I removed mated queen from hive and placed her in a queen less cutout. Then I removed open brood frames and replaced with empty drawn frame and frame with caped brood and installed a virgin queen to get mated. The hope is that the hive will feel hopelessly queen less and except the virgin queen. Follow along as we see if it works.

    I find that having a double boiler( one pan filled with water on the bottom and another atop of it) keeps the integrity of the wax. On the top pan a cloth or fine netting holds the wax tied up in.once heated from the bottom it Melts and the debri excess stays mostly contained in the cloth which is then discarded. The top pan now has pretty clean wax.. which you can pour into what you wish to contain it in , any water or moisture from bee parts or debri will separate.

    If you can figure out a way to push the slum down and let the wax float to the top, you will keep from throwing out wax out with the slum. Even the way you do it is worthwhile.

      @almostagardener4549 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@justus5588 it’s hard to say how much it cost me a lot of the materials I used I already had but I went online and priced them and even if you don’t have any of the materials and depending on where and what you purchase them you should be able to build it for under $200.00. Time to build would depend on your skill set and tools you use ( power tools versus hand tools) but I think it only took me a few hours and that included planning. I would say someone who has limited tools and experience should be able to build it in a day. As far as if it worth it I believe it is worth it. If you price a commercial building extractor that you can do layens frames in your looking at about $800.00 to $1,000.00 not including shipping depending on where you purchase it. You can hind them at horizontal hive, miller bee supply and hillco bee supply. I’m getting ready to post a video of this year’s honey extraction using my DIY extractor. The smoker makes a belated appearance at the tag end of the video--it could have helped with the stinging, no? I like how you move the frames slowly and carefully to avoid hurting bees. And sometimes you keep mostly upright the withdrawn frame you are inspecting which respects the orientation of the wax cups which the bees construct to be re tilted toward the heavens to keep the honey/nectar from running out, right? Your layens box must be level because your comb is straight, but it looks not-level from the pov of the camera... I love your layens hive, you have a happy healthy colony there, and I wish you buckets of honey. You are certainly doing something right !! I was hoping to see that amazing swirl pattern on a frame but not this time I guess. Great job! Thanks for the tour of your beautiful hive.

    • @almostagardener4549

      I find that the smoker works best to move bees it can calm them at times. I find moving slowly and not smashing bees is as good as smoking but there are times when I have to move at a faster pace and it comes in handy to have the smoker to move the bees to insure that I don’t smash them. Keeping the frames upright is important to keep the nectar from coming out especially when there is a dearth to prevent robbing. It is very important to have the hive level side to side to insure the bees draw comb straight especially if you don’t use foundations but it can tilt to the front a little but it still can be a challenge to keep them drawing with in the frame and not cross combing. I should have leveled up the camera. Thanks so much for your comments I hope you enjoy my video. I hope if you are keeping bees they are doing well and you also get buckets of honey thanks for watching.

    Looks great to me! Any changes suggested after a year's use, e.g. adding top & bottom bearings, etc. ? Thx!

      This was the only time I had a chance to use the extractor I’m hoping to use it this year to extract Layens and Langstroth frames and will post an update. I have not made any changes to date but think it would help to add bearings to the top and bottom.

    Like seeing your videos and I know it takes time to edit and post. Would be nice if videos posted where closer to actual date timeline so others can see if their hives are running close the same or not and evaluate differences.

    I love your layens hive boxes, and hope the bees are doing well for you. Don't like to see frames being flipped so moved on. Parting thought: maybe some swiffer sheets down in the bottom: rough them up, they trap hive beetles' legs but not bees. Good luck with the bees.

    Congratulations, everything looks good. Thank you for sharing this video. I recently performed my first inspection of the Layens Hive, the bee colony survived the winter without any problems. th-cam.com/video/9KqsKjLaDak/w-d-xo.html

      Great to hear your bees made through the winter I did loose three colonies last winter but that is all part of beekeeping. Where are you located? Thanks for the comment and until we see you out at the bee yard happy beekeeping and thanks for watching.

      I had one with me but for a swarm this size it was overkill so I decided to use it the whole process took just over an hour that included hanging the swarm trap

    Healthy Hive, congratulations! They seem docile, you didn't seem to need much smoke. Do you worry that when you don't keep a frame upright as you inspect, that nectar spills out, even honey can start leaking out? Re Hive Beetles, do you believe in putting a swiffer sheet or two loose in the bottom--the beetles' legs get trapped in it the sheet gradually gets balled up, but the bees' legs don't get trapped.... or so I understand...apparently, roughing up the sheet a bit enhances its trapping ability.... ? Yes, I enjoyed the video, thanks, great job.

      Nectar sometimes drips out of the comb and will fall out if you shake or bounce the frame but the bees clean it up and put it back in the comb or use it. I don’t put anything in the hive for the hive beetles but I do kill them by smashing them when I can a strong hive will keep them in check. I’m glad you enjoyed the video thanks for watching.
