    What a dive. With the exception of some beautiful historic buildings that have been preserved and will stand the test of time for years to come,its dreary and dull. The city is better now, but society is poorer. One of rhe biggest acts of criminality was when the government decided to use our splendid Midland Hotel as lodgings for asylum seekers. johnson and Sunak a national disgrace

    Thing is if Derby was left like this people would complain about it looking like an eyesore. Yes character has gone for some areas, it costs money to build. It's about economising what we hsce, retro fitting old buildings with modern eco methods is more expensive than pulling down and starting again with some structures. It is a shame but leaving areas derelict rather than being redeveloped and out into use generating money opening business or homes is better than doing nothing. Some areas of the country looked run down we should be glad they did anything from what I've seen elsewhere.

    It sounds daft but I get a tad emotional seeing this sort of footage of our fantastic city. I grew up on slack Lane in the 90s but my nan lived there years and years before and she showed me all the railway infustructure on slack Lane up towards Morley estate rec and Mackworth. Even in the early 90s there was still bits you could see behind the old Hazelwood factory. Derby was amazing at railways then that pig Dr beeching carved it all up. Lovely footage sorry to yap on.👍

    • @daysken
      @daysken ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes,Slack Lane hosted the GNR Loco Shed sub of Colwick. As you say there are plenty of reminders of our destroyed railways, Bridges seem to have survived best! There is a facebook site that concentrates on teh Friargate Line,well worth a look

      Yes Terry,it is sad and previous to these days before filming we never really thought that the works would crumble and close,so when reality started to kick in our mission was to try and preserve on film and camera as much as we could, regardless of its condition to at least have some,albeit sad,memories of a once great workplace!

    I think that the withdrawal of the Class 151s was a factor in these substitutions, but not the only one. There was also the late delivery of the Class 158s, a batch of 156s intended for Midlands routes were temporarily deployed in place of the Class 155s on the Cardiff - Manchester / Portsmouth trains due to problems with the 155s and a 156 involved in an accident. By the time the Class 155s were converted to single car Class 153s, the 158s were already entering traffic and the 155s had been displaced from the express routes by the 158s. By 1991 the DMU shortage seemed less acute as the Pacers had been fitted with replacement gearboxes and their return and the arrival of the Class 158s released some Class 101, 117 & 150 units for refurbishment.

    Great film of the closed works and the music was alright I thought, despite some of the comments ( music/sound of the time). I was in a lot of these shops as an apprentice, it was a good place to work and there were some great people and characters at the loco works. It's hard to believe that a works that size and important is not there anymore, the roundhouse, offices and part of the maintenance buildings being the exception and only surviving part of the works.

    • @daysken
      @daysken 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and appreciating the incidental music! The Loco Works was like being a part of a massive family to a great many of the employees there, with its good and bad sides! Now its all gone I think we appreciate that more so. When I was transfered to Carriage Works along with many other redundant Loco Works staff the atmosphere was totally different and many of us never really felt apart of it like we did at Siddals Rd works!! I still look at my numerous photos regular that I took and so glad I recorded those moments there.

  • @stephencope7178

    The employees used to call the open day the Derby Loco Flower Show, as I recall. The workers used to grow either dahlias or Chrysanthemums and put them on display. A shame that we've destroyed so much, in the name of progress and now import virtually everything (mainly from China!)

    • @daysken
      @daysken 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the Flower Show was a noted date on the Derby Calendar especially for trainspotters! Usually the last Sat in August, then the week after C & W used to have their show. Good memories of a proud time for Derby

      Tend to agree with you on a technical note, however the video was made by a person who was passionate about the Loco Works and purchased a cam corder in the early 80's to make sure he captured some important record of the destruction of a fine Workshop establishment for future reference. This is a rare video and appreciated by many people who remember these workshops!

Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Wait. Was Derby massively regenerated in the 1990s? I am shocked by how different this city looks to the place that I visited as a kid in the late 1990s. The images in this video look like they are from a postwar society.

      We took these places for granted in the 60's and had many visits to all three mentioned works and also served 30 years at Derby Works during my railway times.These towns were built around railway activity and later on Rolls Royce of course. Along with my work colleague (Steve) towards the last years we were determined to try and record on film and photos as much as possible during our working days at Derby even though decay had set in to an unreversable level!
