J.S. Bach | Cello Suite no.1 BWV 1007 Prelude | Joseph Chester (Guitar)
This is Derek Gripper's arrangement of this miraculous music. It takes a couple of liberties with the original (although in this case, who can say what "original" means - there are four manuscripts but none in Bach's own hand) but I'd say fewer liberties than, for example, Segovia's version. What I like about Derek's arrangement is that it lends itself to being played in this kind of semi-improvised, less metronomic way which I think would have been expected of musicians of the period. I also like that every time you play it you discover something new.
There is much solace in this music and given the horror show of our current world, you have to find your refuge where you can.

Thought to have been composed in Köthen or shortly afterwards in Leipzig, around the time of the Cello Suites and the Violin Sonatas and Partitas, this prelude may have been the opening movement of a Lute Suite which has been lost to time. The "Gnossiennes," are influenced by occultism and esotericism, which spread in France at the end of the 19th century. The word appears to derive from gnosis. Satie was involved in gnostic sects and movements at the time that he began to compose the Gnossiennes. The works are for the most part in free time (lacking time signatures or bar divisions) and highly experimental with form, rhythm and c...

I love this song
Magnifique interprétation et quelle aisance!
Beautiful guitar playing - thank you!
Thank you Anthony!
Yeah , me too !
Nice composition and lovely tone on your guitar. What make is that Gtr. ?
Thanks it's an Antoine Pappalardo S2
Cedar ? Double top ? Also I notice you record using both a small condenser and a large diaphragm mic . ….
@@drkevo1 Cedar and brazilian rosewood! Yeah I'm always experimenting with mic placement.
The composers name is Paddy Daly he came from inisvikallane which is one of the blasket island off the coast of county Kerry in Ireland 🇮🇪
I've seen it attributed to a few different people - I'd be interested to see your source!
@@JosephChester . My sources ha had ha .. ha .. I grew up listening to that song and hundreds more like it ,it’s common knowledge in Ireland .. it’s is the most famous slow air in the west of Ireland . It folklore they believed it to be the music of the fairies 🧚♀️ that Paddy Daly heard while fishing in the sea ..
@@MM-mw6ww Haha! I am also Irish and have known the tune since hearing it in my childhood from Tony MacMahon, but I'm afraid the source of the tune is not common knowledge but has been attributed (without solid evidence) to many people. I was curious to know if you had more solid information. For the moment its origin remains mysterious - which of course only adds to it. Have a great day!
@@JosephChester maybe it’s the music of the fairies
@@MM-mw6ww Now you're talking! :-)
wonderful stuff, taking notes Joe
Superb!
Beautiful!
J'aime bien revoir à quelques années de distance ce petit chef d'oeuvre
J'adore chanson+vidéo
Waterboys ❤❤❤
Superb, gives me shivers!
Delicate, fashinating interpretation with a 'difficult' guitar. Thank you Master, I will never even dream to have this touch of poetry in my fingers but I am enchanted just listening to.
Thank you!
Karl Wallinger was one of the best and greatest musicians/ composers / producers and collaborators in music history. Sadly the great man has died aged 66. He passed away peacefully at his home. My throat is tight and my eyes fill with tears. Karl's music holds a very special place in my heart and soul. RIP mate you were a genius of the music world. Always in our hearts.

Brilliant work! Those 2010 shows were incredible!
Fabulous show and great evening
This is one of the most difficult piece to play in a sens that the smallest mistake will be obvious. One must be extremely regular all the way long. Wonderful performance. Bravo !
Thank you!
Such a beautiful arrangement ❤
Thank you!
Beautifully played! Love the recording as well.
Thank you very much!
Well done! 😊👍
Really different from other versions I've heard because it's quicker, but great in its own way because of it. I especially enjoyed the little touches that set your playing apart.
Grandiose !
Wow your playing and the recording are so fat and sustaining. Powerful sound
Thank you!
Beautiful playing of this piece with wonderful sound and video quality. I really prefer this version over all I heard around here… a real joy !! Thanks for sharing 🙏
Thank you so much!
Great… Congratulations….But please don’t rush. This must be slow and simple…

Wonderful composition it should be more known
