How to Replace a Tambourine Head
My 12" tambourine had a small tear in the head. Fortunately, I was able to find a replacement head at Rhythm Traders in Portland, OR.
In this video I show my process of mounting a new goatskin head on a tambourine.
Materials:
Cheap Tambourine
14" circle of goatskin
Bucket of water
Gorilla Glue
Qty 2 MasterPro 5" - 7" hose clamps
(I got lucky 'cos they were returned to the auto parts store and available for cheap)
Sandpaper
Sponge
Utility Knife
Screwdriver
Paper towels and rags
Optional--Putty knife, rubber gloves, masking tape

DRUMMING FOR GUFFMAN: 5 Tricky Grooves from Spring Awakening I've been to see Spring Awakening a few times and I have seen lots of pit cam videos on TH-cam and elsewhere. I also played a short run of this show in a small theater a few years ago. One thing I noticed is nearly all of the drummers in youth and community theater abandon the ink in a few key parts of the show. There are a handful of...

How to play rock tambourine with accents at a fast tempo
มุมมอง 5K5 ปีที่แล้ว
A friend online wrote, "I have a pops concert coming up (with an orchestra) and I noticed that the score includes a tambourine part that requires 16th notes, with accents, at quarter note = 148 beats per minute. How can I play THAT?! It's so fast!" This video demonstrates a trick that will help you play really fast 16th notes with accents without a lot of fatigue.

Most drummers and percussionists are familiar with the "Josie and the Pussycats" style of playing tambourine. In this video, I demonstrate an alternate technique that will save your arm and get a louder, throatier, "Motown" tone. DETAILS: Tambourine can be exhausting. Have you ever wondered how rock and roll, funk and soul percussionists were able to play tambourine all night long in the era be...

    For God sake, when are you a man or a mouse? Do you wanna work on a building site mate after work? I only one hours of Dianne pan bricks and carpentry stuff about in bloody great big timbers to put on roofs and you think of swing on a tambourine he’s gonna do your arm in for Christ sake what are yourushed, I can’t believe I’ve never heard anything like this before even a little kid could do that and not moan about it Ponce

      Ha! This video comes from my attempt to hack my way through this book at Second Story Rep. I gather from social media that you're playing this show soon at a much bigger room here in Seattle. I'm flattered that a pro might appreciate my hobbyist's attempt to decipher the unusual--but cool--notation. I'll try to catch your performance. Break a leg.

      Yeah, I’m getting ready to play this at The 5th! We’re in rehearsals now so I’m deep into scouring the internet for pit videos and any tips/tricks I can glean 😉 Let me know if you make it to a show! I’d love to meet and show you my setup (if we’re allowed to have guests backstage).

    Yeah! Motown would not be Motown without the tambourine sound. Thanks for explaining that technique.👏👏

    • @DrummieK
      @DrummieK ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. That tambourine sound is such an integral part of so many hit records that I thought it was worth learning the technique.

    Hi, Thx for sharing! By playing skinhead music and sustaining the Hi-Hat like on that one at 24:30... th-cam.com/video/15O6h8Yw2sw/w-d-xo.html ... or there, th-cam.com/video/shM4ZBlcrWE/w-d-xo.html I think the only way playing tambourine with enough précision, percussivity and with no résonance is the left-right way with real-time amplitude correction. Am I right? Is there an other and easyest way to play?

      Good point. Most of the interpretations I have heard, including several TH-cam videos by others much more expert at rudimental drumming than me, are not swung. But recently I have heard Steve Smith's interpretations with swung 16th notes and am convinced that they work better that way. Back to the woodshed...

    That's a pandiero, not a tambourine.

    • @DrummieK
      @DrummieK 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a Cosmic Percussion tunable tambourine. I used it because it is the closest thing I own to the old Leedy two row tambourine that Jack Ashford reportedly used on the Motown recordings. I also wanted to use a heavy tambourine just to show that this technique works well even if you have a heavy instrument. I could see how you might think it's a pandiero. My pandiero is also tunable, but like most pandieros, the platinelas (jingles) are thicker, heavier, not crimped, and there are only 5 sets of platinelas for a dry sound. The tambourine in this video has dual rows of 10 sets of crimped jingles. www.musiciansfriend.com/drums-percussion/cp-cp391-tunable-tambourine/400131000000000?cntry=us&source=3WWRWXGP&gclid=CjwKCAjw0_T4BRBlEiwAwoEiAe2z8NAbgQb6X6dVHfeEhRq_7dJZIralPIe79Ip_fInMWtavMkl4dxoC134QAvD_BwE

      Thanks, John. I'm just somebody's dad playing snare drum in my basement for my cell phone camera, but I want to tell you that I got tons of enjoyment and inspiration from working on this piece. I was challenged to explore a few new brush techniques. I was inspired to read "The Violence of Organized Forgetting." (Easter egg: "The Dynamic Snare" and "The Violence of Organized Forgetting" are on the mantle in the shadowy background in this video.) I learned a bit about video editing in Blender. And I discovered a composer from New Zealand who has a large body of breathtaking compositions. (Please forgive my prior ignorance. I blame it on the whole hobbyist/basement thing, but I am now a big fan!) There is certainly much room for improvement, but I was sincere in my effort to give "Mentacide" decent performance. It's a relief to hear that you approve.

      It's a really satisfying show to play. There are some cool grooves--really inventive writing for drumset and percussion. The tragedy is that most drummers in community theaters and schools just ditch the written drum parts and instead play some generic groove of their own devising. In case it isn't obvious, what I am playing in this video is essentially the written part from "Whispering" along with my attempt to cover/simulate the bass drum and tambourine parts from the recorded track that accompanies that tune. You can hear another attempt at the same groove here: th-cam.com/video/RN-KaYicjZo/w-d-xo.html
