Making a «pirate shirt» for my national costume
Hi all!
This week, I have been sewing a new shirt for my Norwegian national costume (bunad), and I thought I’d show you how it tuned out.
I know that this is a bit out of the normal content for my channel, but I’ll get back to the regular programming next week. 😊
I have been attending my niece’s confirmation today, and when I got back, I figured I could film in my bunad to let you have a look at the final product.
I made the shirt in a white lightweight linen. I used an existing shirt, an old book and @bernadettebanner ‘s video on making a pirate shirt as visual aids to sew it up. There is no pattern, so I had to figure it out without instructions.
I hope you’ll leave me a comment on what you think about this, and I’ll be back soon with normal content.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Amazing to see your costume! That embroidery is absolutely incredible!! Well done on making a new blouse, that does not look easy!!! That’s so cool you get to wear them quite often. We have nothing like that here!
@@TheFrenchSeams_vlog Thank you, Rachael! ❤️
Thank you, Karen Marie, for sharing your beautiful national costume. My husband's mother has hers on a mannequin at the front entrance of their house and no-one has ever really explained the pieces to me. I guess I didn't ask, not realising the significance!! She also has her mother's (bestemor's) costume and lots of ornaments, needlework and crockery on display around the house, which is all especially treasured now as besty (as I nicknamed her) passed away 3 weeks ago at 98. As an Australian, whose traditions are essentially non-traditions by comparison, it is wonderful to see so much love of country and heritage kept alive in my husband's family living here in the US. This video has given me more insight into their world. x
@@faithmathingsdal79 Thank you, Faith, for such a lovely comment and for sharing a piece of your husband’s family history with me, too. I love to hear stories like that. I am sorry for your recent loss of besty (or besta, as she probably would have been called here), and I hope someone can wear her costume. ❤️
Wow! What a stunning dress you made for your daughter!!!
Hi Karen Marie. Wow! Your dress is stunning! How long did it take your dear mother to do all the beautiful embroidery?! And your shirt is amazing. I'm so impressed you were able to make it without a pattern. The nice thing about the tricky 90 degree part is that it's hidden by your dress 😉 Thank you so much for sharing. I'm off to watch the other video you mentioned. Hope you have a wonderful week!
@@aleciacope3503 Thank you so much, Alecia! My mum was much more skilled than I, but I guess it took her about 6 -9 months to make it. She had very little time, but she was sewing every free minute. I truly treasure my bunad as I know it was made with love.
that is one of the most beautiful outfits....i would treasure it as well...your mother did a wonderful job❤...tfs:)
Great shirt. Your outfit is stunning
I love your Bunad! It's wonderful dat you wear yours on special occasions. In most countries, the traditional costumes are disappearing but not in Norway it seems. It would be lovely to know more about the Bunad and when you wear them and what your husband wears.
Oh, thank you! ❤️ I think the sense of belonging it gives me, as well as the love of tradition, is the reason I adore mine so much. The bunad is considered a gala attire, so we use them for all the big events, like weddings, christenings, confirmations etc as well as for 17 May which is Constitution Day. My husband wears his bunad, too. My mum made that for him for our wedding. He looks so handsone in ut that it still make me weak at the knees when he wears it 😂
@@madebykarenmarie that's so lovely! I can imagine the men must be very handsome. I hope you'll share it someday. And yes, the sense of belonging, I can feel that in the video, a sense of pride for your traditions. It's so lovely. I am a bit envious. Except the colour orange, there's not much I have to show as a Dutch person 🤷
Great work on your lovely shirt. Your national costume is just beautiful. Thanks very much for explaining and showing it to us. Cheers Mary
@@MaryTipping Thanks, Mary! ❤️
Interesting to see your bunad and shirt. I'm in the prosess of sewing Vest-agder bunad for my daughter's konfirmasjon next spring. Looots of hand sewing as you know 😅. Takk for at du deler ❤
Pirates are cool Karen Marie! I love your national costume and thank you so much for taking the time to let us share a little of your journey in making the new shirt. It's like a puzzle isn't it, when you don't have a specific pattern and instructions? But I think the outcome was very worth the effort! The embroidery is stunning as well and I agree a bag like that would be an awesome addition to modern clothing. Well, at least we still have pockets! Your pride in your heritage, your love for your mum, the special memories this outfit has for you and your pleasure in wearing it were a lovely moment in my day. Take care and see you next vlog. PS Off to check out some pirate shirt patterns!
