PAPA CAN YOU HEAR ME? as sung by Barbra Streisand in Yentl (MICHEL LEGRAND) Piano cover/Gareth Giles
I hope you will enjoy today's upload - the emotionally charged prayerful plea 'PAPA CAN YOU HEAR ME?' from the film YENTL (1983)
All the Friday uploads in JAN 2025 are going to be covers of MICHEL LEGRAND songs - as one of my favourite composers, I cannot think of a better way to begin the year! You can find my other interpretations of Michel Legrand music within this playlist:
th-cam.com/play/PLLcCaxzeIuJuFvJALVQ_aBboAIYbGs67h.html
YENTL is a 1983 American romantic musical drama film directed, co-written, co-produced by, and starring Barbra Streisand. It is based on Isaac Bashevis Singer's short story "Yentl the Yeshiva Boy".Yentl incorporates music to tell the story of an Ashkenazi Jewish woman in Poland in 1904 who decides to disguise herself as a man so that she can receive an education in Talmudic law The film was a pet project and culmination of hard graft on the part of Barbra Streisand, who forfeited many tours and productions over the years as she sought the validation of the film makers and backers. The success of the film and its wide following is testament to her strong beliefs and determination to get the film made. With lyrics by the legendary Hollywood team lyricists Marilyn and Alan Bergman, and a romantic, authentic score by Michel Legrand, it quite rightly won the Oscar for 'best original score' for its writers. Additionally, it won the golden globe for best film, as well as a golden globe for Streisand herself, as Director.
PAPA CAN YOU HEAR ME? is arguably the most famous song from the film. Its emotionally charged lyric is a prayerful plea with a resonance not only in the jewish faith but moreover, to anyone who has lost a Father, or who misses that loving, watchful care. Although it has been criticised for its syrupy qualities, the power of music, lyrics and performance delivery cannot be overstated - indeed, it was nominated for an Oscar for best song. Set in D minor, it begins with the solemn lighting of a candle and a recitative-style intoned prayer to God. The melody is Michel Legrand at his most yearning, with sequential harmonies reminiscent of his earlier film scores. As each melodic fragment piles on the emotion, the richness of the chord sequences underscore the tension and release in this poignant song. The result leaves the listener drained from its heart-tugging message. With such powerful lyrics, it is difficult to convey the gravitas of this pivotal song through a piano cover, but I have opted for a simple delivery of the musical material as written - it needs no further embellishment or improvisation to make its point. Its many covers have included those by Nina Simone, Michael Crawford and Charlotte Church.
It is almost impossible to categorise and summarise the many achievements of the great MICHEL LEGRAND (1932-2019) - arguably the greatest popular French music composer of the 20th century. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire, as well as privately with Nadia Boulanger, graduating with top honours in Piano & composition. He was 22 when his album 'I love Paris' was produced - quickly establishing itself as one of the most popular and best selling instrumental albums of the era. As well as being a jazz piano virtuoso, Michel Legrand was also an orchestral conductor, arranger, Big Band leader and (of course) composer of more than 200 film scores, including 'Les Parapluies de Cherbourg', 'Ice station Zebra', 'The go-between', 'Yentl' and 'Never say never again'. His prolific output extended to TV, music theatre and computer games, and he composed his Piano concerto at the age of 84. Michel Legrand collaborated with the greatest, including: Sarah Vaughan, Miles Davies, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Maurice Chevalier, Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Alison Moyet, Barbra Streisand, Jamie Callum and Natalie Dessay.
I was fortunate to watch Michel Legrand perform live on 6 occasions, including his final London performance in 2018, and always marvelled at his skill, dexterity, crystalline runs, spectacularly beautiful melodies, cheeky invention, and incredible virtuosity. He always spoke candidly of the musical goals and projects still to come...“The more I live, the more I learn. The more I learn, the more I realise, the less I know.” (Michel Legrand)

Another new one on me. A somehow haunting start to my Friday. Very sensitively played. Thank you!
