Nancy Louise Harmon, beloved gospel music icon, passed away peacefully on December 13, 2024, at the age of 85, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was surrounded by loving care in the comfort of her home in Cleveland, Tennessee.
Born September 25, 1939, in Warrensburg, Missouri, Nancy dedicated her life to glorifying God through music and ministry. She began her journey in 1957, directing the choir at Calvary Temple in Kansas City, Missouri, later relocating to San Jose, California, where she continued to serve under the late Rev. Kenny Foreman, Sr., at Faith Temple (now Cathedral of Faith).
In 1968, Nancy founded Nancy Harmon and the Victory Voices, a gospel music ministry that toured the nation, often directing choirs of up to 300 voices. Known for her booming, powerful voice and soulful gospel style, Nancy's music and ministry inspired thousands around the globe.
In 1984, Nancy and her ministry team relocated to Portland, Oregon, where she founded Love's Place, a ministry dedicated to providing foster homes and support to children in need. While in Portland, Nancy conducted weekly televised services from a renovated dance hall called "The D Street Corral." This ministry became a beacon of hope, sharing the gospel through music and outreach.
In 1988, Nancy and The Love Special Singers relocated to Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas, establishing a central hub for her ministry. Here, she launched her summer youth program, The Mighty Warriors, which brought together young people from across the nation for five weeks of intensive ministry training. After 36 years in Texas, Nancy made her final move to Cleveland, Tennessee.
Nancy wrote and performed many gospel classics, including "The Blood Bought Church," "I've Come Too Far to Look Back," and "Nothing's Too Big for My God." These songs continue to inspire and uplift congregations worldwide. She co-authored her autobiography, Born to Sing, and wrote four additional books, including Products of Pentecost. Nancy was featured on the cover of The Christian Voice Magazine, spotlighted in the Singing News Magazine, and multiple issues of the Church of God publication, The Evangel, highlighting her revival-style music and ministry.
Her influence extended beyond the pulpit and stage. As the host of The Love Special, Trinity Broadcasting Network's longest-running syndicated music program, and later The Jesus Connection (on WATC TV 57) in Atlanta, Georgia, which at the time was the only Christian Music Program reaching Romania, Nancy inspired millions. She also appeared on other Christian television networks, including PTL, Daystar, CBN, and the SonLife Broadcasting Network.
Nancy's ministry spanned the globe, bringing her music to international audiences through gospel crusades in Africa, Australia, Barbados, Canada, Israel, Jamaica, and beyond via television and radio broadcasts. She was also a featured singer on the Gaither Homecoming videos, which brought her voice and message to countless more. Over her six-decade career, Nancy ministered in more than 4,500 churches. She mentored over 1,700 young singers and musicians - some of whom went on to lead their own ministries.
Her life and legacy reflect the words of her mother, Laura Harmon: "A life spent for Jesus is a life well spent," as well as Nancy's own words: "Bound to a cause far greater than myself." Nancy leaves behind an immeasurable impact on the gospel music community and the countless lives transformed by her ministry.
Her survivors also include the over 1,700 young people who traveled with her and whom she personally mentored in her decades-long ministry. Nancy's capacity for love was unparalleled, and she truly loved those who ministered with her-" her kids," as she called them.
