hope is not compromised. Events in the biosphere and seas continue to exceed expectations, may force matters politically. What do l know, in the end.

In terms of energy efficiency, no internal combustion engine in existence can compete with an EV motor. There remains some specific use cases ( aviation for example) that electrification remain impractical but all in all this interview sounds like desperation and denial. Very powerful vested interests are triggered by this energy transition that will use every deciept, persuasion and coercion to continue to poison the global atmosphere, the industrial military complex would be one example.

  • @kalebdaark100

I'm 5 minutes in and I'm a bit puzzled as to what he means by "technological advance". I can tell you from personal experience that the technological advancement in EVs has been pretty rapid, arguably encouraged by central authorities saying what should happen. Hopefully he will clarify later, but that was not a good opener. Edit: I'm having to watch this broken up due to life. I'm now at 36 minutes and he's talking about using nuclear power to make synthetic liquid fuels for vehicles, presumably to be used in a combustion engine as he seems to have a problem with changing the power train on vehicles. No problem with building lots of nuclear power stations, but changing the power train on the cars, that tend not to last as long as power stations, is too much of a problem. WHAT?! I do not know what this guy gets paid but my feeling is it's far too much. Does he not know the difference in energy efficiency between an ICE car and an EV? If not, why not? We would have to build over 3 times as many nuclear power stations to power the cars running on synthetic fuel as we would to power the EVs.

Some good points, but too much made of the potential negatives. If global warming continues to accelerate, acidification of the seas will do far more damage to the flora and fauna of the seas & oceans than the issues raised here.