Thanks for the lovely concert Gareth! 🎶 🎹 🙏🏻😀
Thank you for listening and your much appreciated comment 😀 🍿 G 🎹
Another marvelous set Gareth. I remember watching Whose Line is it anyway in my old TV days. Shame about Tony Slattery. Always sad when successful people don't reap the rewards of their success in later years. Enjoyed the rousing Ski theme. Great tune - so catchy. Looking forward to your version of Galloping Gerty! I particularly enjoyed your rendition of Tonight by Lenny Bernstein. Loved the intro and the rhythmic interpretation. I remember discovering Peg of My Heart from sheet music before hearing a recording of it and have always liked it a lot. Memories is a fantastic tune. I think I was working abroad when Marvin Hamlisch died and didn't find out till quite recently! These days I seem to be always googling whether artists are still with us. The internet is so useful! Barbra has recorded everything, usually brilliantly - a bit like Sinatra in that respect. Thanks again for the entertainment. Always a delightful listen. Best.... Martyn :)
😀 thank you Martyn. As well as the quasi Baroque Ski Sunday theme, Sam Fonteyn composed loads of ‘raise a smile’ character pieces for the libraries. There is certainly a driving quality to the Beguine rhythm of Tonight and I never tire of Marvin Hamlisch’s invention and melodic gift. Thanks so much for tuning in and your much appreciated comment 👍 All the best - G 🎹 🍿 ⛷️
Thank you for being with us to share the joy of music 🎹 G
Wonderful rendition Gareth. Nice tempo and gentle rhythms perfect voicings etc. All the right notes in all the right places! Sounded fantastic for sure. My first hearing of this tune was on a cassette I had of Errol Garner. I found the melody very appealing especially with Errol's unique piano style. Just listened to Tony Bennett singing it live before listening to give it some context. I love Norman Gimbels words - he's right not to do pure translations that would be very unrewarding. When you play Legrand I always make a mental note to watch the old Catherine Deneuve Parapluies film again. It was such wonderful music especially the goodbye scene music at the railway station when he's off to Algeria where his orchestrations and the singing were superb from both actors. Great work as always and looking forward to see what your remaining choices are. Best.... Martyn :)
Hi Martyn - thanks v much for that! Interestingly after I had posted the video - a recording of Erroll Garner playing it came up on my TH-cam feed - I had not seen that so it was an amazing revelation to me. I'm not a huge film watcher but Parapluies I could watch over and over - such a unique film and just love all that jazzy dialogue constantly going on....as well as that heartstring wrenching Cherbourg station scene. Thanks so much for your much appreciated comment - all the best 👍🎹😃G
Superior 🎹piano solo of one of my favourites! I'm glad you didn't play a straight transciption of the way Legrand plays it, but did it in your own way. I like your putting it into various musical contexts in line with the history (which I didn't know by the way). Do you remember the fantastic duet of this with Oscar Peterson which I first heard on TV in the 80s? I found an upload of it (I'll send the link if you've not heard it but sound quality is not the best) .🙂🙂
Thank you Steve very much - it’s amazing isn’t it how quite a few songs (a lot of Jobim numbers and these Legrand ones) can be a totally different song/mood feel when a different set of lyrics is applied to them - I came to this song via umbrellas ☔️ first and then was bowled over to then hear it as an upbeat swing. Yes am familiar with that amazing concert with Oscar Peterson, Michel Legrand and Claude Bolling - absolutely mesmerising to watch and how lucky it was preserved on film and now free for us to marvel at on TH-cam 👏 many thanks again - all the best 👍 G 🎹
Nice to find waiting. Thank you!
Thank you David - glad you enjoyed…such a great piece 😀 G
Very much like your performance. 🎶😊
Thank you Moore 🤩 I hope you are having a good weekend (and not too much homework 😂) G 🎹
Oh yes, I like that. Your rendition sort of grows from a bit sad and contemplative through to upbeat and hopeful. Thanks GG.
Yes I think that was the feel I was going for - one of those songs that doesn’t really quite know what it is….apart from a great memorable number ! 🥳 thanks for listening 🎹 G
Wonderful set of tunes Gareth and wonderfully played as always. Suprised to learn Francis Lai wrote the Panarama theme. Haven't watched it in years and don't have a TV even if I wanted to but the tune is unforgettable! I love the Man and a Woman theme although the melody is quite simple the chords give it that sophisticated sound. All the Things You Are is always a good listen. The second most recorded jazz standard after Body and Soul if my sources are to be believed. I can't argue with a bit of Jobim and I'm not familiar with the Vavilov version of Ave Maria but it was quite delightful and will be added to my playlist. Thanks for the entertainment. Always thoroughly enjoyable. Best .... Martyn :)
Thanks Martyn - must admit that when I found out about the Panorama theme some years back I was amazed and even more so because it was from ‘Un home et une femme’ - always find it a bit threatening/suspenseful but guess that is why they chose it all those years ago and it’s still going strong. Like you I don’t have a TV (since 2009) and don’t miss it one iota 📺 💥 💣 🤣 thanks for listening and commenting - much appreciated 👍 G
I hope you enjoyed our selection of music this evening on ADWTDS - have a good week - Gareth 😃🎹
Sad to hear of his passing. He was a true artist. He sometimes was on the BBC Radio programme called At The Piano I seem to remember. A great pianist indeed!
