The main emphasis of this channel is to try and illustrate the railway scene in the Algarve. I was motivated to start this channel as there seemed to be relatively very little about railways in the Algarve on TH-cam, especially in English, so I thought I would try and rectify that in my own small way.
This will be my first attempt at both shooting and publishing videos and although I hope the initial episodes will be acceptable I also hope they improve! I might also upload non "Railways in the Algarve" videos but only time (and confidence) will tell!

I have always found it difficult to imagine the status of railway history by just looking at dates so hit on the idea of using diagrams in a chronological order. However be warned, I have already tried this on the railways of East London and was met with undiluted apathy so lets hope there is more interest in this subject!

Thanks. I see you caught a posh train for this journey! Am I right in thinking that Loule has a freight facility for offloading tanks of aviation fuel which are then taken by road to Faro airport? - if so, is it the only functioning freight facility remaining on the entire line?
Yes the facility in Loulé still exists but.very little used during lockdowns.
Thanks - these sets are quite similar to the 0450s, but are clearly three-car. Can you please enlighten me as to what UTD and UDD stand for? - also, roughly when did the 0450s replace the 600s?
If I remember correctly they were replaced round about 2011/12. As for the meaning of UTD and UDD I am as much in the dark as you. I started calling them Class 600 and Class 450 until I was corrected!
Thanks for another good video. Yes, it's good how the old platforms and buildings have been retained at many of these stations on rebuilding (presumably with platforms to EU standards).
A good place to watch trains, planes and the world go by, usually in the sun. With near-unintelligible announcements and no information screens trying to guess which will be the next train to leave for wherever and from which platform can be fun... 'Guerreros', the little restaurant across the Largo do Estacao outside the station, is recommended for a basic but honest and cheap meal with the bonus of photos and paintings of trains from the past.
Amazing! - I've never seen a train use the far platform in the (more recent) years I've known the place. I assumed it was kept in reserve for ??race days (!) and was the result of over-generous EU largesse when the stations were rebuilt. Currently trains only cross here twice a day so two platforms are plenty.
Okay, so maybe not so attractive, but handy for the nearby Lidl (and my step-daughter starts work at the CF electrical company opposite tomorrow, as it happens). Planes to watch here as well! You can still trace - on the ground and on Google Earth - the line of what I assume was a branch ou tto the port, heading westwards (and hence, presumably, the redundant pointwork next to the line).
Thanks. Brings back memories as I know the place quite well (used to stay in the Ibis Hotel across the track) but never realised there used to be a station there. Yes, lots of planes to watch, too - should the rail line to the airport ever materialise (watch out for low-flying pigs as well) it would probably leave the main line somewhere near here.

I remember asking a tourist officer at VRSA about when the Guadiana station was closed down. She told me it was the early 90s. Obviously not 1998 because I visited there in July 1998. It is a surprise that the building still remains there. I wish I have another chance to visit there.

These locomotives from the 60s are a little better in the north of the country, for example on the Douro line, between the city of Porto and Pocinho.

It's just a stop rather than a station, really. We call these apeadeiros in order to differenciate them from the stations.

Hi Geoff, I have refused to get on a train. There was literally not one clear window.
I travelled by local train in November 2018, during a holiday in the Algarve, as I usually do. I was appalled by the rampant graffiti on the outside of the trains. Some windows were so obscured that I could not see out of them. Then, on a journey back to Albufeira from VRSA, our journey was curtailed at Faro, and we were told that a bus would be provided. What is going on? If this continues, people like me will just not bother catching the train.
