Sian if he’s vomiting and it’s not uncommon for boys to do so it’s because his blood pressure drops drastically. When you go tell them your son needs to be laying down. Also I tell all my younger patients parents to buy a cream called Emla from the chemist. It’s a skin numbing cream, I call it the magic cream. Pop it on both his arms, liberal amount and cover it an hour prior to his blood test. Also water is so important as is breakfast. If they’re not fasting bloods, make sure he eats and drinks plenty. Walking prior to the blood test also helps to bring up veins to the surface. I hope that helps. Great stuffing hun 💜

Sian I have the same issue with my iron I eat what I should but never gets above 50 please have his b12 ferritin and folate tested he may need b12 supplement if his ferritin or folate is low then he might not be producing enough blood which is y it’s not combing up if his b12 is below 200 do not take it fine. If u are under 18 200 is bad

I have terrible veins (so they tell me) and a fear of needles so there are a few things that can be done to help blood tests go more smoothly for me. Firstly, I drink lots of water before going. I start drinking water about an hour before leaving and try to drink about a litre. Also, ask the nurse to fill a latex glove with warm water and place it on the injection area to help with blood flow and then to help with my absolute fear of needles, I tell the nurse not to let me see the needle so they just let me know when to look away when those bad boys come out. I always let them know when I walk in that I have bad veins and a needle phobia so they are prepared because they do not want to have to have several tries with someone with a needle phobia.

I hate going to the 'vampires' for blood tests as well, my anxiety goes through the roof so I do it first thing in the morning to get it out of the way so that I can relax. I also have trouble with them finding veins as well. Best of luck getting them ready for back to school. I go back tomorrow for staff meetings before meeting all the students on Thursday.