…For many years - he did seem to be everywhere - a lovely talented guy by all accounts. All the best Steve 👍 G
Blind date! Well, that brings back memories! Thank you for informing us about yet another talented musician who works away in the background creating the soundtrack to our lives!
He always seemed such an amicable and modest maestro - and this theme is certainly an earworm 👂🐛 - thanks for listening 😃 G
Very nice tribute Gareth. He certainly worked with some famous (and talented people). I wasn't familiar with him but he sounds a talented chap and its a lovely tribute that was no doubt well deserved. I used to be friends with a girl who was on blind date but can't say I ever watched it but somehow recognise the music very well. Best.... Martyn :)
...First saw him playing for Cleo Laine and was drawn in by his style and smile - then he seemed to pop up everywhere on the TV shows as MD of the band - with the cans and....... the smile!! All round top guy it seems! Thanks for listening - all the best 😀 G
So lovely to hear it is very nice music for the evening thank you so much for your special music my friend 🎉🎉
Thank you Marwan very much - wish you good weekend 😃 🐫 G 🎹
Wow such a beautiful 🎵 melody a pleasure to listen. 😊
Thank you 'Moore' very much - hope you are having a good weekend 😀.....what are you practising/preparing next 🎹 🤔
Beautiful indeed Gareth and no doubt you do it justice as I think you emulate his harmony voicings in much of your playing. Happy to admit ignorance of this song. I do have the Decca 2002 piano solo album but this song is not on it. His very free and improvisational harmonic language is something I admire very much.🎹🙂. I'll look for the 95 album.
You are very kind Steve - someone said that a few years ago about my voicings.....perhaps it's because he is probably the only pianist I have watched close - really close 😂 up and absorbed the shapes by some sort of musical osmosis 🤪 Most of the tracks from that '95 album, including this one are...or were around on TH-cam. ABSOLUTELY... his fluid harmonic shifts and shimmering runs imbued with a romantic flair make for such uniquely characterful playing and styling. Thanks so much for listening and commenting Steve - all the best 👍 G 🎹😃🥶
What a beautiful melody! Just right for a Sunday night?!!!
It is indeed serenely sumptuous Jean....and you never know - it MAY pop up on Jan 26 ADWTDS - thanks so much for listening ☺️🎹🥶
It's lovely Gareth. You found one I don't know and I thought I knew most of his catalogue. In my defence it is vast! The lyrics were great too. You were lucky to see him 6 times, must have been incredible. He had such an amazing sense of harmony and could wander in and out of keys and make it seem obvious that was the thing to do though I could never have thought of it myself. An absolute legend and I love the quote you include in the description showing his humility. Thanks for a wonderful performance and upload. All the best..... Martyn :)
😂 indeed to the vast nature of his catalogue - 200+ film scores - apart from hearing it on the 1995 CD and having traced its writing year to 1975, I know nothing about the context, and have looked many times over the years. It COULD be a song that was destined for a film but didn't quite make the final cut, so exists (albeit relatively obscurely) as a standalone....Yes that fluidity between keys is mind-blowing to behold. Thanks so much for listening and your supportive comment Martyn 😃 🎹 🥶 G
That feels like a beautiful and gentle magical-mystery tour! A captivating start to the day. 🥰
Thank you Alison - it's one of those dreamy pieces that gives a warm fuzzy feeling of contentment - beautiful song 😌 G
A beautiful piece played with heartfelt intensity....Delightful!❤
Thank you very much! Love the songs of Michel Legrand and this one is particularly beautiful - glad you enjoyed and thank you for listening 👍🎹 Gareth