@@JulieH1958 Thank you, Julie! ❤️Yes, it really is a bit of a puzzle for someone who is used to having a pattern, but it really is comfortable to wear, so I am considering making one for everyday wear, too. Pirate shirts for all! 😂
Hello from Belgium, thank you for sharing your beautiful costume with us. The embroidery is beautiful. I think your shirt is very successful and also very interesting to see the construction. Because of your youtube video I am preparing to make a pair of jeans (I already have toile fabric) I will definitely look at pirate shirt patterns. Thank you for all the effort to share your creative challenges with us. Your national costume is really exceptionally beautiful.❤
What a lovely comment! Thank you so much. <3 I am so glad that you feel inspired to make jeans. I always get such a sense of accomplishment when I finish a pair of well-fitting jeans, and I hope you do too. Pirate shirts also work with jeans! ;-)
Karen Marie, the t-shirt you were wearing in your video was beautiful. The print in the fabric was so soft, cheery, and summery! Bravo! for attempting trousers for your husband! Can't wait to see what you turn all your new fabrics into - the ones you showed and the ones on their way. X
@@dianewilliams7931 Thank you, Diane! ❤️ I’ll keep you posted. :)
Love, love, love! The pink and red dress is lovely on you. The block prints are gorgeous. The purple with orange flowers says it wants to be a skirt. The sage green with the pretty pink flowers could definitely be a slip dress (very sexy for your vacay). Lastly, the navy and white needs to be a blouse like the Fleur blouse from Fabric Godmother.
@@HappyBrainCrafts ooh, what lovely ideas! I am getting out my notebook to make sure these suggestions go on to my list. Thank you!

Hi there :) Karen Marie, love the look of these plans! If you aren’t comfortable with the word national costume, maybe you can go for norwegian traditional dress? I haven’t really made plans yet but you have inspired me to get on and make some! Xx
@@shambolicsewist3836 That is a good alternative term! I know that the dictionary term is national costume, but I have never been comfortable with it. @@amierikke6225 Hi Amie! I have a Norwegian national costume (bunad). My particular one is from Gudbrandsdalen, a long valley in the East of Norway. It is where some of my family is from. Wow! 100 F is way too hot. It never gets that hot where I live :)
@@madebykarenmarie thank you! My husband is of Norwegian descent, and his family makes lefse every Christmas. I’m a mix of Swedish, danish and German. I grew up eating ablesivers and I have my mom’s cast iron ablesciver pan. We are in the middle of the US, Nebraska, and our farmer’s crops in the fields are maturing. They say this makes it more humid right now, all those corn plants “breathing “ and somehow increasing our humidity. The hot temps are just our norm at end of summer. Your video was very interesting. I enjoy seeing where other people live and what they're doing. Now that my husband and I are retired, we've been doing quite a bit of traveling. I've recently started thinking about something I could take along on car and plane trips. Not too big, not too much equipment required, etc. and I've started thinking EPP might just be the thing to do. It looks easily transportable and doesn't take up a lot of room while you're working on it. And my scrap stash is growing! I'll be giving EPP some more serious consideration.

When you spoke about your original thoughts and feelings about the Lotta dress I thought. “I’m thank goodness I’m not alone in my thinking!” But I do really like how it’s turned out for you. I don’t think you were being dismissive of the pattern or the model wearing it , but the way it was photographed didn’t immediately resonate with you. I liked how you paired it with your jacket. I can’t do double denim as it feels overwhelming on me. Separately no problems, but all blue denim? Too much for me. Thanks for the update on your jeans. How are you enjoying your new cutting table? @@JulieH1958 Thanks, Julie! You put it better than I could. I realise that it is difficult to make pattern pictures that appeal to everyone, but I think it is so important to get a good view of the features of the dress. If it hadn’t been for the lovely versions that Ruan and Rachael made, I would never have tried this dress. I really like this dress, and I will make more soon. I loooooove my new cutting table. Every time I open the door to that room now, I smile from ear to ear. So glad to hear that your hand is healing well. Happy sewing! ❤️
