I remember going to a similar event around this time frame with the Houston Oilers and New Orleans Saints. Could you even imagine today’s players doing such a thing? No.

Getting to watch him, Mercer, Maglore, Muhammad, Delk, Walker and all the other boys at Rupp Arena back in the day was a true experience. I swear, back then, in the SEC, Derek and Ron Mercer were very much the Jordan/Pippen tandem. Before tearing his ACL, Derek was freakishly athletic in terms of leaping ability. He could jump out of the gym. The fact that he was able to come back from that injury, which was devastating and still be a contributor and star in the NBA is just a testament to how good he was. UK basketball in the 90s under Pitino was like mecca. It just felt right.

I'm very spiritual. Just one look at a photo of Billy as a rising senior in Street & Smith. I could tell that he was spiritual too. Today, Pastor Billy Thompson and his wife Cynthia, are bringing many to Christ, with Billy as the lead Pastor. I just want to mention, future NBA stars, Wayman Tisdale and Kenny Walker were also sensational basketball players for the class of 1982 (my senior year).

Billy won a couple of chips with the Lakers in one with the Louisville Cardinals.

I still remember that no look pass he received from Magic when he played for the Lakers. 😁