Fantastic set of tunes again Gareth. I recognised Grandstand instantly but couldn't place the programme. Drove me mad that I couldn't remember it without looking it up in your description! Love the Walk in the Black Forest - the catchiest tune ever I think and such a plaintive song from Billy M. He had a tremendous sense of melody as well as an awesome harmonic pallette. Love your funky Brubeck arrangement of the 3.5 Kings. I know Eric Coates from his marvelous compositions the Sleepy Lagoon and his Dam-busting anthem so nice to hear something different. All fantastically played and wonderfully presented (as always). Best ..... Martyn
🤣 I'm not a big follower (or any sort of follower tbh) of sport but wow the sport progs really did have cracking tunes!!!! cricket/snooker/football/tennis etc. I used to have Walk in the Black Forest 45 RPM on the auto repeat record player for hours on end. I have great fun of a Sunday evening and it's so lovely to receive such a supportive comment - many thanks. All the best - G
Thanks for the great concert Gareth! We managed to listen live for a good 2/3 of it which is more than we usually manage! 😂 Cracking tunes and background info as always, keep up the great work! 🎹🎶😎🙏🏻
Hi there DH - it was lovely 'seeing' you on Sunday - a very bouncy session for all - many thanks 🤩🎹
Thanks for the lovely concert Gareth! Happy 2025! 😃🥳 🎹 🎶
🥳 thank you very much and HNY to you both 🇯🇵 ☕️ 🎹
Fantastic Gareth. It's a lovely tune and you played it beautifully. I'm delighted you're having a Michel Legrand month .He's one of my favourite composers too. His output was phenomenal and the quantity never affected the quality. He was a fantastic pianist too. I remember watching him play piano duets with Oscar Peterson (2 pianos) and he more than held his own. Most pianists would have been intimidated by the great Oscar Peterson. Looking forward to find out which numbers you've selected for the rest of the month. Great start to the year. All the best.... Martyn :)
Absolutely to ALL of that Martyn - was gob smacked at Ronnie Scott’s when he was well in his 80s and I was about 4 ft away witnessing the virtuoso 🎹 runs 🤩 coming up this month a few of the lesser knowns but as you say - all are beautiful. Thanks so much for listening and commenting MJ 👍
Most welcome start to the new year with Gareth ..remember buying the sheet music all those years ago . I think you have the right way of interpreting it as a ballad foremost without too much of a beat. He wrote the most wonderful tunes particularly ballads. My favourite female vocalist Maureen McGovern did a marvelous album of songs with lyrics by the Bergmans. "The Music Never Ends" Six of the songs are Legrand compositions I highly recommend it if you have not heard it..didn't leave my CD player for months and introduced me to other composers like Dave Grusin and David Shire. 🙂🙂
Thank you Steve - I remember at Ronnie Scott’s ML wittering on at great length about the way he composed this one and the use of modes and harmonic sequence. He thought the audience wouldn’t be interested but we lapped it up! I will check out that collab you mention 💿 🎶 many thanks for listening and commenting and HNy 🥳 Best - G
One of the best versions I've heard on the TH-cam. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you very much! - I really appreciate your supportive comment - love the melodic flow and harmonic twists of ML. All the very best 👍 Gareth 🎹

A very contemplative start to the new year! Thank you for sharing! 😊

Very nice Gareth. Never heard you with the choir before. Sounds fantastic. 😃👍
The choir were in good form that evening…and the congregation almost kept up 😉 glad you enjoyed and thanks for listening 😀 All the best 👍 G
They were clearly inspired by the organist! :)
Ah, that has to be my absolute favourite Christmas carol! ❤ There I was, thinking it was a David Willcocks descant!
👋 it’s such a poetic carol I think. And tbh until relatively recently I always assumed it was DVW as well - probably because of the context in which it always appears. Glad you enjoyed 😀 🕌 🌲 🌴
Marry Christmas and happy New year so lovely to start Friday with thank you my friend for your lovely music 🎉🎉🎉😊
Thank you very much Marwan 😀 🐫 A very Happy New Year 🕺 🪩
Lovely set GG - moving about as I try to keep warm (Chitty Chitty a good number) while doing my accounts!
👋 Lizzie 😀 fantastic - glad you enjoyed and it helped with 💰 💴 $€£
Having a GG blitz as I finish my 23/24 accounts - yes I know it's Boxing Day! All VERY enjoyable after a bit of a time away due to various commitments. Have a lovely break GG and thanks for carrying on... :)
😀 ☺️ fantastic to hear that Lizzie and glad you enjoyed 🕺 🎶 🎹 Gx
Merry Christmas
And Merry Christmas to you MOORE 🎄 and looking forward to more of your uploads in 2025 😀 Gareth 🎹
Merry Christmas 🎄 🎅🏻 Sorry we missed it live, 2 very excited children 👧🏻 👦🏼 were in the middle of 🎁 opening
👋 and quite right too 🤩 hope you are all having a wonderful Christmas time 🎄 🛷 🎁 🎅 G
Lovely Christmas set Gareth. I remember enjoying Tomorrows World. Can't help thinking that all the great inventions featured on it are already well outdated! I loved the medley with the walking bass lines and your amazing arrangement and genre shifting of God Rest Ye Merry Gents. I'm always delighted at any Michel Legrand tune being included. All fantastically arranged and played. Have a great day. Best Martyn :)
Thank you very much Martyn. Loved Tomorrow’s World especially before they changed the music and format! Lots of fun to be had with God rest ye very oh so very merry gentlemen 🤩 glad you enjoyed and thank you for all your support. Very best Gareth 🎹 👍
I hope you enjoyed our calming selection of carols and secular seasonal songs this evening - A VERY HAPPY AND PEACEFUL TIME TO YOU ALL 🎄 🎅 G 🎹
Very enjoyable Gareth! Nice to have the little tour, though sorry not to hear St Matthew's Surbiton on this occasion 🙂Glad to hear you still playing for their carol service however (excellent Widor as always!) Have a very happy Christmas, and greetings from darkest Surrey 🎄
Thanks Simon / good to ‘see’ you. Ah yes…. Had not quite visited St Matthew’s at the time of the edit 😥 - but stand by your beds for a StM upload coming on Friday 27 December. All the very best and thanks for listening and your supportive comment 😀 🎹 G
I hope you enjoyed our jolly, seasonal selection this evening - do join us LIVE on Christmas Eve @ 1700, on Christmas Day @ 1100 - or on catch-up. A very happy and peaceful time to you all - Gareth 🎄
Splendidly-sequenced seasonal Surrey sleigh song, "Superb", said Santa👏👏👏🦌🛷🎅
Too many potholes in the 3 mile jaunt between Surbiton and Claygate said Rudolph 🦌 😩 😉 thanks for listening and for your alluringly attractive alliterative additions to the comments 👌 🎅
Splendid! Needed to hold on to my hat for that ride! 🛷🌨
😝 🛷 💥 💨 😰 I find the Surrey pot holes are particularly bad moving between Surbiton and Claygate 🤔 😉 many thanks for listening to the festive fun 🤩 🎄
Fantastic Gareth. As you know I love Leroy Anderson's music too. Some great organs - I don't know enough about organs to put them in order but they all sounded amazing to me at least. Great idea to put them all in one video. Have a very Merry Christmas and all the best for 2025. Thanks for all your support through the year. Thanks too for the top quality music and entertainment. Best.... Martyn :)
And thank you for listening 😀 it was super fun to do - not even sure how I would rank them tbh - all have some great qualities but perhaps the best instrument in terms of upkeep, versatility and power is St Andrew’s in Surbiton. And thank YOU for all your support - all the best Martyn 👌 🎄 G 🎹
What a great idea!
Thank you Jean - had the idea back in September when I knew I was going to become visiting more churches than usual in December- a bit bumpy in places 🛷 💥 💨 🦌 🤕 but super fun - thanks so much for listening 🤩 Gx 🤶
Festively awesome - many thanks🎄
🤩 thank you so much David and Rosie ☺️ I had good fun planning it a few months’ back and putting it together….glad you enjoyed 🛷 🎅 🎄 thanks for listening 👍 G 🎹
Such a fun piece, thank you Gareth! 😊👍🏻🎹🎶
What a fun piece! 😄🎹🎶🙏🏻 Thanks Gareth! Parts of the piece reminded me a bit of the Pink Panther theme tune …
It’s a great raunchy power ballad for sure and very vivid memories of Shirley Bassey belting this out…. As only she could! 🗣️ 🎶 🤩 thanks so much for listening and commenting 🎹 G
